An isolated peptide or polypeptide of no more than about 50 amino acid residues which, when contacted with cells in which a PDGF-R is activated in an autocrine manner, inhibits the growth of said cells, wherein said peptide or polypeptide comprises one or more amino acid sequences selected from the group consisting of KKKK (SEQ ID NO:

         2), KLMSY (SEQ ID NO;
