Abstract

A process to structure and summarize the key information required by automated decision-making systems for insurance underwriting is described. The automated underwriting system may be based on rules corresponding to underwriting components, wherein based on the degree of satisfaction of each rule, a component may be assigned to a category, and based on the category for each component, the insurance application may be assigned an underwriting category, or the automated underwriting system may be based on an evaluation of the similarity of a given application to previous application requests, to decide an underwriting category. Most of the key information required for automated insurance underwriting is structured and standardized, except for the Attending Physician Statement (APS), which is almost as unique as each individual physician. The process to structure and summarize the APS information captures the relevant variables that characterize a given medical impairment, allowing an automated reasoning system to determine the degree of severity of such impairment and to estimate the underlying insurance risk.

Claims

1. A process for summarizing and standardizing attending physician statements for use in an insurance application underwriting system comprising the steps of:

accessing a general form for a patient;

verifying that the attending physician statement to be summarized and standardized corresponds to the patient associated with the general form;

entering information into a plurality of data fields within the general form based on information contained within the attending physician statement, where the plurality of data fields comprise at least one required field;

presenting the completed general form for validation, where validation comprises ensuring that the information has been entered into the at least one required data field and that it satisfies at least one of;

a) being within a specified numerical range; and

b) having a membership within a restricted class;

selecting at least one condition specific form;

entering information into a plurality of condition specific data fields within the at least one condition specific form based on information contained within the attending physician statement, where the plurality of condition specific data fields comprise at least one required data field; and

presenting the completed at least one condition specific form for validation.

2. The process according to claim 1, where the plurality of data field further comprise at least one optional data field.

3. The process according to claim 2, where the plurality of condition specific data fields further comprises at least one optional data field.

4. The process according to claim 1, where the plurality of condition specific data fields further comprises at least one optional data field.

5. The process according to claim 1, further comprising the step of storing the validated general form and the general at least one condition specific form in a database.

6. The process according to claim 1, wherein the insurance application underwriting system is automated.

7. The process according to claim 1, wherein the steps of entering information further comprise selecting the information to enter from a presentation of a plurality of entry options.

8. The process according to claim 7, where the presentation of the plurality of entry options comprises a pull-down menu.

9. The process according to claim 1, where the at least one condition specific form comprises a plurality of condition specific forms.

10. The process according to claim 1, where the at least one condition specific form corresponds to a medical condition of the patient.

11. The process according to claim 2, where the general form further includes at least one conditionally mandatory field associated with one of the at least one optional field and the at least one required field, where information is entered into a conditionally mandatory field based on the information entered into the one of the at least one optional field and the at least one required field.

12. The process according to claim 4, where the at least one condition specific form further includes at least one conditionally mandatory field associated with one of the at least one optional field and the at least one required field, where information is entered into a conditionally mandatory field based on the information entered into the one of the at least one optional field and the at least one required field.

13. A process for summarizing and standardizing an information submission for use in an insurance application underwriting system comprising the steps of:

accessing a general form for an applicant;

verifying that the information submission to be summarized and standardized corresponds to the applicant associated with the general form;

entering information into a plurality of data fields within the general form based on information contained within the information submission, where the plurality of data fields comprise at least one required field;

presenting the completed general form for validation, where validation comprises ensuring that the information has been entered into the at least one required data field and may include data validation such as verifying that a number is within a specific range or ranges or that a text entry is within a predefined membership list, such as yes or no;

selecting at least one supplemental form;

entering information into a plurality of supplemental data fields within the at least one supplemental form based on information contained within the information submission, where the plurality of supplemental data fields comprises at least one required data field; and

presenting the completed at least one condition specific form for validation.

14. The process according to claim 13, where the plurality of data field further comprise at least one optional data field.

15. The process according to claim 14, where the plurality of supplemental data fields further comprises at least one optional data field.

16. The process according to claim 13, where the plurality of supplemental data fields further comprises at least one optional data field.

17. The process according to claim 13, further comprising the step of storing the validated general form and the general at least one condition specific form in a database.

18. The process according to claim 13, wherein the steps of entering information further comprise selecting the information to enter from a presentation of a plurality of entry options.

19. The process according to claim 18, where the presentation of the plurality of entry options comprises a pull-down menu.

20. The process according to claim 14, where the at least one condition specific form comprises a plurality of condition specific forms.

21. The process according to claim 16, where the general form further includes at least one conditionally mandatory field associated with one of the at least one optional field and the at least one required field, where information is entered into a conditionally mandatory field based on the information entered into the one of the at least one optional field and the at least one required field.

The process according to claim 16, where the at least one condition specific form further includes at least one conditionally mandatory field associated with one of the at least one optional field and the at least one required field, where information is entered into a conditionally mandatory field based on the information entered into the one of the at least one optional field and the at least one required field.

23. A process for summarizing and standardizing attending physician statements for use in an insurance application underwriting system comprising the steps of:

accessing a general form for a patient;

verifying that the attending physician statement to be summarized and standardized corresponds to the patient associated with the general form;

entering information into a plurality of data fields within the general form based on information contained within the attending physician statement, where the plurality of data fields comprise at least one required field; and

presenting the completed general form for validation, where validation comprises ensuring that the information has been entered into the at least one required data field.

24. The process according to claim 23, where the plurality of data field further comprise at least one optional data field.

25. The process according to claim 23, further comprising the step of storing the validated general form.

26. The process according to claim 23, wherein the insurance application writing system is automated.

27. The process according to claim 23, wherein the steps of entering information further comprise selecting the information to enter from a presentation of a plurality of entry options.

28. The process according to claim 23, where the presentation of the plurality of entry options comprises a pull-down menu.

29. The process according to claim 23, where the general form further includes at least one conditionally mandatory field associated with one of the at least one required data field, where information is entered into a conditionally mandatory field based on the information entered into the one of the at least one required data field.

30. The process according to claim 23, further comprising the steps of:

selecting at least one of a plurality of condition specific forms, where each of the plurality of condition specific forms corresponds to a different medical condition of the patient;

entering information into a plurality of data fields within the at least one condition specific form based on information contained within the attending physician statement, where the plurality of condition specific data fields comprise at least one required data field; and

presenting the completed at least one condition specific form for validation.

31. The process according to claim 30, where the plurality of condition specific data fields further comprises at least one optional data field.

32. The process according to claim 31, where the plurality of data fields further comprises at least one optional data field.

33. The process according to claim 30, further comprising the step of storing the validated general form.

The process according to claim 31, where the general form further includes at least one conditionally mandatory field associated with one of the at least one optional field and the at least one required field, where information is entered into a conditionally mandatory field based on the information entered into the one of the at least one optional field and the at least one required field.

The process according to claim 31, where the condition specific form further includes at least one conditionally mandatory field associated with one of the at least one optional field and the at least one required field, where information is entered into a conditionally mandatory field based on the information entered into the one of the at least one optional field and the at least one required field.

39. A medium storing code for causing a processor to summarize and standardize attending physician statements for use in an insurance application underwriting system, the medium comprising:

code for accessing a general form for a patient;

code for verifying that the attending physician statement to be summarized and standardized corresponds to the patient associated with the general form;

code for entering information into a plurality of data fields within the general form based on information contained within the attending physician statement, where the plurality of data fields comprise at least one required field;

code for presenting the completed general form for validation, where validation comprises ensuring that the information has been entered into the at least one required data field and may include data validation such as verifying that a number is within a specific range or ranges or that a text entry is within a predefined membership list, such as yes or no;

code for selecting at least one condition specific form;

code for entering information into a plurality of data fields within the at least one condition specific form based on information contained within the attending physician statement, where the plurality of data fields comprise at least one required data field; and

code for presenting the completed at least one condition specific form for validation.

40. The medium according to claim 39, where the plurality of data field further comprise at least one optional data field.

51. A medium storing code for causing a processor to summarize and standardize an information submission for use in an insurance underwriting system, the medium comprising:

code for accessing a general form for an applicant;

code for verifying that the information submission to be summarized and standardized corresponds to the applicant associated with the general form;

code for entering information into a plurality of data fields within the general form based on information contained within the information submission, where the plurality of data fields comprise at least one required field;

code for presenting the completed general form for validation, where validation comprises ensuring that the information has been entered into the at least one required data field and may include data validation such as verifying that a number is within a specific range or ranges or that a text entry is within a predefined membership list, such as yes or no;

code for selecting at least one supplemental form;

code for entering information into a plurality of supplemental data fields within the at least one supplemental form based on information contained within the information submission, where the plurality of supplemental data fields comprises at least one required data field; and

code for presenting the completed at least one condition specific form for validation.

52. The medium according to claim 51, where the plurality of data field further comprise at least one optional data field.

code for selecting at least one of a plurality of condition specific forms, where each of the plurality of condition specific forms corresponds to a different medical condition of the patient;

code for entering information into a plurality of condition specific data fields within the at least one condition specific form based on information contained within the attending physician statement, where the plurality of condition specific data fields comprise at least one required data field; and

code for presenting the completed at least one condition specific form for validation.
