1. A method for automatically optimizing parameter selection in a communication system having one or more channels for transmitting and receiving signals comprising the steps of:
- a. receiving a signal from a channel;
b. characterizing impairments in the channel while gathering statistics using the received signal;
c. analyzing the impairments to obtain recommendations for parameter modifications for improved performance; and
d. modifying the parameters based on the recommendations.
