Abstract

A system and method for simultaneously receiving first and second ensembles. The first ensemble includes a first signal from a first satellite, a first signal from a second satellite and a first signal from a terrestrial repeater. Likewise, the said second ensemble includes a second signal from the first satellite, a second signal from the second satellite and a second signal from the terrestrial repeater. The inventive receiver further includes a mechanism for selectively outputting signals transmitted within the first and second ensembles. In the illustrative embodiment, the first signal from the second satellite is identical to the first signal from the first satellite. Similarly, the first signal from the terrestrial repeater is identical to the first signal from the first satellite. In addition, a novel frequency plan is employed by which the carrier signal associated with the second satellite is disposed between the carrier signal associated with the first satellites and the carrier signal associated with the terrestrial repeater.

Claims

1. A receiver comprising:

first means for simultaneously receiving first and second ensembles, said first ensemble including a first signal from a first source, a first signal from a second source and a first signal from a third source and said second ensemble including a second signal from said first source, a second signal from said second source and a second signal from said third source and

second means for selectively outputting signals transmitted within said first and said second ensembles.

2. The invention of claim 1 wherein said first signal from said second source is identical to the first signal from the first source.

3. The invention of claim 2 wherein said first signal from said third source is identical to the first signal from the first source.

4. The invention of claim 1 wherein said first signal from said third source is identical to the first signal from the first source.

5. The invention of claim 1 wherein said second signal from said second source is identical to the second signal from the first source.

6. The invention of claim 5 wherein said second signal from said third source is identical to the second signal from the first source.

7. The invention of claim 1 wherein said second signal from said third source is identical to the second signal from the first source.

8. The invention of claim 1 wherein said signals from said first, second and third sources have first, second and third carrier signals respectively.

9. The invention of claim 8 wherein said second carrier signal is between said first and said third carrier signals.

10. The invention of claim 1 wherein said first source and said second source are satellite based transmitters and said third source is a terrestrial repeater.

11. The invention of claim 1 wherein said signals received from said first and second sources are quadrature phase shift keyed signals.

12. The invention of claim 1 wherein said signals received from said third source are multiple carrier modulation signals.

13. A system comprising:

first means for simultaneously receiving first and second ensembles, said first ensemble including a first signal from a first satellite, a first signal from a second satellite and a third signal from a terrestrial repeater and said second ensemble including a second signal from said first satellite, a second signal from said second satellite and a second signal from said terrestrial repeater, said first signal from said second satellite being identical to the first signal from the first satellite and said first signal from said terrestrial repeater being identical to the first signal from the first satellite and

second means for selectively outputting signals transmitted within said first and said second ensembles.

14. The invention of claim 13 wherein said second signal from said second satellite is identical to the second signal from the first satellite.

15. The invention of claim 14 wherein said second signal from said terrestrial repeater is identical to the second signal from the first satellite.

16. The invention of claim 13 wherein said second signal from said terrestrial repeater is identical to the second signal from the first satellite.

17. The invention of claim 13 wherein said signals from said first and second satellites and said terrestrial repeater have first, second and third carrier signals respectively.

18. The invention of claim 17 wherein said second carrier signal is between said first and said third carrier signals.

19. The invention of claim 13 wherein said signals received from said first and second sources are quadrature phase shift keyed signals.

20. The invention of claim 13 wherein said signals received from said third source are multiple carrier modulation signals.

21. A method for receiving direct digital broadcast signals including the steps of:

simultaneously receiving first and second ensembles, said first ensemble including a first signal from a first source, a first signal from a second source and a third signal from a third source and said second ensemble including a second signal from said first source, a second signal from said second source and a second signal from said third source and

selectively outputting signals transmitted within said first and said second ensembles.
