1. A very low emission hybrid electric vehicle drive system comprising:

  • an electric motor;

    at least one nickel-metal hydride battery module for powering said electric motor; and

    a fuel cell for powering said electric motor and recharging said at least one nickel-metal hydride battery module;

    a source of power for recharging said nickel metal hydride battery module and providing energy to said fuel cell allowing said fuel cell to operate in reverse as an electrolyzer, thereby producing a supply of hydrogen;

    a hydrogen storage unit for supplying a stream of hydrogen to said fuel cell and storing said supply of hydrogen produced by said fuel cell when operating in reverse as an electrolyzer.
