Abstract

A cellular communications network including a base station subsystem (110) including a base station controller communicably coupled to a plurality of base stations (112), a user accessible mobile wireless communications device configuration control server (140) coupled to the base station subsystem (110), an network broadcast transmitting assisting base station (130), which may be coupled to the user accessible mobile wireless communications device configuration control server or to the base station subsystem. A mobile station is configured with configuration information associated with the assisting base station when the mobile station monitors the assisting base station.

Claims

1. A method in a mobile wireless communications device, comprising:

receiving pre-synchronization information from an assisting base station on a communications network broadcast channel,

the pre-synchronization information including not more information than sufficient to uniquely identify the assisting base station;

determining a unique base station identity of the assisting base station based upon the pre-synchronization information received.

2. The method of claim 1, configuring the mobile wireless communications device according to configuration information associated with the assisting base station while camping on a different base station.

3. The method of claim 1, configuring the mobile wireless communications device according to configuration information associated with the unique identity of the assisting base station without reselecting to the assisting base station.

4. The method of claim 3, configuring the mobile wireless communications device by configuring an alert mode of the mobile wireless communications device.

5. The method of claim 3, configuring the mobile wireless communications device by disabling the mobile wireless communications device.

6. The method of claim 1, the pre-synchronization information including synchronization channel and frequency correction channel information, determining the unique identity of the assisting base station by decoding a base station identification code from the pre-synchronization information.

7. The method of claim 1, determining the unique identity of the assisting base station by determining a scrambling code of the assisting base station.

8. The method of claim 1, configuring the mobile wireless communications device according to configuration information stored on the mobile wireless communications device in association with the unique identity of the assisting base station.

9. The method of claim 1, configuring the mobile wireless communications device according to configuration information in a setup message received by the mobile wireless communications device.

10. The method of claim 9, transmitting the unique identity of the assisting base station in response to receiving a paging request, receiving the setup message with the configuration information after sending the unique identity of the assisting base station.

11. A method in a mobile wireless communications device, comprising:

receiving base station information on a network broadcast channel from a plurality of base stations;

configuring the mobile wireless communications device according to configuration information associated with a base station without reselecting to the base station associated with the configuration information.

12. The method of claim 11,

configuring the mobile wireless communications device according to the configuration information associated with the base station while camping on another base station.

13. The method of claim 11,

receiving neighbor cell allocation information;

configuring the mobile wireless communications device according to the configuration information associated with the base station associated with the configuration information only if the base station associated with the configuration information is part of the neighbor cell allocation information.

14. The method of claim 13, reconfiguring the mobile wireless communications device when the base station associated with the configuration information is no longer part of the neighbor cell allocation information.

15. The method of claim 11, at least one or the base stations is an assisting base station,

receiving neighbor cell allocation information;

determining an identity of the assisting base station;

configuring the mobile wireless communications device according to configuration information associated with the assisting base station only if the identity of the assisting base station is part of the neighbor cell allocation information.

16. The method of claim 11, configuring the mobile wireless communications device according to configuration information stored on the mobile wireless communications device in association with an identity of the base station.

17. The method of claim 11, configuring the mobile wireless communications device according to configuration information in a setup message received by the mobile wireless communications device.

18. The method of claim 17, transmitting an identity of the base station in response to receiving a paging request, receiving the setup message with the configuration information after sending the identity of the base station.

19. The method of claim 11, configuring the mobile wireless communications device by configuring an alert mode of the mobile wireless communications device.

20. A method in a cellular communications network, comprising:

receiving mobile wireless communications device configuration information for an assisting base station from a user programmable mobile wireless communications device configuration server;

transmitting neighbor cell allocation information including base station information for the assisting base station for which the mobile wireless communications device configuration information was received;

transmitting unique identification information from the assisting base station, for which the mobile wireless communications device configuration information was received, on a communications network broadcast channel.

21. The method of claim 20, transmitting, from the assisting base station, not more than pre-synchronization information from which a unique identity of the assisting base station identity may be obtained on the network broadcast channel.

22. The method of claim 20, transmitting neighbor cell allocation information including unique identity information for the assisting base station for which the mobile wireless communications device configuration information was received;

23. The method of claim 20,

paging a mobile wireless communications device;

receiving an assisting base station identity from the paged mobile wireless communications device after paging, the assisting base station identity received corresponding to the assisting base station for which the mobile wireless communications device configuration information was received;

transmitting a setup message with mobile wireless communications device configuration information to the paged mobile wireless communications device after receiving the assisting base station identity.

24. The method of claim 20, controlling a transmission power of the assisting base station for which the mobile wireless communications device configuration information was received at least for a period corresponding to that during which information for the assisting base station for which the mobile wireless communications device configuration information was received is included with the neighbor cell allocation information.

25. The method of claim 20, identifying the assisting base station for which the mobile wireless communications device configuration information was received by transmitting unique identification information from the assisting base station on a communications network broadcast channel.

26. The method of claim 25, transmitting only synchronization and frequency correction information from the assisting base station, the assisting base station identity encoded on a channel containing the synchronization and frequency correction information.

27. A cellular communications network, comprising:

a base station subsystem including a base station controller communicably coupled to a plurality of base stations;

a user accessible mobile wireless communications device configuration control server coupled to the base station subsystem;

an assisting base station coupled to one of the user accessible mobile wireless communications device configuration control server or to the base station subsystem,

the assisting base station transmitting not more than presynchronization and unique identity information.

29. The cellular communications network of claim 27, the user accessible mobile wireless communications device configuration control server having a configuration control user accessible website.

28. The cellular communications network of claim 28, the assisting base station is a synchronization and frequency correction channel information transmitting base station.

30. A method in a mobile wireless communications device, comprising:

receiving information from an assisting base station on a communications network broadcast channel;

determining a unique identity of the assisting base station based upon the information received from the assisting base station;

communicating a location of the mobile wireless communications device by transmitting the unique identity of the assisting base station to the network without reselecting to the assisting base station.

31. The method of claim 30, receiving information from the assisting base station while camping on another base station;

determining the unique identity of the assisting base station while camping on another base station;

transmitting the unique identity of the assisting base station to the network while camping on another base station.
