Abstract

Device and method for rapid extraction of body tissue from an enclosed body cavity. Hollow entry cannula with optional core element provides entry into body tissue space such as bone marrow. Aspiration cannula is inserted through entry cannula into body tissue and is manipulated to advance directionally through body cavity. Optional stylet within aspiration cannula aids in advancing aspiration cannula through body tissue and is removed to facilitate extraction of body tissue through the aspiration cannula. Inlet openings near distal tip of aspiration cannula allow tissue aspiration, with negative pressure source at proximal end of aspiration cannula providing controlled negative pressure.

Aspiration cannula may be withdrawn and its path adjusted for multiple entries through the same entry point, following different paths through tissue space for subsequent aspiration of more tissue.

Claims

1. An apparatus for tissue aspiration, comprising:

an aspiration cannula comprising a flexible zone, a first end and a second end; and

a tip at the first end of the aspiration cannula;

wherein the tip disrupts a body tissue, allowing the aspiration cannula to advance through the body tissue and to aspirate an amount of the body tissue, and wherein the flexible zone allows the aspiration cannula to follow a linear or a non-linear path within the body tissue.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the aspiration cannula further comprises an aperture through which the amount body tissue enters the aspiration cannula.

3. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising an entry cannula for providing an entry into the body tissue.

4. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein the entry cannula comprises a core element for disrupting a boundary of the body tissue.

5. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising:

a steering wire coupled to the aspiration cannula for steering the aspiration cannula; and

a steering control coupled to the steering wire for controlling the steering wire.

6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the flexible zone of the aspiration cannula comprises a perforated wall for providing flexibility to the flexible zone.

7. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the aspiration cannula comprises a curved profile allowing the aspiration cannula to follow a linear or a non-linear path within the body tissue.

8. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the tip comprises a rotating drill tip.

9. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the body tissue is enclosed within a body cavity, and wherein the tip comprises a blunt head for preventing the first end of the aspiration cannula to exit the body cavity when advancing through the body tissue.

10. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the tip comprises a sonication device for disrupting the body tissue.

11. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the aspiration cannula comprises a navigation element for providing feedback for assisting guidance within the body tissue.

12. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the navigation element comprises an ultra-sound transducer.

13. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the aspiration cannula further comprises a port for administering a substance into the aspiration cannula.

14. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a groove cup for receiving the aspiration cannula and for providing directional support to the aspiration cannula.

15. A tissue aspiration method, comprising:

providing an entry into a body tissue of a host;

inserting an aspiration cannula into the body tissue through the provided entry; and

aspirating a first amount of the body tissue;

wherein the aspirating step comprises applying negative pressure to the body tissue while withdrawing the aspiration cannula.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the inserting step further comprises adjusting a directionality of the aspiration cannula within said body tissue.

17. The method of claim 15, further comprising using a second amount of the first amount of the body tissue in a procedure in the same host.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein the procedure comprises delivering the second amount of the body tissue to a region of the body of the host.

19. The method of claim 18, further comprising enriching the second amount of the body tissue prior to the delivering step.

20. The method of claim 18, wherein the region comprises a cardiac tissue of the host.

21. The method of claim 20, further comprising enriching the second amount of the body tissue prior to the delivering step.

22. A tissue aspiration method, comprising:

providing an entry into a body tissue of a host;

aspirating a first amount of the body tissue; and

aspirating a second amount of the body tissue;

wherein the first aspirating step comprises causing an aspiration cannula to follow a first path through the body tissue, and the second aspirating step comprises causing the aspiration cannula to follow a second path through the body tissue, and wherein the first aspirating step and the second aspirating step proceed using the same provided entry.

23. The method of claim 22, wherein the first aspirating step further comprises withdrawing the aspiration cannula while continuing to aspirate body tissue.

24. The method of claim 22, wherein the second aspirating step further comprises adjusting a curvature of the aspiration cannula, thereby enabling the aspiration cannula to follow the second path through the body tissue.

25. The method of claim 22, wherein the second aspirating step further comprises steering the aspiration cannula, thereby enabling the aspiration cannula to follow the second path through the body tissue.

26. The method of claim 22, further comprising using a third amount of the first or second amount of the body tissue in a procedure in the same host.

27. The method of claim 26, wherein the procedure comprises delivering the third amount of the body tissue to a region of the body of the host.

28. The method of claim 27, wherein the region comprises a cardiac tissue of the host.
