Abstract

A dedicated distal protection guidewire having proximal and distal stops disposed about an elongated core wire is disclosed. A guidewire in accordance with the present invention includes an elongated core wire having a relatively stiff proximal section and a relatively flexible distal section, a distal stop disposed about a portion of the elongated core wire, and a proximal stop disposed about a portion of the elongated core wire proximal the distal stop. The distal stop may be formed from an enlarged outer diameter portion on the elongated core wire, or may be formed from an object disposed about and secured to a portion of the elongated core wire. The proximal stop may include an O-ring disposed within a recessed surface on the elongated core wire, or an annular ring having several circumferentially disposed notches. In one exemplary embodiment, a distal protection guidewire may include a proximal stop comprising a first tubular member, a second tubular member, and a plurality of expandable struts actuatable between a collapsed position and a deployed position.

Claims

1. A guidewire for use in a medical procedure, comprising:

an elongated core wire having a proximal section and a distal section;

a distal stop disposed about the distal section of said elongated core wire; and

a proximal stop disposed about a portion of said elongated core wire proximal the distal stop, the proximal stop comprising a polymeric member configured to displace when an intravascular device is advanced thereon.

2. The guidewire of claim 1, further comprising a wire coil disposed about a portion of said distal section.

3. The guidewire of claim 2, wherein said wire coil is helically disposed about said distal section.

4. The guidewire of claim 2, wherein said wire coil is comprised of a single coil segment.

5. The guidewire of claim 2, wherein said wire coil is comprised of two or more coil segments.

6. The guidewire of claim 2, wherein said wire coil is formed of a stainless steel material.

7. The guidewire of claim 2, wherein said wire coil is formed of a shape-memory material.

8. The guidewire of claim 7, wherein said shape-memory material is nickel titanium alloy.

9. The guidewire of claim 2, wherein said wire coil includes a radiopaque material.

10. The guidewire of claim 1, wherein said distal stop is formed from an enlarged outer diameter portion on the elongated core wire.

11. The guidewire of claim 1, wherein said distal stop is formed from an object disposed about and secured to a portion of the elongated core wire.

12. The guidewire of claim 1, wherein the outer diameter of said distal stop is at least 0.018 inches.

13. The guidewire of claim 1, further comprising a polymeric coating on at least a portion of said distal section.

14. The guidewire of claim 13, wherein said polymeric coating comprises polytetrafluoroethylene.

15. The guidewire of claim 1, wherein said polymeric member is an annular object having a plurality of circumferentially disposed notches.

16. The guidewire of claim 1, wherein said polymeric member is an O-ring.

17. The guidewire of claim 1, wherein said intravascular device is an embolic protection filter.

18. A guidewire for use in a medical procedure, comprising:

an elongated core wire having a proximal section and a distal section;

a distal stop disposed about the distal section of said elongated core wire;

a proximal stop disposed about a portion of said elongated core wire proximal the distal stop, the proximal stop comprising a polymeric member configured to displace when an intravascular device is advanced thereon; and

a wire coil disposed about a portion of said distal section.

19. The guidewire of claim 18, wherein said wire coil is helically disposed about said distal section.

20. The guidewire of claim 18, wherein said wire coil is comprised of a single coil segment.

21. The guidewire of claim 18, wherein said wire coil is comprised of two or more coil segments.

22. The guidewire of claim 18, wherein said wire coil is formed of a stainless steel material.

23. The guidewire of claim 18, wherein said wire coil is formed of a shape-memory material.

24. The guidewire of claim 23, wherein said shape-memory material is nickel titanium alloy.

25. The guidewire of claim 18, wherein said wire coil includes a radiopaque material.

26. The guidewire of claim 18, wherein said distal stop is formed from an enlarged outer diameter portion on the elongated core wire.

27. The guidewire of claim 18, wherein said distal stop is formed from an object disposed about and secured to a portion of the elongated core wire.

28. The guidewire of claim 18, wherein the outer diameter of said distal stop is at least 0.018 inches.

29. The guidewire of claim 18, further comprising a polymeric coating on at least a portion of said distal section.

30. The guidewire of claim 29, wherein said polymeric coating comprises polytetrafluoroethylene.

31. The guidewire of claim 18, wherein said proximal stop is an annular object having a plurality of circumferentially disposed notches.

32. The guidewire of claim 18, wherein said proximal stop is an O-ring.

33. The guidewire of claim 18, wherein said intravascular device is an embolic protection filter.

34. A guidewire for use in a medical procedure, comprising:

an elongated core wire having a proximal section and a distal section;

a proximal stop disposed about a portion of the elongated core wire, said proximal stop including;

a first tubular member and a second tubular member each having a proximal end and a distal end, wherein the first tubular member is fixedly attached to a portion of the elongated core wire, and wherein the second tubular member is slidably disposed along the elongated core wire distal said first tubular member; and

a plurality of struts attached at a proximal end to the first tubular member, and at a distal end to the second tubular member, wherein said plurality of struts are actuatable between a collapsed position and a deployed position, the collapsed position permitting proximal displacement of the filter with respect to the proximal stop, the deployed position preventing proximal displacement of the filter with respect to the proximal stop.
