Abstract

A method of making a photoactive coating includes depositing a first coating material containing zirconium oxide over at least a portion of a substrate and depositing a second coating material containing titanium oxide over at least a portion of the first coating material to provide a coated substrate. At least one of the first and second coating materials is deposited by pyrolytic deposition.

Claims

1. A method of making a photoactive coating, comprising the steps of:

depositing a first coating material comprising zirconium oxide over at least a portion of a substrate defined as a first depositing step; and

depositing a second coating material comprising titanium oxide over at least a portion of the first coating material defined as a second depositing step to provide a coated substrate,

wherein at least one of the first and second coating materials is deposited by pyrolytic deposition.

2. The method of claim 1, including heating the substrate prior to or during the first depositing step such that the substrate has a temperature of at least 400°

C. at the beginning of the first depositing step.

3. The method of claim 1, including heating the substrate such that the substrate has a temperature of at least 600°

C. at the beginning of the first depositing step.

4. The method of claim 1, including heating the substrate such that the substrate has a temperature of at least 400°

C. at the beginning of the second depositing step.

5. The method of claim 1, including heating the substrate such that the substrate has a temperature of at least 600°

C. at the beginning of the second depositing step.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the first coating material has a dry film thickness greater than 10 Å

.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the first coating material has a dry film thickness in the range of 100 Å

to 500 Å

.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the first coating material has a dry film thickness in the range of 100 Å

to 300 Å

.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the second coating material has a dry film thickness greater than 100 Å

.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the second coating material has a dry film thickness in the range of 100 Å

to 500 Å

.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the second coating material has a dry film thickness in the range of 100 Å

to 300 Å

.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the substrate is glass.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein the photoactive coating is photohydrophilic.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein the photoactive coating is photocatalytic.

15. The method of claim 1, wherein the coated substrate has a contact angle with water of less than or equal to 20°

after 60 to 90 minutes exposure to electromagnetic radiation having a wavelength of 340 nm at an intensity of 28 W/m² at the coating surface.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the contact angle is less than 10°

after 90 minutes of exposure.

17. A coated substrate made by the method of claim 11.

18. An article, comprising:

a substrate;

a zirconium oxide-containing layer pyrolytically deposited over at least a portion of the substrate; and

a titanium oxide-containing layer pyrolytically deposited over at least a portion of the zirconium oxide-containing layer.

19. The article of claim 18, wherein the zirconium oxide-containing layer has a thickness greater than 100 Å

.

20. The article of claim 18, wherein the titanium oxide-containing layer is in direct contact with the zirconium oxide-containing layer.

21. The article of claim 18, wherein the titanium dioxide-containing layer has a thickness greater than 100 Å

.

22. A photoactively hydrophilic article, comprising:

a substrate;

a zirconium oxide-containing layer pyrolytically deposited over at least a portion of the substrate and having a thickness of at least 100 Å

; and

a titanium dioxide-containing layer pyrolytically deposited over at least a portion of the zirconium oxide layer and having a thickness of at least 100 Å
