Abstract

An embodiment provides a method for treating a tissue site comprising delivering energy to the tissue site using an energy delivery device; utilizing patient feedback to titrate the delivery of energy to the tissue site to reduce injury to a surface of the tissue site; and imparting a thermal injury to a portion of tissue within the tissue site.

Another embodiment provides a method for treating a target tissue site comprising delivering energy to the target tissue site using an energy delivery device; receiving feedback indicative of a patient pain or thermal sensation level; utilizing a database of digitally encoded correlations between at least one tissue treatment parameter and an associated pain or thermal sensation level to titrate the delivery of energy to the tissue site to reduce injury to a surface or layer of the tissue site; and imparting thermal injury to a portion of tissue within the tissue site.

Claims

1. A method of energetically treating a target tissue site, the method comprising:

delivering energy to the tissue site using an energy delivery device;

utilizing patient feedback to titrate the delivery of energy to the tissue site to reduce injury to a surface of the tissue site; and

imparting a thermal injury to a portion of tissue within the tissue site.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the portion of tissue is one of a collagen matrix or a subjacent collagen matrix.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the energy is one of electromagnetic energy, electrical energy, RF energy, optical energy, thermal energy, acoustical energy, topically delivered energy or mechanical energy.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the patient feedback is utilized to substantially preserve the surface or an epidermal layer at the tissue site.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the patient feedback is utilized to optimize reshaping of tissue at the tissue site.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the patient feedback is utilized to optimize tightening or smoothing of one of a layer or a skin layer at the tissue site.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the patient feedback is utilized to optimize or increase thermal lipolysis at the tissue site.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the patient feedback is at least one of verbal feedback, biometric feedback or a biometric signal.

9. The method of claim 8, the biometric signal includes a first and a second signal, the method further comprising:

comparing the first signal to the second signal; and

utilizing the comparison of the first signal to the second to titrate the delivery of energy to the tissue site.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the patient feedback is a patient determined scale of pain or thermal sensation.

11. The method of claim 10, further comprising:

determining the patient determined scale.

12. The method of claim 11, further comprising:

delivering energy to determine the patient determined scale.

13. The method of claim 11, further comprising:

re-determining or updating the scale during the course of a tissue treatment.

14. The method of claim 10, further comprising:

correlating a biometric signal to the patient determined scale.

15. The method of claim 14, further comprising:

utilizing the correlated biometric signal to titrate at least one of the delivery of energy or a cooling media to the tissue site.

16. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

contracting at least a portion of tissue within the tissue site.

17. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

delivering a cooling media to the tissue site or a surface of the tissue site.

18. The method of claim 17, further comprising:

utilizing the patient feedback to titrate the delivery of the cooling media.

19. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

producing a reversal thermal gradient within at least a portion of the tissue site.

20. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

heating a subjacent layer or a dermal layer within the tissue site.

21. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

producing a wound healing response within the tissue site.

22. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

substantially preserving at least a portion of a surface, a layer or an epidermal layer at or adjacent the tissue site.

23. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

tightening at least one of a layer, a surface layer, a skin layer, a dermal layer or a skin portion of the tissue site.

24. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

rejuvenating at least a portion of tissue at the tissue site.

25. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

reshaping at least a portion of tissue at the tissue site or the surface of the tissue site.

26. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

increasing at least one of a thickness or an elasticity of at least a portion of the tissue site.

27. A system for regulating a tissue treatment procedure using patient feedback, the system comprising:

a processor;

a database coupled to the processor, the database including a plurality of records, at least one record of the plurality including at least one tissue treatment parameter and a pain or thermal sensation level associated with the at least one treatment parameter; and

a control module coupled to at least one of the database or the processor, the control module configured to control an energy delivery parameter responsive to an input from at least one of a patient or the database.

28. The system of claim 27, wherein the at least one treatment parameter is at least one of a target tissue site location, an amount of anesthetic, a type of anesthetic, a delivery rate of anesthetic, an anesthetic delivery site, a power, a power wave form, a duty cycle, an energy delivery rate, an amount of delivered energy, a frequency, an impedance, a cooling rate, a heat transfer media delivery rate, a cooling media delivery rate, a fluid flow rate or a cooling fluid flow rate.

29. The system of claim 27, wherein the energy delivery parameter is at least one of an RF energy delivery parameter, an optical energy delivery parameter, a power, a power wave form, a duty cycle, an energy delivery rate, an amount of delivered energy, a frequency, an impedance, a cooling rate, a heat transfer media delivery rate, a cooling media delivery rate, a fluid flow rate or a cooling fluid flow rate.

30. The system of claim 27, wherein the database is resident on one of a memory device, a non volatile memory device or a computer readable storage medium.

31. The system of claim 27, further comprising:

a sensor coupled to one of the processor or the module.

32. The system of claim 27, wherein the control module is coupled to one of a control system or a control system including a sensor.

33. The system of claim 32, the control system is configured to be coupled to at least one of an energy source, an electromagnetic energy source, an RF energy source, an optical energy source, an energy delivery device, an RF energy delivery device, an optical energy delivery device, a fluid delivery device or a cooling device.

34. The system of claim 27, wherein the input is a biometric signal and the control module is configured to control the energy delivery parameter responsive to the signal or a pain or thermal sensation level correlated to the signal.

35. The system of claim 34, wherein the module is configured to determine a real time pain or thermal sensation level based on the biometric signal.

36. The system of claim 34, wherein the biometric signal is at least one of an EKG, a heart rate, a blood pressure, a respiration rate, an EMG, an EEG, a tissue temperature, a skin temperature, a skin color, a skin reflectance, or a skin conductivity.

37. The system of claim 34, wherein the biometric signal is a plurality of biometric signals.

38. The system of claim 37, wherein the plurality of biometric signals includes a first signal and a second signal, the first signal from a treatment site and the second signal from a non treatment site.

39. The system of claim 27, wherein the input includes an anesthetic variable and the control module is configured to control the energy delivery parameter responsive to a pain or thermal sensation level correlated to the anesthetic variable.

40. The system of claim 39, wherein the module is configured to determine a pain or thermal sensation level based on the anesthetic variable.

41. The system of claim 39, wherein the anesthetic variable is at least one of an amount of anesthetic, a delivery rate of anesthetic, an anesthetic delivery method, an anesthetic delivery site or a type of anesthetic.

42. The system of claim 27, wherein the associated pain or thermal sensation level is at a selected tissue location, the input includes at least one of the selected tissue location or a target tissue site location, and the control module is configured to control the energy delivery parameter responsive to a pain or thermal sensation level correlated to the target tissue site location.

43. The system of claim 42, wherein the module is configured to determine a real time pain or thermal sensation level based on the selected tissue location.

44. The system of claim 42, wherein the selected tissue location is a non-target tissue site, a control site, a contralateral site to the target tissue site or a fingertip.

45. A computer readable medium on which is stored a database, the database including a plurality of records, at least one record of the plurality including at least one tissue treatment parameter and a pain or thermal sensation level associated with the at least one treatment parameter, the database configured to be coupled a control module or a control system configured to control an energy delivery parameter responsive to an input from at least one of a patient or the database.

46. The medium of claim 45, wherein the at least one treatment parameter is at least one of a target tissue site location, an amount of anesthetic, a type of anesthetic, a delivery rate of anesthetic, an anesthetic delivery site, a power, a power wave form, a duty cycle, an energy delivery rate, an amount of delivered energy, a frequency, an impedance, a cooling rate, a heat transfer media delivery rate, a cooling media delivery rate, a fluid flow rate or a cooling fluid flow rate.

47. A system for regulating a tissue treatment procedure using patient feedback, the system comprising:

a computing means;

a database means coupled to the computing means, the database means including a plurality of records, at least one record of the plurality including at least one tissue treatment parameter and a pain or thermal sensation level associated with the at least one treatment parameter; and

a control means coupled to at least one of the database means or the computing means, the control means configured to control an energy delivery parameter responsive to an input from at least one of a patient or the database means.

48. A method of treating a target tissue site, the method comprising:

delivering energy to the target tissue site using an energy delivery device;

receiving feedback indicative of a patient pain or thermal sensation level;

utilizing a database of digitally encoded correlations between at least one tissue treatment parameter and an associated pain or thermal sensation level to titrate the delivery of energy to the tissue site to reduce injury to a surface or a layer of the tissue site; and

imparting a thermal injury to a portion of tissue within the tissue site.

49. The method of claim 48, wherein the portion of tissue is one of a collagen matrix or a subjacent collagen matrix.

50. The method of claim 48, wherein the at least one treatment parameter is at least one of a target tissue site location, an amount of anesthetic, a type of anesthetic, a delivery rate of anesthetic, an anesthetic delivery site, a power, a power wave form, a duty cycle, an energy delivery rate, an amount of delivered energy, a frequency, an impedance, a cooling rate, a heat transfer media delivery rate, a cooling media delivery rate, a fluid flow rate or a cooling fluid flow rate.

51. The method of claim 48, wherein the feedback is at least one of verbal feedback, biometric feedback, a biometric signal, an EKG, a heart rate, a blood pressure, a respiration rate, an EMG, a EEG, a tissue temperature, a skin temperature, a skin color, a skin reflectance, an erythema level, eryrthema measurement, or a skin conductivity.

The method of claim 48, wherein the energy delivery parameter is at least one of an RF energy delivery parameter, an optical energy delivery parameter, a power, a power wave form, a duty cycle, an energy delivery rate, an amount of delivered energy, a frequency, an impedance, a cooling rate, a heat transfer media delivery rate, a cooling media delivery rate, a fluid flow rate or a cooling fluid flow rate.

53. The method of claim 48, wherein the energy is one of electromagnetic energy, electrical energy, RF energy, optical energy, thermal energy, acoustical energy, topically delivered energy or mechanical energy.

54. The method of claim 48, further comprising:

utilizing the database to substantially preserve the surface or an epidermal layer of the tissue site.

55. The method of claim 48, further comprising:

utilizing the database to optimize reshaping of tissue at the tissue site.

56. The method of claim 48, further comprising:

utilizing the database to optimize tightening or smoothing of one of the layer or a skin layer of the tissue site.

57. The method of claim 48, wherein the database is utilized to optimize or increase thermal lipolysis at the tissue site.

58. The method of claim 48, further comprising:

utilizing the database to titrate a delivery of cooling media to the tissue site or the surface of the tissue site.

59. The method of claim 48, further comprising:

calibrating the pain or thermal sensation level to the feedback based on the at least one treatment parameter.

60. The method of claim 48, further comprising:

utilizing the database to correlate a pain or thermal sensation level for a first treatment parameter to a pain or thermal sensation level for a second tissue treatment parameter.

61. The method of claim 48, further comprising:

contracting at least a portion of tissue within the tissue site.

62. The method of claim 48, further comprising:

heating a subjacent layer or a dermis within the tissue site.

63. The method of claim 48, further comprising:

producing a wound healing response within the tissue site.

64. The method of claim 48, further comprising:

substantially preserving at least a portion of the surface, the layer or an epidermal layer at or adjacent the tissue site.

65. The method of claim 48, further comprising:

tightening at least one of the layer, a surface layer, a skin layer, a dermal layer or a skin portion of the tissue site.

66. The method of claim 48, further comprising:

reshaping at least a portion of tissue at the tissue site or the surface of the tissue site.
