Abstract

A method and apparatus are provided for determining adjustments to be made to a transmitter based on the velocity or location of a wireless communication device in relation to a wireless network infrastructure. The transmitter to be adjusted can be located in either the wireless communication device, or in a device in the wireless communication infrastructure, or both.

Claims

1. A method of controlling transmitted power in a wireless communication system, the method comprising:

determining velocity of a wireless communication device in relation to a device located in a wireless network infrastructure;

determining the power level of a communication system signal transmitted over a wireless channel between the wireless communication device and the device located in the infrastructure;

determining adjustments to the transmit power of the communication system signal based on the determined velocity of the wireless communication device; and

providing the transmit power level adjustments to a transmitter of the received signals.

2. A method as defined in claim 1, wherein determining adjustments to transmit power level at which a signal of the wireless communication system is transmitted results in a future desired received signal power level.

3. A method as defined in claim 1, further comprising determining an integration interval to be used in measuring the power level of the signal of the wireless communication received based on the determined velocity.

4. A method as defined in claim 1, wherein determining velocity, measuring power, determining adjustments to the transmit power level, and providing the transmit power level adjustments to a transmitter are performed in the wireless communication device.

5. A method as defined in claim 1, wherein determining velocity, measuring power, determining adjustments to the transmit power level, and providing the transmit power level adjustments to a transmitter are performed in performed in a wireless network infrastructure.

6. A method as defined in claim 1, wherein the velocity of the communication device is determined based on information from a navigational receiver.

7. A method as defined in claim 6, wherein the navigational receiver is a Global Positioning System receiver.

8. A method as defined in claim 1, wherein the velocity of the wireless communication device is determined in accordance with at least two location measurements of the wireless communication device, wherein the measurements are made at different, known times, and the velocity of the communication device is based on the at least two location measurements and their respective measurement times.

9. A method of determining a power control loop update frequency for a wireless communication system, the method comprising:

determining a velocity of a wireless communication device; and

determining a power control loop update frequency for the wireless communication system based on the velocity.

10. A method as defined in claim 9, wherein determining the velocity and determining the power control loop update frequency are performed in a wireless communication device.

11. A method as defined in claim 9, wherein determining the velocity and determining the power control loop update frequency are performed in a wireless network infrastructure device.

12. A method as defined in claim 9, wherein the velocity of the wireless communication device is determined based on information from a navigational receiver.

13. A method as defined in claim 12, wherein the navigational receiver is a Global Positioning System receiver.

14. A method as defined in claim 9, wherein the velocity of the wireless communication device is determined in accordance with at least two location measurements of the wireless communication device, wherein the measurements are made at different, known times, and the velocity of the wireless communication device is based on the at least two location measurements and their respective measurement times.

15. A method as defined in claim 9, wherein determining the power control loop frequency comprises selecting a frequency from a plurality of predetermined frequencies based on the velocity of the wireless communication device.

16. A method as defined in claim 15, wherein one of the predetermined frequencies is 500 Hz.

17. A method as defined in claim 15, wherein one of the predetermined frequencies is 1500 Hz.

18. A method of controlling transmitted power in a wireless communication system, the method comprising:

determining velocity of the wireless communication device in relation to a device in a wireless network infrastructure;

predicting future changes to power level of a signal in the wireless communication system received over a wireless channel between the wireless communication device and the device in the wireless network infrastructure; and

determining desired adjustments to transmit power level of the signal for resulting in a future desired received signal power level.

19. A method as defined in claim 18, wherein determining the velocity of the wireless communication device, predicting future changes to power level of the signal, and determining desired adjustments to transmit power level are performed in a wireless communication device.

20. A method as defined in claim 18, wherein determining the velocity of the wireless communication device, predicting future changes to the power level of the signal, and determining desired adjustments to transmit power level are performed in a wireless network infrastructure.

21. A method as defined in claim 18, wherein the velocity of the wireless communication device is determined based on information from a navigational receiver.

22. A method as defined in claim 21, wherein the navigational receiver is a Global Positioning System receiver.

23. A method as defined in claim 18, wherein the velocity of the wireless communication device is determined in accordance with at least two location measurements of the wireless communication device, wherein the measurements are made at different, known times, and the velocity of the wireless communication device is based on the at least two location measurements and their respective measurement times.

24. A method of controlling transmitted power in a wireless communication system, the method comprising:

determining a location of a wireless communication device in relation to a device in a wireless network infrastructure thereby determining received signal situation; and

determining adjustments to a transmit power level in accordance with the determined location.

25. A method as defined in claim 24, wherein determining a location of a wireless communication device and determining adjustments to a transmit power level are performed in a wireless communication device.

26. A method as defined in claim 24, wherein determining a location of a wireless communication device and determining adjustments to a transmit power level are performed in a wireless network infrastructure.

27. A method as defined in claim 24, wherein the location of the communication device is determined based on information from a navigational receiver.

28. A method as defined in claim 27, wherein the navigational receiver is a Global Positioning System receiver.

29. A method of determining an integration interval in a wireless communication system, the method comprising:

determining velocity of a wireless communication device in relation to a device located in a wireless network infrastructure; and

determining an integration interval to be used in measuring power at which a signal of the wireless communication system is received based on the determined velocity.

30. A method as defined in claim 29, wherein the measured power at which the signal of the wireless communication system is received is used to determining adjustments to transmit power level at which the signal of the wireless communication system is transmitted in a future transmission.

31. A method as defined in claim 29, wherein determining velocity and determining an integration interval are performed in the wireless communication device.

32. A method as defined in claim 29, wherein determining velocity and determining an integration interval are performed in performed in a wireless network infrastructure.

33. A method as defined in claim 29, wherein the velocity of the communication device is determined based on information from a navigational receiver.

34. A method as defined in claim 33, wherein the navigational receiver is a Global Positioning System receiver.

35. A method as defined in claim 29, wherein the velocity of the wireless communication device is determined in accordance with at least two location measurements of the wireless communication device, wherein the measurements are made at different, known times, and the velocity of the communication device is based on the at least two location measurements and their respective measurement times.

36. A method of controlling transmitted power in a wireless communication system, the method comprising:

determining velocity of a wireless communication device in relation to a device located in a wireless network infrastructure;

determining an integration interval to be used in measuring power level at which a signal of the wireless communication system is receiver based on the velocity of the wireless communication device;

measuring power level of the signal of the wireless communication system received over a wireless channel between the wireless communication device and the device in the wireless network infrastructure using the integration interval;

determining adjustments to transmit power at which a signal of the wireless communication system is transmitted in accordance with the determined velocity of the device; and

providing the transmit power level adjustments to a transmitter of the received signals.

37. A method as defined in claim 36, wherein determining adjustments to transmit power level at which a signal of the wireless communication system is transmitted results in a future desired received signal power level.

38. A method as defined in claim 36, wherein determining velocity, determining the integration interval, measuring power, determining adjustments to the transmit power level, and providing the transmit power level adjustments to a transmitter are performed in the wireless communication device.

39. A method as defined in claim 36, wherein determining velocity, determining the integration interval, measuring power, determining adjustments to the transmit power level, and providing the transmit power level adjustments to a transmitter are performed in performed in a wireless network infrastructure.

40. A method as defined in claim 36, wherein the velocity of the communication device is determined based on information from a navigational receiver.

41. A method as defined in claim 40, wherein the navigational receiver is a Global Positioning System receiver.

42. A method as defined in claim 36, wherein the velocity of the wireless communication device is determined in accordance with at least two location measurements of the wireless communication device, wherein the measurements are made at different, known times, and the velocity of the communication device is based on the at least two location measurements and their respective measurement times.

43. A wireless communication device comprising:

a navigational receiver configured to receive navigation data and to output a velocity of the wireless communication device;

a receiver configured to receive signals from a wireless network infrastructure; and

a controller configured to receive the wireless communication device velocity from the navigational receiver and a measurement of the power level of a received signal from the receiver and to determine adjustments to a transmitter based on the velocity and received power level.

44. A wireless communication device as defined in claim 43, wherein the navigational receiver is a Global Positioning System receiver.

45. A wireless communication device as defined in claim 43, wherein the transmitter to be adjusted is in the wireless communication device.

46. A wireless communication device as defined in claim 43, wherein the transmitter to be adjusted is in a device in a wireless network infrastructure.

47. A wireless network infrastructure device comprising:

a receiver configured to receive signals from a wireless communication device; and

a controller configured to receive data indicating a velocity of the wireless communication device and a measurement of the power level of a received signal and to determine adjustments to a transmitter based on the velocity and received power level.

48. A wireless network infrastructure device as defined in claim 47, wherein the data indicating the velocity of the wireless communication device is received from the wireless communication device.

49. A wireless network infrastructure device as defined in claim 48, wherein the data indicating the velocity of the wireless communication device is determined by a Global Positioning System receiver

50. A wireless network infrastructure device as defined in claim 48, wherein the data indicating the velocity of the wireless communication device is determined in the wireless network infrastructure.

51. A wireless network infrastructure device as defined in claim 48, wherein the transmitter to be adjusted is in the wireless network infrastructure.

52. A wireless network infrastructure device as defined in claim 48, wherein the transmitter to be adjusted is in the wireless communication device.

53. The method of controlling transmitted power in a wireless communication system, wherein determining adjustments to the transmit power of the communication system signal is based on both the determined velocity of the wireless communication device and the location of the wireless communication device.
