Abstract

A system and method for providing an overview of a plurality of tasks running on a target environment which includes the steps of receiving event data representing a plurality of events in the plurality of contexts over a monitoring period displaying a detailed graphical representation of the event data log using the event data, and displaying a schematic representation of the detailed graphical representation over the monitoring period using only a portion of the event data. The schematic representation is indicative of an activity density of the event data over the monitoring period.

Claims

1. A method for providing an overview of a plurality of contexts of a target environment, the method comprising:

receiving event data representing a plurality of events in the plurality of contexts over a monitoring period;

displaying a schematic representation of the event data over the monitoring period using only a portion of the event data, the schematic representation being indicative of an activity density of the event data over the monitoring period; and

displaying, together with the schematic representation, a detailed graphical representation of the event data over a specified portion of the monitoring period using the event data for the specified portion of the monitoring period.

The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the displaying includes displaying the schematic representation and the detailed graphical representation on a host computing environment, and wherein the method further comprises, prior to the displaying step, uploading the event data from the target environment to the host computing environment.

3. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the displaying of the schematic representation includes displaying a graph defining an x-axis and a y-axis.

4. The method as recited in claim 3 wherein one of the x-axis and the y-axis represents units of time during the monitoring period.

5. The method as recited in claim 3 wherein one of the x-axis and the y-axis represents a sequence of events during the monitoring period.

6. The method as recited in claim 3 wherein the displaying of the schematic representation includes displaying an outline of executing contexts from the event data.

7. The method as recited in claim 3 wherein the displaying of the schematic representation includes displaying a bar graph including a plurality of bars, each bar representing event activity.

8. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein the displaying of the schematic representation includes displaying an event intensity graph including a plurality of graphical elements, each graphical element being indicative of an event intensity at one of the plurality of contexts.

9. The method as recited in claim 8 wherein a color intensity of each of the plurality of graphical elements is indicative of the event intensity.

10. The method as recited in claim 1 further comprising receiving, from a user, a selection defining the specified portion of the monitoring period.

11. The method as recited in claim 10 further comprising receiving from a user, a selection generating a marker associated with an item of the schematic representation and wherein the displaying the detailed graphical representation includes displaying an indication of the marker.

12. The method as recited in claim 1 further comprising displaying an analysis pack view of the event data, the analysis pack view showing an analysis factor in graphical format over the monitoring period.

13. The method as recited in claim 12 wherein the analysis factor includes one of memory usage, semaphore count, allocation of an object, deallocation of an object, interrupts, entry to a context, exit from a context, time in a context, time that tasks are interrupted, CPU usage, amount of time CPU is idle, amount of time CPU is not idle, total semaphores created or deleted, and time in a protected domain

14. A system comprising:

an executable logging component, the executable logging component configured to log event data representing a plurality of events in a plurality of contexts running on a target environment over a monitoring period;

an executable graphing component, the executable graphing component configured to display a schematic representation of event data over the monitoring period using only a portion of the event data, and to display, together with the schematic representation, a detailed graphical representation of event data over a specified portion of the monitoring period using the event data for the specified portion of the monitoring period.

15. The system as recited in claim 14, wherein the executable logging component is configured to execute in the target environment.

16. The system as recited in claim 15, wherein the executable graphing component and the executable logging component both are configured to execute on single computer.

17. The system as recited in claim 14, further comprising a host computing environment coupled to the target environment and to the display, the executable graphing component configured to execute on the host computing environment.

18. The system as recited in claim 17, wherein the executable logging component is configured to execute on the target environment.

19. The system as recited in claim 18, wherein host computing environment is configured to upload the logged event data from the target environment.

20. The system as recited in claim 14 wherein the schematic representation indicates an activity density of the event data over the monitoring period.

21. The system as recited in claim 14, wherein the schematic representation includes a graph defining an x-axis and a y-axis.

22. The system as recited in claim 21 wherein one of the x-axis and the y-axis represents units of time during the monitoring period.

23. The system as recited in claim 21 wherein one of the x-axis and the y-axis represents a sequence of events during the monitoring period.

24. The system as recited in claim 14 wherein the schematic representation is an outline of executing contexts.

25. The system as recited in claim 14 wherein the schematic representation includes a bar graph including a plurality of bars, each bar representing event activity.

26. The system as recited in claim 14 wherein the schematic representation includes an event intensity graph including a plurality of graphical elements, each graphical element being indicative of an event intensity at one of the plurality of contexts.

27. The system as recited in claim 26 wherein a color intensity of each of the plurality of detailed graphical elements is indicative of the event intensity.

28. The system as recited in claim 14 wherein the executable graphing component is configured to receive a selection, from a user, defining the specified portion of the monitoring period of the schematic representation.

29. The system as recited in claim 28 wherein the executable graphing component is configured to receive a selection, from a user, generating a marker associated with an item of the schematic representation and to display an indication of the marker in the detailed graphical representation.

30. The system as recited in claim 14 wherein the executable graphing component is further configured to construct the schematic representation including an analysis pack factor.

31. A host computing environment for providing an overview of a plurality of contexts in a target environment, the host computing environment comprising:

an executable component, the executable component configured to receive from the target environment event data over a monitoring period, the event data representing a plurality of events in the plurality of contexts, and configured to display a schematic representation of the event data over the monitoring period using only a portion of the event data, and to display, together with the schematic representation, a detailed graphical representation over a specified portion of the event data using the event data for the specified portion of the monitoring period.

32. The host computing environment as recited in claim 31 wherein the executable component is configured to receive a selection, from a user, defining the specific portion.

33. The host computing environment as recited in claim 32 wherein the executable component is configured to receive a selection, from a user, generating a marker associated with an item of the schematic representation and to display an indication of the marker in the detailed graphical representation.

34. A computer readable media, having stored thereon, computer executable process steps operable to control a computer to display a schematic representation of an event data over a monitoring period on a display using only a portion of the event data, the event data representing a plurality of events associated with a plurality of contexts, and to display, together with the schematic representation, a detailed graphical representation of the event data over a specified portion of the monitoring period using the event data for the specified portion of the monitoring period.

35. A method for providing an overview of a plurality of contexts in a target environment, comprising:

receiving event data representing a plurality of events in the plurality of contexts over a monitoring period;

constructing a first graphical representation of the event data over the monitoring period using the event data;

constructing a second graphical representation over a specific portion of the monitoring period using the event data for that portion of the monitoring period; and

simultaneously displaying the first representation and the second representation on a graphical user interface, the first representation displayed in a first scale, the second representation displayed in a second scale, the second scale larger than the first scale.

36. The method as recited in claim 39 further comprising receiving, from a user, a selection defining the specific portion of the monitoring period.

37. A host computing environment for providing an overview of a plurality of contexts in a target environment, the host computing environment comprising:

an executable component configured to receive from the target environment event data over a monitoring period, the event data representing a plurality of events in the plurality of contexts, and configured to display a first representation of the event data over the monitoring period using the event data, and to display, together with the first representation, a second representation over a specified portion of the event data using the event data for the specified portion of the monitoring period, the first representation displayed in a first scale, the second representation displayed in a second scale, the second scale larger than the first scale.

38. A system comprising:

an executable logging component, the executable logging component configured to log event data representing a plurality of events in a plurality of contexts in a target environment over a monitoring period;

an executable graphing component, the executable graphing component configured to receive from the target environment the event data and configured to display a first representation of the event data over a monitoring period using the event data, and to display, together with the first representation, a second representation of the event data over a specified portion of the event data using the event data for the specified portion of the monitoring period, the first representation displayed in a first scale, the second representation displayed in a second scale, the second scale longer than the first scale.
