Abstract

A method and apparatus for selecting a favored transmission slot for communicating non-voice data in conjunction with a voice-data communication. The slot, reflecting a favored power level and transmission rate for transmitting the non-voice data on a supplemental channel, is selected based upon the transmission power levels for voice-data transmitted by a base station to a remote station on a fundamental channel. The favored transmission slot is selected without the remote station messaging information to the base station concerning frequency channel or interference information for the supplemental channel.

Claims

1. A method for scheduling transmissions in a wireless communication system, comprising:

determining a dynamic transmission power on a first transmission channel; and

scheduling transmissions on a second transmission channel as a function of the dynamic transmission power.

2. The method as in claim 1, wherein the first transmission channel is a fundamental channel used for voice transmissions;

and

wherein the second transmission channel is a supplementary channel used for data transmissions.

3. The method as in claim 1, wherein the wireless communication system is a spread-spectrum communication system supporting high data rate transmissions.

4. An apparatus for scheduling transmissions in a wireless communication system, comprising:

means for determining a dynamic transmission power on a first transmission channel; and

means for scheduling transmissions on a second transmission channel as a function of the dynamic transmission power.

5. The apparatus as in claim 4, wherein the slot is a favored slot for transmission of non-voice data.

6. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein the means for determining a dynamic transmission power comprises:

means for determining a transmission metric for transmissions on the first transmission channel.

7. The apparatus of claim 6, further comprising:

means for monitoring transmission levels of the first transmission channel; and

means for determining a dynamic value of the transmission levels of the first transmission channel.

8. The apparatus as in claim 7, further comprising:

means for selecting a favored slot for transmission of data on a second transmission channel in response to the dynamic value.

9. The apparatus of claim 4, further comprising:

means for monitoring transmission levels of the first transmission channel; and

means for determining a dynamic value of the transmission levels of the first transmission channel.

10. The apparatus as in claim 9, further comprising:

means for selecting a favored slot for transmission of data on a second transmission channel in response to the dynamic value.

11. The apparatus as in claim 10, further comprising:

means for determining if a data communication is complete.

12. The apparatus as in claim 4, wherein the first transmission channel is a fundamental channel.

13. The apparatus as in claim 12, wherein the second transmission channel is a supplemental channel.

14. An apparatus for transmitting data in a wireless communication system, the apparatus comprising:

means for transmitting signals from a base location via at least one first channel;

means for measuring at the base location transmission power levels for the voice-data transmitted via the at least one first channel;

means for determining a historical profile for the transmission power levels; and

means for using the historical profile for the transmission power levels to select a slot for transmitting additional data on a second channel.

15. The apparatus as in claim 14, wherein the first transmission channel is a fundamental channel.

16. The apparatus as in claim 15, wherein the second transmission channel is a supplemental channel.

17. The apparatus as in claim 15, wherein a first transmission on the fundamental channel is non-voice data.

18. The apparatus as in claim 15, wherein a first transmission on the fundamental channel is voice data and a second transmission on the supplemental channel is non-voice data.

19. The apparatus as in claim 18, wherein transmissions are spread-spectrum transmissions.
