Abstract

The object of the present invention is to provide a means of detection and evaluation of mixtures, based on the concept of global selectivity, with enhanced sensitivity and selectivity. A first embodiment refers to a sensor for the analysis of mixtures by global selectivity comprising at least two sensor units consisting of: (a) interdigitated electrodes or microelectrodes sheathed with at least one monolayer of an ultra-fine film of a membrane forming material possessing physicochemical affinity for the substances peculiar to the mixture to be analysed selected from the group consisting of complexing polymer conductors, complexing substances and combinations thereof and, optionally, (b) non-sheathed interdigitated electrodes or microelectrodes. Another embodiment concerns a sensory system comprising: (1) at least two sensor units generating electrical signals, consisting of: (a) interdigitated electrodes or microelectrodes sheathed with at least one monolayer of an ultra-fine film of a membrane forming material possessing physicochemical affinity for the substances peculiar to the mixture to be analysed selected from the group consisting of complexing polymer conductors, complexing substances and combinations thereof and, optionally, (b) non-sheathed interdigitated electrodes or microelectrodes; (2) means for receiving electrical signals, obtained by means of measurement of alternate current, emitted by the sensor units in contact with the material to be analysed and (3) means of processing the measurements for analysis of the response patterns of an array formed by the different sensor units. The sensor may be employed, amongst other uses, in the analysis of taste and for monitoring the quality of products intended for human consumption, especially beverages and foods in liquid form, and in the evaluation and detection of humic substances and other contaminants (organic or inorganic) in water from natural sources (rivers, lakes, ponds, etc.) with the purpose of monitoring the quality of the water and environmental conservation.

Claims

1. Sensor for the analysis of mixtures by global selectivity comprising at least two sensor units consisting of:

(a) interdigitated electrodes or microelectrodes coated with at least one monolayer of an ultra-fine film of a membrane forming material possessing physicochemical affinity for the substances peculiar to the mixture to be analysed, selected from the group consisting of complexing polymer conductor, complexing substances and combinations thereof and, optionally,

(b) non-coated interdigitated electrodes or microelectrodes.

2. Sensor according to claim 1 wherein the interdigitated electrodes or microelectrodes are of metal selected from the group consisting of gold, platinum, copper or aluminium.

3. Sensor according to claim 1 wherein the complexing polymer conductor is selected from the group consisting of organic polymers possessing poly-conjugated electron-π

systems.

4. Sensor according to claim 3 wherein the complexing polymer conductor is selected from the group consisting of polyaniline;

polypyrrol;

polyacetylene;

polydiacetylene;

polythiophene;

poly(3,4-ethylenedioxithiophene) (PEDOT);

polyisothionaphthalene;

poly-heteroarylenovinyline, in which the heteroarylene group may be thiophene, furane or pyrrol;

poly-p-phenylene, polyophthalocyanine and similars, as well their derivatives and their mixtures.

5. Sensor according to claim 1 wherein the ultrafine film is constituted of 1 to 20 monolayers, with each layer having a thickness varying from 5 to 500 Å

.

6. Sensor according to claim 5 wherein each monolayer has a thickness of around 20 Å

.

7. Sensor according to claim 5 wherein the ultra-fine film is constituted of around 10 monolayers.

8. Sensor according to claim 5 wherein the maximum thickness of the film is of 500 Å

.

9. Sensor according to claim 1 wherein the mixture to be analysed is a beverage or liquid food and the complexing substance is selected from the group consisting of lipid compounds, metallic complexes and enzymes.

10. Sensor according to claim 9 wherein the lipid compound is selected from the group consisting of stearic acid, caproic acid and caprylic acid.

11. Sensor according to claim 10 wherein the lipid compound is stearic acid.

12. Sensor according to claim 1 wherein the mixture to be analysed is water from a natural source and the complexing substance is selected from the group consisting of sulphonated lignin, complexing organic acids and complexes containing metallic ions, as well their mixtures.

13. Sensor according to claim 12 wherein the mixture to be analysed is water from a natural source containing humic substances and the complexing substance is selected from the group consisting of sulphonated lignin, complexing organic acids and their mixtures.

14. Sensor according to claim 13 wherein the complexing organic acid is selected from the group consisting of camphosulphonic acid and toluenesulphonic acid.

15. Sensor according to claim 12 wherein the metallic ion is selected from the group consisting of copper, iron and aluminium.

16. Taste sensor for the analysis of liquid systems by global selectivity comprising at least two sensor units consisting of:

(a) interdigitated electrodes or microelectrodes covered with at least one monolayer of an ultra-fine film of a complexing polymer conductor, optionally combined with at least one complexing substance;

(b) interdigitated electrodes or microelectrodes coated with at least one monolayer of an ultra-fine film of at least one complexing substance possessing physicochemical affinity for the substances that compose the flavour and, optionally

(c) interdigitated electrodes or microelectrodes.

17. Taste sensor according to claim 16 wherein the interdigitated electrodes or microelectrodes are of metal selected from the group consisting of gold, platinum, copper or aluminium.

18. Taste sensor according to claim 16 wherein the complexing polymer conductor is an organic polymer possessing poly-conjugated electron-π

systems selected from the group consisting of polyaniline;

polypyrrol;

polyacetylene;

polydiacetylene;

polythiophene;

poly(3,4-ethylenedioxithiophene) (PEDOT);

polyisothionaphthalene;

poly-heteroarylenevinyline, in which the heteroarylene group may be thiophene, furane or pyrrol;

poly-p-phenylene, polyophthalocyanine and similars, as well their derivatives and their mixtures.

19. Taste sensor according to claim 18 wherein the organic polymer is polyaniline and/or polypyrrol.

20. Taste sensor according to claim 16 wherein the complexing substance is a lipid compound selected from the group consisting of stearic acid, caproic acid and caprylic acid.

21. Taste sensor according to claim 20 wherein the lipid compound is stearic acid.

22. Taste sensor according to claim 16 comprising at least six sensor units.

23. Taste sensor according to claim 22 comprising six sensor units consisting of an interdigitated electrode or microelectrode, an interdigitated electrode or microelectrode coated in an ultra-fine film of complexing substance, two interdigitated electrodes or microelectrodes coated in an ultra-fine film of at least one complexing polymer conductor and two interdigitated electrodes or microelectrodes coated in an ultra-fine film of at least one complexing polymer conductor mixed with a complexing substance.

24. Taste sensor according to claim 16 wherein the ultra-fine film is constituted of 1 to 20 monolayers, with each layer having a thickness varying from 5 to 500 Å

.

25. Taste sensor according to claim 24 wherein each monolayer has a thickness of around 20 Å

26. Taste sensor according to claim 24 characterised by the fact that the ultra-fine film is constituted of around 10 monolayers.

27. Taste sensor according to claim 24 wherein the maximum thickness of the film is of 500 Å

30. Sensor for the detection of humic substances according to claim 16 wherein the complexing polymer conductor is an organic polymer possessing poly-conjugated electron-π

systems selected from the group consisting of polyaniline;

polypyrrol;

polyacetylene;

polydiacetylene;

polythiophene;

poly(3,4-ethylenedioxithiophene) (PEDOT);

polyisothionaphthalene;

poly-heteroarylenevinyline, in which the heteroarylene group may be thiophene, furane or pyrrol;

poly-p-phenylene, polyophthalocyanine and similars, as well their derivatives and their mixtures.

31. Sensor for the detection of humic substances according to claim 18 wherein that the organic polymer is polyaniline and/or poly(o-ethoxyaniline).

28. Sensor for the detection of humic substances for the analysis of liquid systems by global selectivity comprising at least two sensor units consisting of:

(a) interdigitated electrodes or microelectrodes, and

(b) interdigitated electrodes or microelectrodes covered with at least one monolayer of an ultra-fine film of a complexing polymer conductor, optionally combined with at least one complexing substance possessing high physicochemical affinity for the humic substances present in the material to be analysed.

32. Sensor for the detection of humic substances according to claim 28 wherein the complexing substance is selected from the group consisting of sulphonated lignin and complexing organic acids.

33. Sensor for the detection of humic substances according to claim 28 wherein the ultra-fine film is obtained by self-mounted alternate layers of polyanion and polycation.

34. Sensor for the detection of humic substances according to claim 33 wherein the polyanion is sulphonated lignin and the polycation is poly(o-ethoxyaniline).

35. Sensor for the detection of humic substances according to claim 28 comprising at least nine sensor units.

36. Sensor for the detection of humic substances according to claim 35 comprising nine sensor units consisting of an interdigitated electrode or microelectrode, three interdigitated electrodes or microelectrodes coated in an ultra-fine film of at least one complexing polymer conductor, four interdigitated electrodes or microelectrodes coated in an ultra-fine film of at least one complexing polymer conductor mixed with at least one complexing substance and an interdigitated electrode or microelectrode coated in an ultra-fine film of at least one complexing polymer conductor.

37. Sensor for the detection of humic substances according to claim 28 wherein the ultra-fine film is constituted of 1 to 20 monolayers, with each layer having a thickness varying from 5 to 500 Å

.

38. Sensor for the detection of humic substances according to claim 28 wherein each monolayer has a thickness of around 20 Å

39. Sensor for the detection of humic substances according to claim 28 wherein the ultra-fine film is constituted of around 10 layers.

40. Sensor for the detection of humic substances according to claim 28 wherein the maximum thickness of the film is of 500 Å

29. Sensor for the detection of humic substances according to 28 wherein the interdigitated electrodes or microelectrodes are of metal selected from the group consisting of gold, platinum, copper or aluminium.

41. Sensory system comprising:

(1) at least two sensor units generating electric signals, consisting of;

(a) interdigitated electrodes or microelectrodes coated with at least one monolayer of an ultra-fine film of a membrane forming material possessing a high physicochemical affinity for the substances peculiar to the mixture to be analysed, selected from the group consisting of complexing polymer conductors, complexing substances and combinations thereof and, optionally, (b) interdigitated electrodes or microelectrodes;

(2) means of receiving the electrical signal, obtained by means of measuring alternating current, emitted by the sensor units in contact with the material to be analysed and

(3) means of processing the measurements for the analysis of the response pattern of the array formed by the different sensor units.
