Abstract

A method estimates a refresh parameter for a system having a life cycle and an affect that the refresh parameter has on the system. By estimating a refresh parameter, such a method provides one with a refresh strategy for achieving a system implementation, such as the most cost-effective implementation. For example, one can determine the most cost-effective system configuration for a given refresh strategy. Or, for a given system configuration, one can determine the most cost-effective refresh strategy. Alternatively, one determine the most cost-effective combination of refresh strategy and configuration.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

estimating a refresh parameter for a system having a life cycle; and

estimating an affect that the refresh parameter has on the system.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein estimating the refresh parameter comprises estimating a generation of a part of the system that will be used to refresh the part.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein estimating the refresh parameter comprises estimating a cost of refreshing a part of the system.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein estimating the refresh parameter comprises estimating a rate at which to refresh a part of the system.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein estimating the refresh parameter comprises estimating a difference between a capacity of a generation of a part and a capacity of a subsequent generation that refreshes the part.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein estimating the refresh parameter comprises estimating a complexity of refreshing a part of the system.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein estimating the refresh parameter comprises estimating an importance of a part to be refreshed.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein estimating the affect comprises estimating a change in a capacity of the system caused by the refresh parameter.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein estimating the affect comprises estimating a potential change in a capacity of the system caused by the refresh parameter.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein estimating the affect comprises estimating a change in a bill of materials of the system.

11. A method, comprising:

calculating an importance of a part to a system that includes the part;

calculating a potential capacity of the system after refreshing the part based on the importance of the part and on a capacity of the part after refresh relative to the capacity of the part before refresh; and

calculating a cost of refreshing the system based on the potential capacity of the refreshed system and a price of the part before refresh.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein calculating the importance comprises calculating the importance equal to an initial cost of the element divided by an initial cost of the system.

13. The method of claim 11 wherein calculating the potential capacity comprises calculating the potential capacity equal to a product of the importance and the capacity of the part after refresh.

14. The method of claim 11 wherein calculating the cost of refreshing the system comprises calculating a portion of the cost equal to an initial cost of the element divided by the potential capacity of the refreshed system.

15. A method, comprising:

calculating an importance of a first group of first preceding generations of a part to a system that includes the first group; and

calculating a potential capacity of the system after the first group is refreshed with a refresh group of subsequent generations of the part based on the importance of the first group and a capacity of the subsequent generation of the part relative to a second preceding generation of the part; and

calculating a cost of refreshing the first group with the refresh group based on the potential capacity of the refreshed system and a cost of a second group of the second preceding generations of the part.

16. The method of claim 15 wherein calculating the cost of refreshing the first group comprises calculating the cost equal to the cost of the second group divided by the potential capacity of the refreshed system.

17. The method of claim 15 wherein calculating the cost of refreshing the first group comprises calculating the cost based on the cost of the second group and a potential capacity of the refreshed system if and only if the refresh group maintains or increases an actual capacity of the system with fewer refresh generations of the part than there are first preceding generations of the part in the first group.

18. The method of claim 15 wherein the first preceding generation of the part comprises the generation of the part immediately preceding the subsequent generation of the part used to refresh the system.

19. The method of claim 15 wherein the second preceding generation of the part comprises a generation of the part to be initially installed in the system.

20. The method of claim 15 wherein calculating the importance of the first group comprises calculating the importance equal to a cost of the first group divided by an initial acquisition cost of the system.

21. The method of claim 15 wherein calculating the potential capacity of the system comprises calculating a portion of the potential capacity of the system equal to a product of the importance and the capacity of the subsequent generation of the part.

22. The method of claim 15 wherein the first group includes a single first preceding generation of the part.

23. The method of claim 15 wherein the second group includes a single second preceding generation of the part.

24. The method of claim 15 wherein the refresh group includes a single subsequent preceding generation of the part.

25. A method, comprising:

mathematically combining a price of a part before refresh and a capacity of the part after refresh to generate a result; and

calculating as a function of the result an operation and support cost for a system incorporating the part.

26. The method of claim 25 wherein the capacity of the part after refresh is relative to a capacity of the part immediately before refresh.

27. The method of claim 25 wherein mathematically combining the price and capacity comprises generating the result equal to the price of the part before refresh divided by the capacity of the part after refresh.

28. The method of claim 25 wherein calculating the operation and support cost comprises calculating the operation and support cost as a function of a sum of the price of unrefreshed parts of the system and a quotient of the price of the part before refresh and the capacity of the part after refresh.

29. A method, comprising:

mathematically combining a price of a part before a first refresh and a capacity of the part after the first refresh to generate a first result;

calculating as a function of the result a first capacity-dependent operation and support cost during a first refresh period for a system incorporating the part;

calculating as a function of a pre-refresh price of all elements in the system a first capacity-independent operation and support cost for the system during the first refresh period; and

mathematically combining the first capacity-dependent and capacity-independent operation and support costs to generate a total operation and support cost for the system during the first refresh period.

30. The method of claim 29, further comprising calculating as a function of a post-first-refresh price of all parts in the system a total operation and support cost for the system during a non-refresh period subsequent to the first refresh period.

31. The method of claim 29, further comprising:

mathematically combining a price of the part before a second refresh and after the first refresh with a capacity of the part after the second refresh to generate a second result;

calculating as a function of the second result a second capacity-dependent operation and support cost during a second refresh period;

calculating as a function of a pre-second-refresh-post-first-refresh price of all parts in the system a second capacity-independent operation and support cost for the system during the second refresh period; and

mathematically combining the second capacity-dependent and capacity-independent operation and support costs to generate a total operation and support cost for the system during the second refresh period.

32. A computer-readable medium that stores software operable to cause a computer to:

estimate a refresh parameter for a system having a life cycle; and

estimate an affect that the refresh parameter has on the system.

33. The computer of claim 32 wherein the processor circuit is operable to execute the software program under control of a client that is remote from the computer.

34. The computer of claim 32 wherein the processor circuit is operable to execute the software program under control of a remote client that is operable to communicate with the processor circuit via a network.

35. A computer-readable medium that stores software operable to cause a computer to:

calculate an importance of a part to a system that includes the part;

calculate a potential capacity of the system after refreshing the part based on the importance of the part and on a capacity of the part after refresh relative to the capacity of the part before refresh; and

calculate a cost of refreshing the system based on the potential capacity of the refreshed system and a price of the part before refresh.

36. A computer, comprising:

a processor circuit operable to execute a software program that causes the processor circuit to;

calculate an importance of a part to a system that includes the part;

calculate a potential capacity of the system after refreshing the part based on the importance of the part and on a capacity of the part after refresh relative to the capacity of the part before refresh; and

calculate a cost of refreshing the system based on the potential capacity of the refreshed system and a cost of the part before refresh.

37. The computer of claim 36 wherein the processor circuit is operable to execute the software program under control of a remote client that is operable to communicate with the processor circuit via a network.

38. A computer-readable medium that stores software operable to cause a computer to:

mathematically combine a cost of a part before refresh and a capacity of the part after refresh to generate a result; and

calculate as a function of the result an operation and support cost for a system incorporating the part.

39. A computer, comprising:

a processor circuit operable to execute a software program that causes the processor circuit to;

mathematically combine a cost of a part before refresh and a capacity of the part after refresh to generate a result; and

calculate as a function of the result an operation and support cost for a system incorporating the part.

40. The computer of claim 39 wherein the processor circuit is operable to execute the software program under control of a remote client that is operable to communicate with the processor circuit via a network.
