Abstract

According to the present invention, there is provided a method, system and program storage device for displaying textual information associated with a defined hot video object in video data on a video display device, comprising: sampling a video object plane to determine whether the hot video object is in the video object plane for displaying the hot video object on the video display device; updating a location of the hot video object in the video object plane as the video object moves during display of the video data on the video display device; determining whether a pointing device is over the updated location of the video object; and displaying the textual information associated with the hot video object on the video display device for a predetermined period of time.

Claims

1. A method for displaying textual information associated with a defined hot video object in video data on a video display device, the method comprising:

(a) sampling a video object plane to determine whether the hot video object is in the video object plane for displaying the hot video object on the video display device;

(b) updating a location of the hot video object in the video object plane as the video object moves during display of the video data on the video display device;

(c) determining whether a pointing device is over the updated location of the video object; and

(d) displaying the textual information associated with the hot video object on the video display device for a predetermined period of time.

2. The method for displaying textual information according to claim 1, wherein the method further comprises a step of executing a timer to determine the predetermined period of time for displaying the textual information.

3. The method for displaying textual information according to claim 1, wherein the method further comprises a step of determining whether a button on the pointing device is depressed to determine the predetermined period of time for displaying the textual information.

4. The method for displaying textual information according to claim 1, wherein the method further comprises the steps of:

determining when the hot video object is no longer in the video object plane so as to not be displayed on the video display device; and

directing a non-displaying of the textual information associated with the hot video object on the video display device.

5. The method for displaying textual information according to claim 1, wherein the method further comprises a step of receiving the video data from one of digital versatile disk player, personal video recorder, set top box, satellite system receiver and modem.

6. The method for displaying textual information according to claim 1, wherein the method further comprises a step of decoding the video data to ascertain the hot video object and the textual information associated with the hot video object.

7. The method for displaying textual information according to claim 1, wherein the video data is MPEG-4 according to an ISO/IEC 14496 standard.

14. The system for displaying textual information according to claim 1, wherein the video data is MPEG-4 according to an ISO/IEC 14496 standard.

21. The program storage device for displaying textual information according to claim 1, wherein the video data is MPEG-4 according to an ISO/IEC 14496 standard.

8. A system for displaying textual information associated with a defined hot video object in video data, the system comprising:

a decoder for sampling a video object plane to determine whether the hot video object is in the video object plane for displaying the hot video object and for updating a location of the hot video object in the video object plane as the video object moves during display of the video data;

a processor for determining whether a pointing device is over the updated location of the video object; and

a video display device for displaying the textual information associated with the hot video object on the video display device for a predetermined period of time.

9. The system for displaying textual information according to claim 8, wherein the system further comprises a means for executing a timer to determine the predetermined period of time for displaying the textual information.

10. The system for displaying textual information according to claim 8, wherein the system further comprises a means for determining whether a button on the pointing device is depressed to determine the predetermined period of time for displaying the textual information.

11. The system for displaying textual information according to claim 8, wherein the system further comprises:

means for determining when the hot video object is no longer in the video object plane so as to not be displayed on the video display device; and

means for directing a non-displaying of the textual information associated with the hot video object on the video display device.

12. The system for displaying textual information according to claim 8, wherein the system further comprises means for receiving the video data from one of digital versatile disk player, personal video recorder, set top box, satellite system receiver and modem.

13. The system for displaying textual information according to claim 8, wherein the system further comprises means of decoding the video data to ascertain the hot video object and the textual information associated with the hot video object.

15. A program storage device readable by machine, tangibly embodying a program of instructions executable by the machine to perform a method for displaying textual information associated with a defined hot video object in video data on a video display device, the method comprising:

(a) sampling a video object plane to determine whether the hot video object is in the video object plane for displaying the hot video object on the video display device;

(b) updating a location of the hot video object in the video object plane as the video object moves during display of the video data on the video display device;

(c) determining whether a pointing device is over the updated location of the video object; and

(d) displaying the textual information associated with the hot video object on the video display device for a predetermined period of time.

16. The programs storage device for displaying textual information according to claim 15, wherein the method further comprises a step of executing a timer to determine the predetermined period of time for displaying the textual information.

17. The programs storage device for displaying textual information according to claim 15, wherein the method further comprises a step of determining whether a button on the pointing device is depressed to determine the predetermined period of time for displaying the textual information.

18. The programs storage device for displaying textual information according to claim 15, wherein the method further comprises the steps of:

determining when the hot video object is no longer in the video object plane so as to not be displayed on the video display device; and

directing a non-displaying of the textual information associated with the hot video object on the video display device.

19. The programs storage device for displaying textual information according to claim 15, wherein the method further comprises a step of receiving the video data from one of digital versatile disk player, personal video recorder, set top box, satellite system receiver and modem.

20. The program storage device for displaying textual information according to claim 15, wherein the method further comprises a step of decoding the video data to ascertain the hot video object and the textual information associated with the hot video object.
