Abstract

A wireless communication device (60) for receiving communicated content includes a receiver (125), a processor (140), a content memory (180), and a content management application (165). The receiver (125) receives a content message (260) from a wireless communication system (10). The content message (260) includes a document type (265), wherein the document type indicates that the content message (260) includes data relating to one or more communicated content portions (280). The content management application (165) processes the data relating to the one or more communicated content portions (280) and stores the data relating to the one or more communicated content portions (280) in the content memory (180).

Claims

1. A method for communicating content comprising:

transmitting a content message from a wireless communication system to at one or more of a plurality of wireless communication devices, wherein the content message comprises;

a document type, wherein the document type indicates that the content message includes data relating to one or more content portions,

a clear attribute, and

an information message;

receiving the content message by at least one wireless communication device, wherein the wireless communication device includes a content memory for storing one or more content portions; and

deleting the one or more content portions in response to receiving the content message when the clear attribute is set to “

yes”

.

2. The method of communicating content as recited in claim 1 wherein the information message comprises one or more communicated content portions, the method further comprising:

storing the one or more communicated content portions in the content memory after the deleting step.

3. The method of communicating content as recited in claim 1 further comprising:

receiving a second content message by the wireless communication device after the deleting step, wherein the second content message includes one or more communicated content portions; and

storing the one or more communicated content portions in the content memory.

4. The method of communicating content as recited in claim 1 wherein the information message comprises a portal element including a portal URL, the method further comprising:

storing the portal URL in a memory of the wireless communication device;

accessing the portal URL through a browser application on the wireless communication device in response to an input from a user interface; and

updating one or more preferences for content receipt through the browser application in response to another input from the user interface of the wireless communication device at the portal URL.

5. The method of communicating content as recited in claim 1 wherein the information message comprises one or more communicated content portions, the method further comprising:

processing the one or more communicated content portions by a content management application of the wireless communication device after the receiving step; and

storing the one or more communicated content portions in the content memory of the wireless communication device.

6. The method of communicating content as recited in claim 5, further comprising:

displaying the one or more communicated content portions stored in the content memory on a display of the wireless communication device.

7. The method of communicating content as recited in claim 6, wherein the one or more communicated content portions includes a color element, and further wherein the processing step comprises:

setting a background color and a text color of a text area to be used for displaying the one or more communicated content portions on the display.

8. The method of communicating content as recited in claim 6, wherein the one or more communicated content portions includes an expiration element having an expiration time, and further wherein the processing step comprises:

comparing a current time to the expiration time, and

discarding the one or more communicated content portions when the current time is at least equal to the expiration time.

9. The method of communicating content as recited in claim 8 wherein the processing step further comprises:

storing the expiration time in the content memory within the one or more communicated content portions when the current time is less than the expiration time, and

deleting the one or more communicated content portion from the content memory when the current time is at least equal to the expiration time.

10. The method of communicating content as recited in claim 6, wherein the one or more communicated content portions includes an image element having a specified URL, wherein the processing step comprises:

retrieving the image from the specified URL,

storing the image within the one or more communicated content portions of the content memory.

11. The method of communicating content as recited in claim 6, wherein the one or more communicated content portions includes a text element comprising a test description of the content, wherein the processing step comprises:

storing the text description of the content within the one or more communicated content portions within the content memory.

12. The method of communicating content as recited in claim 6, wherein the one or more communicated content portions includes a URL attribute comprising the URL of the content associated with the communicated content portion, wherein the processing step comprises:

storing the URL within the communicated content portion in the content memory, and

retrieving the content associated with the communicated content portion through a browser application using the URL in response to an input from a user interface.

13. The method of communicating content as recited in claim 6, wherein the one or more communicated content portions includes a time attribute comprising the time for the communicated content portion, wherein the processing step comprises:

storing the time attribute within the one or more communicated content portions within the content memory.

14. The method of communicating content as recited in claim 6, wherein the one or more communicated content portions includes a title attribute comprising the title text for the communicated content portion, wherein the processing step comprises:

storing the title attribute within the one or more communicated content portions within the content memory.

15. A wireless communication device for receiving communicated content, the wireless communication device comprising:

a receiver for receiving a content message from a wireless communication system, wherein the content message comprises;

a document type, wherein the document type indicates that the content message includes data relating to one or more content portions,

a clear attribute, and

an information message;

a processor coupled to the receiver for processing the content message;

a content memory coupled to the processor for storing one or more content portions; and

a content management application coupled to the processor and coupled to the content memory, wherein the content management application is programmed to delete the one or more content portions in response to receiving the content message when the clear attribute is set to “

yes”

.

The wireless communication device as recited in claim 15 wherein the content management application is further programmed to store one or more communicated content portions contained within the information message in the content memory after deleting the one or more content portions from the content memory.

17. The wireless communication device as recited in claim 15 wherein the content management application is further programmed to store in the content memory one or more communicated content portions contained within a second received content message.

18. The wireless communication device as recited in claim 15 further comprising:

a memory coupled to the processor for storing a portal URL contained within the information message of the received content message;

a browser application coupled to the processor for accessing the portal URL in response to an input from a user interface; and

the user interface coupled to the processor for providing the input for accessing the portal URL and further for providing another input for updating one or more preferences for content receipt through the browser application at the portal URL.

19. The wireless communication device as recited in claim 15, wherein the content management application is further programmed to process one or more communicated content portions contained within the information message of the received content message and to store the one or more communicated content portions in the content memory.

20. The wireless communication device as recited in claim 19 further comprising:

a display coupled to the processor for displaying the one or more communicated content portions stored in the content memory.

The wireless communication device as recited in claim 20, wherein the one or more communicated content portions includes a color element, and further wherein the content management application is further programmed to set a background color and a text color of a text area contained within the color element to be used for displaying the one or more communicated content portions on the display.

The wireless communication device as recited in claim 20, wherein the one or more communicated content portions includes an expiration element having an expiration time, and further wherein the content management application is further programmed to comparing a current time to the expiration time, and to discard the one or more communicated content portions when the current time is at least equal to the expiration time.

The wireless communication device as recited in claim 22 wherein the content management application is further programmed to store the expiration time in the content memory within the one or more communicated content portions when the current time is less than the expiration time, and to delete the one or more communicated content portion from the content memory when the current time is at least equal to the expiration time.

24. The wireless communication device as recited in claim 20, wherein the one or more communicated content portions includes an image element having a specified URL, and further wherein the content management application is further programmed to retrieve the image from the specified URL, and to store the image within the one or more communicated content portions of the content memory.

25. The wireless communication device as recited in claim 20, wherein the one or more communicated content portions includes a text element comprising a test description of the content, and further wherein the content management application is further programmed to store the text description of the content within the one or more communicated content portions within the content memory.

26. The wireless communication device as recited in claim 20, wherein the one or more communicated content portions includes a URL attribute comprising the URL of the content associated with the communicated content portion, wherein the content management application is further programmed to store the URL with the communicated content portion in the content memory, the wireless communication device further comprising:

a browser application coupled to the processor for retrieving the content associated with the communicated content portion using the URL in response to an input from a user interface; and

the user interface coupled to the processor for providing the input.

The wireless communication device as recited in claim 20, wherein the one or more communicated content portions includes a time attribute comprising the time for the communicated content portion, and further wherein the content management application is programmed to store the time attribute within the one or more communicated content portions within the content memory.

28. The wireless communication device as recited in claim 20, wherein the one or more communicated content portions includes a title attribute comprising the title text for the communicated content portion, and further wherein the content management application is further programmed to store the title attribute within the one or more communicated content portions within the content memory.
