Abstract

Apparatus for delivering a media to an anatomic void within a bone structure and compacting the media within the anatomic void includes a delivery device and a compaction device. The delivery device includes a tubular element, a guidewire, and a removal element. The removal element is capable of forming a void at a target site within the bone structure by cutting and/or deforming target bone tissue. A distal end of the guidewire may be detachable as a safety feature. The compaction device includes an elongate member and a vibration device connected to the proximal end of the elongate member. The vibration device creates vibration at the distal end of the elongate member, so that the media is mixed and/or compacted within the anatomic void.

Claims

1. An apparatus for compacting a media within an anatomic void, comprising:

a elongate member having a proximal end and a distal end, the distal end adapted to be positioned within an anatomic void; and

a vibration device connected to the proximal end of the elongate member.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the distal end of the elongate member has a non-linear configuration.

3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the vibration device comprises a motor.

4. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein the motor is an electric motor.

5. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein the motor is a piezoelectric motor.

6. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein the motor is an electromagnetic motor.

7. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein the motor is an inert gas motor.

8. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a power source coupled to the vibration device.

9. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a handle coupled to the vibration device.

10. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the handle comprises a marker for indicating an orientation of the elongate member.

11. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the elongate member is made of a radiopaque material.

12. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising an operative element carried on the distal end of the elongate member.

13. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the operative element comprises an electrode for determining the position and orientation of the distal end of the elongate member.

14. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the operative element comprises an electrode for ablation of a tissue.

15. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising an outer tubular element having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen extending between the proximal end and the distal end, the outer tubular element adapted for coaxially surrounding the distal end of the elongate member.

16. The apparatus of claim 15, wherein the outer tubular element is configured for delivering a media to the anatomic void.

17. The apparatus of claim 15, wherein the outer tubular element is configured for delivering a media to a biomaterial containment device.

18. The apparatus of claim 15, further comprising an inner tubular element configured for delivery of a media to the anatomic void, the inner tubular element coaxially positioned within the lumen of the outer tubular element.

19. The apparatus of claim 15, wherein the distal end of the elongate member is configured to assume a first profile when the distal end is constrained inside the tubular element, and a second profile when the distal end is unconstrained outside the tubular element.

20. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a removal element coupled to the distal end of the elongate member, the removal element configured for creating an anatomic void within a bone structure.

21. The apparatus of claim 20, wherein the removal element comprises a drill bead.

22. The apparatus of claim 20, wherein the removal element comprises an expandable structure.

23. The apparatus of claim 20, wherein the removal element comprises a lesion generator.

24. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a sensor carried on the distal end of the elongate member, wherein the sensor is capable of measuring a characteristic of the media.

25. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the distal end of the elongate member is detachable from a proximal portion of the elongate member.

26. The apparatus of claim 25, wherein the distal end of the elongate member is detachably connected to the proximal portion of the elongate member by a sacrificial link that may be severed by electrolytic activity.

27. The apparatus of claim 25, wherein the distal end of the elongate member is detachably connected to the proximal portion of the elongate member by a screw-thread.

28. The apparatus of claim 25, wherein a portion of the distal end of the elongate member is removed to create a weak link joining the distal end of the elongate member to a remainder of the elongate member.

29. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the elongate member is a guidewire.

30. An apparatus for delivering a media to a target site within a bone structure, comprising:

a tubular element having a distal end adapted for cutting into a bone structure, the tubular element having a lumen;

a guidewire having a distal end configured to be slide in and out of the tubular element lumen; and

a steerable element carried on the distal end of the guidewire, the steerable element configured for creating an anatomic void at a target site within the bone structure.

31. A method for delivering a media to a target site within a bone structure, comprising:

providing a delivery apparatus comprising a tubular element and a guidewire, the tubular element having a lumen, the guidewire having a distal end configured to be slide in and out of the tubular element lumen;

advancing the tubular element into a bone structure such that a channel leading to the target site is created in the bone structure by the tubular element;

advancing the distal end of the guidewire through the lumen of the tubular element to the target site;

advancing the distal end of the guidewire to disrupt a bone tissue at the target site, thereby creating a void at the target site;

introducing a media through the lumen of the tubular element and into the void; and

vibrating the distal end of the guidewire for compaction of the media in the void.

32. The method of claim 31, further comprising navigating the distal end of the guidewire through the target site by rotating a proximal end of the guidewire.

33. The method of claim 31, further comprising navigating the distal end of the guidewire through the target site by axially controlling a proximal end of the guidewire.

34. The method of claim 31, wherein the vibrating comprises tapping a proximal end of the guidewire.

35. The method of claim 31, wherein the vibrating comprises activating a vibration device connected to a proximal end of the guidewire.

36. The method of claim 31, wherein the delivery apparatus further comprising a drill bead carried on the distal end of the guidewire, and advancing the distal end of the guidewire to disrupt bone tissue at the target site comprising rotating the drill bead about the guidewire to disrupt bone tissue at the target site, thereby creating the void at the target site.

37. The method of claim 36, further comprising navigating the drill bead through the target site by turning a proximal end of the guidewire.

38. The method of claim 36, further comprising navigating the drill bead through the target site by axially controlling a proximal end of the guidewire.

39. The method of claim 36, wherein the vibrating comprises tapping a proximal end of the guidewire.

40. The method of claim 36, wherein the vibrating comprises activating a vibration device connected to a proximal end of the guidewire.

41. A method for compacting a media located in an anatomic void comprising:

providing an apparatus comprising an elongate member and a vibration device coupled to a proximal end of the elongate member;

positioning a distal end of the elongate member to contact the media; and

activating the vibration device.

42. A method for delivering a media to a target site within a bone structure, comprising:

boring into the bone structure to create a channel leading to a target site within the bone structure;

creating a void at the target site of the bone structure;

delivering a media through the channel to the void; and

compacting the media.

43. The method of claim 42, the boring comprising advancing a tubular element into the bone structure until a distal end of the tubular element reaches the target site.

44. The method of claim 42, the creating comprising disrupting bone tissue at the target site with a distal end of a guidewire.

45. The method of claim 44, the disrupting comprising cutting bone tissue at the target site.

46. The method of claim 44, the disrupting comprising compressing bone tissue at the target site.

47. The method of claim 44, the disrupting comprising rotating a drill bead carried on the guidewire distal end.

48. The method of claim 42, the creating comprising:

positioning an expandable structure adapted for cutting bone tissue in contact with the target site;

expanding the expandable structure; and

rotating the expandable structure.

49. The method of claim 42, the creating comprising removing bone tissue at the target site using pressurized gas.

50. The method of claim 42, the compacting comprising:

advancing a distal end of an elongate member into the channel until the distal end contacts the media; and

vibrating the distal end of the elongate member.

51. The method of claim 50, the vibrating comprising manually tapping a proximal end of the elongate member.

52. The method of claim 50, the vibrating comprising activating a vibration device connected to a proximal end of the elongate member.

53. A method of compacting a media within an anatomic void, the method comprising:

positioning a distal end of an elongate member such that the distal end is in contact with the media; and

vibrating the distal end of the elongate member.

54. The method as in claim 53, wherein the vibrating comprises tapping a proximal end of the elongate member.

55. The method as in claim 53, wherein the vibrating comprises activating a vibration device connected to the proximal end of the elongate member.
