Abstract

The present invention relates to a method and system for modifying at least one connection parameter of a circuit switched terminal device, wherein the at least one connection parameter can be modified at a called terminal by a corresponding input operation after the receipt of a setup signaling message. The connection parameter is incorporated in an answer signaling message to be transmitted in response to the setup message, and compared with a negotiated connection parameter. Based on the comparison result, a parameter modification is initiated. Thereby, a discreet and fast slip from an offered to a wanted service can be offered at little message traffic.

Claims

1. A method for modifying at least one connection parameter for a connection in which at least one terminal device (11, 16) is arranged in a circuit switched network, said at least one connection parameter defining at least one type of information stream supported by said called terminal (2, 11, 16), said method comprising the steps of:

a) providing an input function for enabling a change of said at least one connection parameter after a setup message has been received from a calling terminal;

b) incorporating said at least one connection parameter into an answer message transmitted to said calling terminal in response to said setup message;

c) comparing said at least one modified connection parameter with at least one negotiated connection parameter; and

d) initiating a modification of said at least one connection parameter based on the comparison result of the comparing means.

2. A method according to claim 1, wherein said modification step comprises invoking an in-call modification.

3. A method according to claim 1 or 2, wherein said called terminal is a multimedia terminal.

4. A method according to claim 3, wherein said multimedia terminal is a H.324 compliant terminal.

5. A method according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein said connection parameter defines a multimedia bearer service.

6. A method according to claim 5, wherein said multimedia bearer service corresponds to a video service a multimedia service, or a speech service.

7. A method according to any one of claims 2 to 6, wherein said in-call modification is invoked by a BICC signaling.

8. A method according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein said answer message is an ISUP ANM message or a Q.931 CONNECT message.

9. A method according to claim 8, wherein said connection parameter comprises a BC, LLC and/or HLC information element.

10. A method according to any one of claims 1 to 8, wherein said answer message is an SIP 200 OK message, and said connection parameter is an SDP parameter of said SIP 200 OK message.

11. A method according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein said setup message is an ISUP IAM message or an SIP INVITE message.

12. A method according to any one of claims 2 to 11, wherein said comparing and invoking steps are performed in said calling terminal or in a network element (9) through which said answer message is routed.

13. A method according to claims 12, wherein said network element comprises a media gateway control function (9).

14. A circuit switched terminal device having a service modification function for modifying a connection parameter, said connection parameter defining a type of information stream supported by said terminal device (2, 11, 16), said terminal device comprising:

a) input means (20, 110, 160) for enabling a change of said connection parameter after a setup message has been received from a calling terminal;

b) setting means (115) for incorporating said connection parameter into an answer message; and

c) transmitting means (111) for transmitting said answer message to said calling terminal in response to said setup message.

15. A terminal device according to claim 14, wherein said setup message is an ISUP IAM message or an SIP INVITE message, and said answer message is an ISUP ANM message or an SIP 200 OK message.

16. A terminal device according to claim 15, wherein said connection parameter is an SDP parameter incorporated in said SIP 200 OK message, or a BC, LLC and/or HLC parameter incorporated in said ISUP ANM message.

17. A circuit switched terminal device comprising:

a) transmitting means (111) for transmitting a setup message to a called terminal;

b) receiving means (111) for receiving an answer message from said called terminal;

c) detecting means (112) for detecting a connection parameter incorporated in said answer message transmitted to said terminal (11);

d) comparing means (115) for comparing said detected connection parameter with a negotiated connection parameter which has been negotiated in a setup negotiation; and

e) call control means (112) for initiating a modification of said connection parameter based on the comparison result of the comparing means (115).

18. A terminal device according to claim 17, wherein said call control means is arranged to invoke an in-call modification.

19. A terminal device according to claim 17 or 18, wherein said setup message is an ISUP IAM message or an SIP INVITE message, and said answer message is an ISUP ANM message or an SIP 200 OK message.

20. A terminal device according to claim 19, wherein said connection parameter is an SDP parameter incorporated in said SIP 200 OK message, or a BC, LLC and/or HLC parameter incorporated in said ISUP ANM message.

21. A terminal device according to any one of claims 17 to 20, wherein said terminal device is a H.324 compliant terminal device (11, 16).

22. A terminal device according to any one of claims 18 to 21, wherein said call control means (112) is compliant with the H.245 control protocol, and said in-call modification is invoked by a BICC signaling.

23. A terminal device according to any one of claims 18 to 22, wherein a preferred composition of information processing means can be configured by the user of the terminal.

24. A terminal device according to claim 23, wherein the user is provided with graphical symbols representing the choices concerning the media types for answering the call.

25. A network element for establishing a circuit-switched connection to a terminal device (11), said network element (9) comprising:

a) detecting means (91) for detecting a connection parameter incorporated in an answer message transmitted to said terminal device (11);

b) comparing means (92) for comparing said detected connection parameter with a negotiated connection parameter which has been negotiated in a setup negotiation; and

c) signaling means (91) for initiating a modification of said connection parameter based on the comparison result of the comparing means (92).

26. A network element according to claim 25, wherein said signaling means (91) is arranged to invoke an in-call modification.

27. A network element according to claim 25 or 26, wherein said network element comprises a media gateway control function (9), and said answer message is an ISUP ANM message or an SIP 200 OK message.

28. A network element according to claim 27, wherein said connection parameter is an SDP parameter incorporated in said SIP 200 OK message, or a BC, LLC and/or HLC parameter incorporated in said ISUP ANM message.

29. A network element according to any one of claims 25 to 28, wherein said in-call modification is invoked by a BICC signaling.
