Abstract

The invention provides a recording/reproduction apparatus capable of executing accurate and efficient control based on copyright information in operations to record and reproduce contents onto and from a recording medium. Copyright information for the contents includes information on an input source of the contents. The information on an input source is also stored in the recording medium along with the contents. When the contents are reproduced from the recording medium, the information on an input source is acquired and used as a basis for determining whether the contents can be reproduced and output. Thus, it is possible to impose a variety of accurate output restrictions on an operation to reproduce the contents in accordance with the input source. In addition, a key required for generating a MAC (message authentication code) of the copyright information is transmitted to a device along with an enabling key block (EKB) in accordance with a key distribution system based on a tree structure. Thus, only a device having a proper license is capable of carrying out an authentication process using the MAC, making it possible to implement a valid configuration for utilizing the contents.

Claims

1. An information-recording apparatus for carrying out a process to record contents onto a recording medium,

wherein copyright information including information on an input source of said contents to be recorded on said recording medium is generated, and a process to record said copyright information onto said recording medium for recording said contents is carried out.

2. An information-recording apparatus according to claim 1,

wherein data for checking falsification of said copyright information including information on an input source is generated and recorded onto said recording medium along with said copyright information.

3. An information-recording apparatus according to claim 1,

wherein said information on an input source includes information indicating whether or not said input contents contain copy control information and have been input from an IEEE-1394 interface.

4. An information-recording apparatus according to claim 1,

wherein said information on an input source includes information indicating that said input contents are digital data or analog data.

5. An information-recording apparatus according to claim 1,

wherein said information on an input source includes information indicating whether or not said input contents contain copy control information and, if said information on an input source includes information indicating that said input contents contain copy control information, said information on an input source includes information indicating whether said copy control information is added to each TS packet of digital data of said contents or added as a digital watermark.

6. An information-recording apparatus according to claim 1, wherein:

node keys unique to nodes of a hierarchical tree structure having leaves corresponding to a plurality of different information-recording apparatus and leaf keys unique to said plurality of information-recording apparatus are stored; and

an enabling key block (EKB) containing a node key encrypted by using keys including at least a node key on a subordinate hierarchical layer or a leaf key is subjected to a decryption process, and data for checking falsification of said copyright information including information on an input source is generated by using a key obtainable from said decryption process and recorded onto said recording medium along with said copyright information.

7. An information-recording apparatus according to claim 1, wherein:

node keys unique to nodes of a hierarchical tree structure having leaves corresponding to a plurality of different information-recording apparatus and leaf keys unique to said plurality of information-recording apparatus are stored;

an enabling key block (EKB) containing a node key encrypted by using keys including at least a node key on a subordinate hierarchical layer or a leaf key is subjected to a decryption process, and data for checking falsification of said copyright information including information on an input source is generated by using a key obtainable from said decryption process and recorded onto said recording medium along with said copyright information; and

said enabling key block (EKB) is subjected to a decryption process, and said contents to be recorded onto said recording medium are encrypted by using a key obtained by applying a key obtainable from said decryption process prior to said process to record said contents onto said recording medium.

8. An information reproduction apparatus for carrying out a process to reproduce contents from a recording medium,

wherein copyright information including information on an input source of said contents to be reproduced from said recording medium used for storing said contents to be reproduced is read out from said recording medium and reproduction control based on an output restriction according to said information on an input source of said contents to be reproduced is executed.

9. An information reproduction apparatus according to claim 8,

wherein data for checking falsification of said copyright information including information on an input source is generated from said copyright information read out from said recording medium used for storing said contents to be reproduced and is compared with a falsification check value already recorded on said recording medium in order to form a judgment as to whether or not said copyright information has been falsified, and the process to reproduce said contents is carried out on condition that a result of said judgment reveals that said copyright information has not been falsified.

10. An information reproduction apparatus according to claim 8,

wherein said information on an input source includes information indicating whether or not said input contents contain copy control information and have been input from an IEEE-1394 interface.

11. An information reproduction apparatus according to claim 8,

wherein said information on an input source includes information indicating that said input contents are digital data or analog data.

12. An information reproduction apparatus according to claim 8,

wherein said information on an input source includes information indicating whether or not said input contents contain copy control information and, if said information on an input source includes information indicating that said input contents contain copy control information, said information on an input source includes information indicating whether said copy control information is added to each TS packet of digital data of said contents or added as a digital watermark.

13. An information reproduction apparatus according to claim 8, wherein:

node keys unique to nodes of a hierarchical tree structure having leaves corresponding to a plurality of different information reproduction apparatus and leaf keys unique to said plurality of information reproduction apparatus are stored; and

an enabling key block (EKB) containing a node key encrypted by using keys including at least a node key on a subordinate hierarchical layer or a leaf key is subjected to a decryption process, and data for checking falsification of said copyright information including information on an input source is generated by using a key obtainable from said decryption process to be used for checking falsification of said copyright information.

14. An information reproduction apparatus according to claim 8, wherein:

node keys unique to nodes of a hierarchical tree structure having leaves corresponding to a plurality of different information reproduction apparatus and leaf keys unique to said plurality of information reproduction apparatus are stored;

an enabling key block (EKB) containing a node key encrypted by using keys including at least a node key on a subordinate hierarchical layer or a leaf key is subjected to a decryption process, and data for checking falsification of said copyright information including information on an input source is generated by using a key obtainable from said decryption process to be used for checking falsification of said copyright information; and

said enabling key block (EKB) is subjected to a decryption process, and said process to reproduce said contents from said recording medium is carried out by decrypting said reproduced contents by using a key obtained by applying a key obtainable from said decryption process.

15. An information-recording method for carrying out a process to record contents onto a recording medium, comprising the steps of:

generating copyright information including information on an input source of said contents to be recorded on said recording medium; and

recording said copyright information onto said recording medium for recording said contents.

16. An information-recording method according to claim 15, further comprising the steps of:

generating data for checking falsification of said copyright information including information on an input source; and

recording said data for checking falsification of said copyright information including information on an input source onto said recording medium along with said copyright information.

17. An information-recording method according to claim 15,

wherein said information on an input source includes information indicating whether or not said input contents contain copy control information and have been input from an IEEE-1394 interface.

18. An information-recording method according to claim 15,

wherein said information on an input source includes information indicating that said input contents are digital data or analog data.

19. An information-recording method according to claim 15,

wherein said information on an input source includes information indicating whether or not said input contents contain copy control information and, if said information on an input source includes information indicating that said input contents contain copy control information, said information on an input source includes information indicating whether said copy control information is added to each TS packet of digital data of said contents or added as a digital watermark.

20. An information-recording method according to claim 15, wherein an information-recording apparatus, for executing said information-recording method, stores node keys unique to nodes of a hierarchical tree structure having leaves corresponding to a plurality of different information-recording apparatus and leaf keys unique to said plurality of information-recording apparatus, said information-recording method further comprising the steps of:

subjecting an enabling key block (EKB) containing a node key encrypted by using keys including at least a node key on a subordinate hierarchical layer or a leaf key to a decryption process; and

generating data for checking falsification of said copyright information including information on an input source by using a key obtainable from said decryption process and recording said data onto said recording medium along with said copyright information.

21. An information-recording method according to claim 15, wherein an information-recording apparatus, for executing said information-recording method, stores node keys unique to nodes of a hierarchical tree structure having leaves corresponding to a plurality of different information-recording apparatus and leaf keys unique to said plurality of information-recording apparatus, said information-recording method further comprising the steps of:

subjecting an enabling key block (EKB) containing a node key encrypted by using keys including at least a node key on a subordinate hierarchical layer or a leaf key to a decryption process;

generating data for checking falsification of said copyright information including information on an input source by using a key obtainable from said decryption process and recording said data onto said recording medium along with said copyright information; and

subjecting said enabling key block (EKB) to a decryption process, and encrypting said contents to be recorded onto said recording medium by using a key obtained by applying a key obtainable from said decryption process prior to said process to record said contents onto said recording medium.

22. An information reproduction method for carrying out a process to reproduce contents from a recording medium, comprising the steps of:

reading out copyright information including information on an input source of said contents to be reproduced from said recording medium used for storing said contents; and

executing reproduction control based on an output restriction according to said information on an input source of said contents to be reproduced from said recording medium.

23. An information reproduction method according to claim 22, further comprising the steps of:

generating data for checking falsification of said copyright information including information on an input source from said copyright information read out from said recording medium used for storing said contents to be reproduced; and

comparing said data for checking falsification of said copyright information including information on an input source with a falsification check value already recorded on said recording medium in order to form a judgment as to whether or not said copyright information has been falsified, and carrying out said process to reproduce said contents on condition that a result of said judgment reveals that said copyright information has not been falsified.

24. An information reproduction method according to claim 22,

wherein said information on an input source includes information indicating whether or not said input contents contain copy control information and have been input from an IEEE-1394 interface.

25. An information reproduction method according to claim 22,

wherein said information on an input source includes information indicating that said input contents are digital data or analog data.

26. An information reproduction method according to claim 22,

wherein said information on an input source includes information indicating whether or not said input contents contain copy control information and, if said information on an input source includes information indicating that said input contents contain copy control information, said information on an input source includes information indicating whether said copy control information is added to each TS packet of digital data of said contents or added as a digital watermark.

27. An information reproduction method according to claim 22,

wherein an information reproduction apparatus, for executing said information reproduction method, stores node keys unique to nodes of a hierarchical tree structure having leaves corresponding to a plurality of different information reproduction apparatus and leaf keys unique to said plurality of information reproduction apparatus, said information reproduction method further comprising the steps of:

subjecting an enabling key block (EKB) containing a node key encrypted by using keys including at least a node key on a subordinate hierarchical layer or a leaf key to a decryption process; and

generating data for checking falsification of said copyright information including information on an input source by using a key obtainable from said decryption process to be used for checking falsification of said copyright information.

28. An information reproduction method according to claim 22, wherein an information reproduction apparatus, for executing said information reproduction method, stores node keys unique to nodes of a hierarchical tree structure having leaves corresponding to a plurality of different information reproduction apparatus and leaf keys unique to said plurality of information reproduction apparatus, said information reproduction method further comprising the steps of:

subjecting an enabling key block (EKB) containing a node key encrypted by using keys including at least a node key on a subordinate hierarchical layer or a leaf key to a decryption process;

generating data for checking falsification of said copyright information including information on an input source by using a key obtainable from said decryption process to be used for checking falsification of said copyright information; and

subjecting said enabling key block (EKB) to-a decryption process, and carrying out said process to reproduce said contents from said recording medium by decrypting said reproduced contents by using a key obtained by applying a key obtainable from said decryption process.

29. A computer program to be executed by a computer system for carrying out a process to record contents onto a recording medium, comprising the steps of:
