Abstract

A media recommendation system gathers negative user feedback associated with media content. Based on the gathered feedback, the media recommendation system extracts a list of recommended media content from program data describing available media content.

Claims

1. A method for recommending media content comprising:

receiving an indication of a lack of user interest in a particular media content; and

recommending a plurality of media content, such that the particular media content is not recommended.

2. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein the indication of a lack of user interest comprises a user request to tune to a different channel.

3. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein the recommending a plurality of media content comprises:

filtering a list of identifiers associated with available media content to remove an identifier associated with the particular media content; and

making the list of identifiers available to a user.

4. A method for gathering negative user feedback comprising:

tuning to a particular media content through a media channel;

receiving an indication of a user request to not tune to the particular media content; and

associating an indication of negative feedback with at least one attribute of the particular media content.

5. The method as recited in claim 4 wherein the media channel comprises one of a broadcast channel, a television channel, a radio channel, and a virtual channel associated with stored media content.

6. The method as recited in claim 4 wherein the particular media content comprises one of a broadcast television program, a video-on-demand program, a previously recorded program, a song, and a news program segment.

7. The method as recited in claim 4 wherein the indication of a user request to not tune to the particular media content comprises a user request to tune from the media channel to a different media channel.

8. The method as recited in claim 4 wherein the attribute of the particular media content comprises at least one of a representation of the media channel, a rating, a release year, a program description, closed caption data, a title, a rerun indicator, a genre, an actor, an artist, an album, a broadcast time, and a viewing time.

9. A method for serving media content recommendations to a client, the method comprising:

receiving a representation of negative user feedback associated with media content;

filtering a list of available media content to remove from the list media content associated with the negative user feedback; and

serving the list of media content that is filtered to a client device for presentation to a user.

10. A method for generating media content recommendations, the method comprising:

receiving from a user, negative feedback associated with media content;

associating an indication of negative feedback with at least one attribute of the media content; and

using the indication of negative feedback to filter a list of available media content such that media content in which the user is not interested is removed from the list.

11. The method as recited in claim 10 wherein the negative feedback comprises a user selection to tune away from a particular media content.

12. The method as recited in claim 10 wherein the receiving comprises receiving negative feedback submitted through a user interface.

13. The method as recited in claim 10 wherein the media content comprises at least one of a broadcast television program, a purchased video-on-demand, a movie, a song, and a television program segment.

14. The method as recited in claim 10 wherein the attribute of the media content comprises at least one of a channel, a rating, a release year, a program description, closed caption data, a title, a rerun indicator, a genre, an actor, an artist, an album, a broadcast time, and a viewing time, and a listening time.

15. A method comprising:

delivering a musical selection to a user;

receiving negative feedback from the user; and

associating an indication of the negative feedback with at least one attribute of the musical selection.

16. The method as recited in claim 15, further comprising:

comparing attributes of available musical selections to the at least one attribute associated with the indication of the negative feedback to generate musical recommendations, such that musical selections that the user is not interested in are not recommended.

17. The method as recited in claim 15 wherein the musical selection comprises at least one of a song and an album.

18. The method as recited in claim 15 wherein the attribute of the musical selection comprises at least one of a song title, an album title, an artist name, a recording date, and a musical genre.

19. A media recommendation system comprising:

means for gathering negative user feedback associated with media content; and

means for recommending media content based on the negative user feedback.

20. The media recommendation system as recited in claim 19 further comprising means for receiving media content.

21. A computer system comprising:

a media distribution interface configured to receive media content from a media distribution system; and

a data processor configured to gather negative user feedback associated with the media content.

22. The computer system as recited in claim 21, wherein the media distribution interface is further configured to:

transmit a representation of the negative user feedback to the media distribution system; and

receive media recommendations from the media distribution system.

23. The computer system as recited in claim 21, wherein the data processor is further configured to:

generate media content recommendations based on the negative user feedback such that media content that is not of interest to a user is not recommended.

24. A computer system as recited in claim 21, implemented as a television set-top box.

25. A computer system comprising:

a client interface configured to receive a representation of negative feedback associated with media content from a client device;

a media recommendation generator configured to generate media content recommendations based on the representation of negative feedback; and

a broadcast transmitter configured to transmit the media content recommendations to one or more client devices.

26. One or more computer-readable media comprising computer executable instructions that, when executed, direct a computing system to:

gather negative feedback submitted by a user;

associate the negative feedback with a media content attribute; and

generate media content recommendations based, at least in part, on the negative feedback.

27. One or more computer-readable media comprising computer executable instructions that, when executed, direct a computing system to:

receive negative feedback associated with media content from a user;

transmit the negative feedback to a media distribution system; and

receive from the media distribution system, media content recommendations that are based, at least in part, on the negative feedback.

28. One or more computer-readable media comprising computer executable instructions that, when executed, direct a computing system to:

receive negative feedback associated with media content;

generate media content recommendations based, at least in part, on the negative feedback; and

serve the media content recommendations to one or more client devices from presentation to a user.
