1. A distributed cable modem termination system in a hybrid fiber/coaxial (HFC) plant, comprising:
- at least one network layer;
at least one media access control layer; and
one or more physical layers, wherein said at least one network layer, said at least one media access control layer, and said one or more physical layers each function as separate modules, enabling each layer to be in separate component locations of said HFC plant, yet having said at least one network layer connected to said at least one media access control layer and each of said one or more physical layers connected to said at least one media access control layer.

Abstract
A distributed CMTS in a hybrid fiber/coaxial (HFC) plant. The distributed CMTS comprises at least one network layer, at least one media access control layer, and one or more physical layers. The at least one network layer, at least one media access control layer and one or more physical layers each function as separate modules, enabling them to be in separate locations, yet physically connected, throughout the HFC plant.

12. A method for determining the placement of a distributed cable modem termination system in a hybrid fiber/coaxial (HFC) plant, comprising:
-
(1) assessing said HFC plant and bandwidth requirements for each cable modem in said HFC plant;
(2) determining the location of one or more physical layers of said distributed cable modem termination system to meet bandwidth and noise requirements for placement in said HFC plant;
(3) determining the location of one or more media access control layers of said distributed cable modem termination system to meet physical layer capacity determined in step (2) for placement in said HFC plant; and
(4) determining the location of one or more network layers to avoid latency problems based on equipment within said HFC plant for placement.
