Abstract
A device for emergency transport of pediatric patients that safely and efficiently transports a pediatric patient to a medical facility. To confine the patient to the device frame, it includes a child restraint in the form of a restraining belt assembly. The device accommodates children of varying size using the restraining belt assembly. The device also includes a hinge assembly that controls the relative rotation of portions of the frame. A clamp that can releasably attach to an object with a rail, such as a medical transport device is also described. To increase efficiency, the clamp includes a width accommodation feature and a universality feature. These features enable it to secure the device to objects of varying shapes and widths.

14. A device for emergency transport of pediatric patients for use with a stretcher having a rail to transport a patient, the device comprising:

a frame having first and second members adapted to receive the patient;
a hinge assembly coupled to the first and second members to permit relative rotation among the first and second members, the hinge assembly including an actuation device to selectively adjust the relative rotation between the first and second members and a hinge frame, the hinge frame being coupled to a first portion of the first member and a first portion of the second member, the actuation device including a lever coupled to a second portion of the first member and a locking pin adapted to selectively engage the hinge frame in a plurality of positions, the locking pin being coupled to the lever by a cable so as to disengage in response to actuation of the lever;
a restraining belt assembly releasably coupled to the first member and attached to the second member to releasably secure the patient in the frame, the restraining belt assembly including a plurality of belts coupled to a common connector; and
a clamp coupled to a second portion of the second member, the clamp adapted to be releasably coupled to the stretcher, the clamp including a housing member, a grasping device having a groove to couple to the rail, the rail having a shape selected from the group consisting of circular and rectangular, a cam surrounding a portion of the grasping device and adapted to be coupled via a spring to the housing member, the cam being displaced within the housing member when adjoined by the grasping device in response to being coupled to the stretcher, and a locking device coupled to the housing member and adapted to be coupled to the cam, the locking device securing the cam in a lock position when engaged. - View Dependent Claims (15, 16)

17. A universal clamp to releasably couple to an object having either a circular or rectangular shape, comprising:

a housing member;
a grasping device having a groove adapted to receive the object;
a cam surrounding a portion of the grasping device and coupled via a spring to the housing member, the cam being displaced within the housing member when adjoined by the grasping device in response to being coupled to at least one object; and
