Abstract

A technique for making a payment for a payor is provided. The technique includes receiving a request to make a payment to a payee for a payor. This request is processed to select a mode to electronically credit the payee. After the mode is selected an electronic credit is directed to the payee in the selected mode. A debit is also directed from a deposit account associated with the payor.

Claims

1. A method for making a payment on behalf of a payor, comprising:

receiving a request to make a payment to a payee on behalf of a payor;

processing the received request to select a mode of electronically crediting the payee;

directing an electronic credit to the payee in accordance with the selected mode of electronic crediting; and

directing a debit from a deposit account of the payor.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the selected mode of electronic crediting is based upon one of (i) a deposit account number of the payee deposit account, (ii) an account identifier associated with the payee deposit account other than the deposit account number, and (iii) a remittance network identifier associated with the payee.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the account identifier is a Universal Payment Identification Code.

4. The method of claim 2, wherein the account identifier is unknown to the payor.

5. The method of claim 2, wherein:

if the selected mode of electronic crediting is based upon the deposit account number, the electronic credit is directed to the payee deposit account and directing the electronic credit to the payee deposit account includes constructing an electronic transaction which includes the deposit account number and not either of the account identifier and the remittance network identifier;

if the selected mode of electronic crediting is based upon the account identifier, the electronic credit is directed to the payee deposit account and directing the electronic credit to the payee deposit account includes constructing an electronic transaction which includes the account identifier and not either of the deposit account number and the remittance network identifier; and

if the selected mode of electronic crediting is based upon the remittance network identifier, directing the electronic credit to the payee includes constructing an electronic transaction which includes the remittance network identifier and not either of the account identifier and the deposit account number.

6. The method of claim 2, wherein the account identifier is assigned by an entity other than a financial institution at which the payee deposit account is maintained or an entity receiving the payment request.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

accessing one or more stored rules in selecting the mode of electronic crediting.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the received request includes a payment amount, and further comprising:

comparing the payment amount to a predetermined threshold to select the mode of electronic crediting.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein remittance advice is related to the payment, and further comprising:

determining at least one of a volume, a type, and a format of the remittance advice to select the mode of electronic crediting.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein remittance advice is related to the payment, and further comprising:

selecting a mode of remittance advice delivery; and

delivering the remittance advice to the payee in accordance with the selected mode of remittance advice delivery;

wherein the selected mode of remittance advice delivery is not dependent upon the selected mode of electronic crediting.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the selected mode of remittance advice delivery is delivery via one of 1) the Federal Reserve Clearinghouse Network, 2) another clearinghouse network, 3) a remittance network, and 4) a direct delivery to the payee from an entity receiving the request.

12. The method of claim 10, wherein the selection of the mode of remittance advice delivery is based upon at least one of a volume, a type, and a format of the remittance advice.

13. The method of claim 10, further comprising:

accessing one or more rules in selecting the mode of remittance advice delivery.

14. A system for making a payment on behalf of a payor, comprising:

a communications interface configured to receive a request to make a payment to a payee on behalf of payor; and

a processor configured to select a mode of electronically crediting the payee, to direct an electronic credit to the payee in accordance with the selected mode of electronic crediting, and to direct a debit from a deposit account of the payor.

15. The system of claim 14, wherein the selected mode of electronic crediting is based upon one of (i) a deposit account number of the payee deposit account, (ii) an account identifier associated with the payee deposit account other than the deposit account number, and (iii) a remittance network identifier associated with the payee.

16. The system of claim 15, wherein the account identifier is a Universal Payment Identification Code.

17. The system of claim 15, wherein the account identifier is unknown to the payor.

18. The system of claim 15, wherein:

if the selected mode of electronic crediting is based upon the deposit account number, the electronic credit is directed to the payee deposit account and directing the electronic credit to the payee deposit account includes constructing an electronic transaction which includes the deposit account number and not either of the account identifier and the remittance network identifier;

if the selected mode of electronic crediting is based upon the account identifier, the electronic credit is directed to the payee deposit account and directing the electronic credit to the payee deposit account includes constructing an electronic transaction which includes the account identifier and not either of the deposit account number and the remittance network identifier; and

if the selected mode of electronic crediting is based upon the remittance network identifier, directing the electronic credit to the payee includes constructing an electronic transaction which includes the remittance network identifier and not either of the account identifier and the deposit account number.

19. The system of claim 15, wherein the account identifier is assigned by an entity other than a financial institution at which the payee deposit account is maintained or an entity receiving the payment request.

20. The system of claim 14, further comprising:

a memory configured to store one or more rules;

wherein the processor is further configured to access the one or more stored rules in selecting the mode of electronic crediting.

21. The system of claim 14, wherein:

the received request includes a payment amount; and

the processor is further configured to compare the payment amount to a predetermined threshold to select the mode of electronic crediting.

22. The system of claim 14, wherein:

remittance advice is related to the payment; and

the processor is further configured to determine at least one of a volume, a type, and a format of the remittance advice to select the mode of electronic crediting.

23. The system of claim 14, wherein:

remittance advice is related to the payment;

the processor is further configured to select a mode of remittance advice delivery and to cause the remittance advice to be delivered to the payee in accordance with the selected mode of remittance advice delivery; and

the selected mode of remittance advice delivery is not dependent upon the selected mode of electronic crediting.

24. The system of claim 23, wherein the selected delivery mode of remittance advice is delivery via one of 1) the Federal Reserve Clearinghouse Network, 2) another clearinghouse network, 3) a remittance network, and 4) a direct delivery to the payee from an entity receiving the request.

25. The system of claim 23, wherein the selection of the mode of remittance advice delivery is based upon at least one of a volume, a type, and a format of the remittance advice.

26. The system of claim 23, further comprising:

a memory configured to store one or more rules;

wherein the processor is further configured to access the one or more rules in selecting the mode of remittance advice delivery.

27. A database for storing information identifying payees for receipt of electronic payment, comprising:

a payee identifier identifying a payee;

first information identifying a first mode of electronically crediting a deposit account of the payee, the first information stored associated with the payee identifier; and

second information identifying a second mode of electronically crediting the payee deposit account different than the first mode, the second information stored associated with the payee identifier.

28. The database of claim 27, wherein:

the first information includes a deposit account number of the payee deposit account and a routing number identifying the financial institution at which the payee deposit account is maintained;

the second information includes an account identifier associated with the payee deposit account other than the payee deposit account number; and

the second information excludes the deposit account number.

29. The database of claim 28, wherein the account identifier is assigned by an entity other than a financial institution at which the payee deposit account is maintained or an entity maintaining the database.

30. The database of claim 28, wherein the account identifier is a Universal Payment Identification Code.

31. The database of claim 27, further comprising:

third information identifying a third mode of electronically crediting the payee deposit account different than the first mode and different than the second mode, the third information stored associated with the payee identifier and excluding the deposit account number.

32. The database of claim 31, wherein:

the first information includes a deposit account number of the payee deposit account and a routing number identifying the financial institution at which the payee deposit account is maintained; and

the second information includes an account identifier associated with the payee deposit account other than the payee deposit account number; and

the second information excludes the deposit account number; and

the third information includes a remittance network identifier associated with the payee.

33. The database of claim 27 further comprising:

a remittance advice delivery address, the remittance advise delivery address stored associated with the payee identifier.

34. The database of claim 27, wherein:

the first information includes a deposit account number of the payee deposit account and a routing number identifying the financial institution at which the payee deposit account is maintained; and

the second information includes a remittance network identifier associated with the payee.

35. The database of claim 27, wherein:

the first information includes an account identifier associated with the payee deposit account other than a deposit account number of the payee deposit account and excludes the payee deposit account number; and

the second information includes a remittance network identifier associated with the payee.
