Abstract

The present invention discloses a structural and mechanical model and modeling methods for human bone based on bone'"'"'s hierarchical structure and on its hierarchical mechanical behavior. The model allows for the assessment of bone deformations, computation of strains and stresses due to the specific forces acting on bone during function, and contemplates forces that do or do not cause viscous effects and forces that cause either elastic or plastic bone deformation.

Claims

1. A method of preparing a model of the structural patterns of an osteon, wherein the method comprises:

identifying structural patterns of the osteon;

comparing the structural patterns with collagen bundle and hydroxyapatite orientation; and

comparing the structural patterns with lacunar and canalicular distributions;

wherein the comparison of the structural patterns of the osteon with the collagen bundle and hydtoxyapatite orientation and with the distribution of the lacunae and canaliculae generates data; and

wherein the data is compiled in a computer program.

2. A model of osteons wherein the model comprises collagen-hydroxyapatite orientation, hydroxyapatite percentage, distributions of osteocytes'"'"' lacunae and canaliculae, and biological variations in dimension of osteons, lamellae, lacunae and canaliculae.

3. The model of claim 2, wherein the model is three-dimensional.

4. The model of claim 2, wherein the model chooses random values for the measurement of the osteon, lamellae, lacunae, canaliculae, or combinations thereof.

5. The model of claim 2, wherein the osteon is selected from the group of extinct osteons at final stages of calcification, alternate osteons at initial stages of calcification, alternate osteons at final stages of calcification, and bright osteons at final stages of calcification.

6. A method of determining fracture initiation in bone using the model of claim 2.

7. A method of determining fracture propagation in bone using the model of claim 2.

8. A method of determining the quasi-static tensional behavior of osteons wherein said method comprises using the model of claim 2.

9. A method of identifying the requirements of bone reconstruction and prosthesis wherein said method comprises using the model of claim 2.

10. A method for modeling the biological variability of compact bone using the model of claim 2.

11. A model of macrostructural properties of compact bone or cancellous, wherein the model comprises the structural properties of osteons, lamellae, lacunae, and canaliculac;

and the viscoelastic properties of the osteons, lamellae, lacunae, and canaliculae selected from the group consisting of mechanical properties such as angle-of-twist as a function of torque, osteon hydroxyapatite content, strain rate, or time;

collagen content, mucopolysaccharide content, hydroxyapatite content, collagen bundle orientation relative to osteon axis, osteocdyte content, osteoblast content, and content of porosity fluids.

12. A method of determining fracture initiation in bone using the model of claim 11.

13. A method of determining fracture propagation in bone using the model of claim 11.

14. A method of determining the quasi-static tensional behavior of osteons wherein said method comprises using the model of claim 11.

15. A method of identifying the requirements of bone reconstruction and prosthesis wherein said method comprises using the model of claim 11.

16. A method for modeling the biological variability of compact bone using the model of claim 11.
