Abstract

At least one data stream associated with an event is received. Compressing the data stream generates a first signal. A second signal is generated based on a difference between the data stream and the first signal. The second signal is compressed according to a measure of compression quality. The first signal and the second signal are transmitted.

Claims

1. A method for presenting streaming media, said method comprising:

receiving at least one data stream associated with an event;

generating a first signal by compressing said data stream and a second signal based on a difference between said data stream and said first signal;

compressing said second signal according to a measure of compression quality;

transmitting said first signal and said second signal.

2. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein said first signal is a low quality signal.

3. The method as recited in claim 1 further comprising delaying said second signal by a predetermined time.

4. The method as recited in claim 1 further comprising

receiving event-specific information comprising data stream information identifying at least one data stream associated with said event, compression quality information identifying said measure of compression quality for said data stream associated with said event, and sensor information identifying at least one sensor associated with said event;

and

determining said measure of compression quality for said data stream based on said compression quality information and said sensor.

5. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein said first signal and said second signal are transmitted to a client device.

6. The method as recited in claim 5 wherein said first signal and said second signal are transmitted by a wireless connection to said client device.

7. The method as recited in claim 5 further comprising rendering said first signal at said client device.

8. The method as recited in claim 3 wherein said first signal and said second signal are transmitted to a client device.

9. The method as recited in claim 8 wherein said first signal and said second signal are transmitted by a wireless connection to said client device.

10. The method as recited in claim 8 further comprising:

delaying said first signal by said predetermined time;

combining said first signal and said second signal at said client device to generate a high quality data stream; and

rendering said high quality data stream at said client device.

11. A method for presenting streaming media, said method comprising:

receiving a plurality of data stream associated with an event;

generating a plurality of first signals by compressing at least two data stream of said plurality of data streams and a plurality of second signal based on a difference between said plurality of data streams and said plurality of first signals;

determining a selected second signal of said plurality of second signals based on stream selection information;

compressing said selected second signal according to a measure of compression quality;

transmitting said plurality of first signals, said selected second signal, and said stream selection information.

12. The method as recited in claim 11 wherein said plurality of first signals are low quality signals.

13. The method as recited in claim 11 further comprising:

delaying said plurality of second signals by a predetermined time; and

delaying said stream selection information by said predetermined time.

14. The method as recited in claim 11 further comprising

receiving event-specific information comprising data stream information identifying said plurality of data streams associated with said event, compression quality information identifying said measure of compression quality for said plurality of data streams associated with said event, sensor information identifying a plurality of sensors associated with said event, and data stream selection information identifying at least one criterion for determining said selected second signal from said plurality of data streams;

and

determining said measure of compression quality for said selected second signal based on said compression quality information and at least one sensor of said plurality of sensors.

15. The method as recited in claim 11 wherein said plurality of first signals, said second signal and said stream selection are transmitted by a wireless connection to a client device.

16. An electronic device comprising:

a receiver configured to receive at least one data stream associated with an event;

a first compressor configured to generate a compressed signal based on said data stream and a differential signal based on a difference between said data stream and said compressed signal;

a second compressor for compressing said differential signal according to a measure of compression quality; and

a transmitter for transmitting said compressed signal and said differential signal.

17. The electronic device as recited in claim 16 further comprising a first delay device configured to delay said differential signal by a predetermined time.

18. The electronic device as recited in claim 16 further comprising:

a memory unit having stored therein event-specific information for said event, said event-specific information comprising data stream information identifying at least one said data stream associated with said event, compression quality information identifying said measure of compression quality for said data stream associated with said event, and sensor information identifying at least one sensor associated with said event; and

a compression quality selector configured to determine said measure of compression quality based on said compression quality information and said sensor.

19. The electronic device as recited in claim 16 wherein said transmitter is configured to transmit said compressed signal and said differential signal to a client device.

20. The electronic device as recited in claim 19 wherein said transmitter is configured to transmit said compressed signal and said differential signal by a wireless connection to said client device.

21. A method for selectively rendering streaming media, said method comprising:

receiving a first signal associated with an event and a second signal associated with said event, wherein said first signal is generated by compressing a data stream and said second signal is generated based on a difference between said first signal and said data stream;

generating a high quality signal by adding said first signal and said second signal;

receiving a user request;

provided said user request is for rendering a low quality signal, rendering said first signal; and

provided said user request is for rendering a high quality signal, rendering said high quality signal.

22. The method as recited in claim 21 wherein said first signal and said second signal are video signals.

23. The method as recited in claim 21 further comprising delaying said first signal by a predetermined time.

24. The method as recited in claim 21 wherein said first signal and said second signal are received over a wireless connection.

25. An electronic device comprising:

a receiver configured to receive a first signal associated with an event and a second signal associated with said event, wherein said first signal is generated by compressing a data stream and said second signal is generated based on a difference between said first signal and said data stream;

a signal adder configured to add said first signal and said second signal to generate a high quality signal;

a signal selector configured to render a signal based on a user request, wherein said first signal is rendered in response to said user request for a low quality signal and wherein said high quality signal is rendered in response to said user request for said high quality signal; and

an audio/video device for rendering said signal in response to said user request.

26. The electronic device as recited in claim 25 wherein said first signal and said second signal are video signals.

27. The electronic device as recited in claim 25 further comprising a delay device configured to delay said first signal by a predetermined time.

28. The electronic device as recited in claim 25 wherein said first signal and said second signal are received over a wireless connection.
