Abstract

Method and system for assessing a student'"'"'s understanding of a process that may unfold, e.g., overtime and space. The present invention provides a sophisticated approach of directing students to perform self-explanation, and enables instructors to enhance the value of this pedagogical process by providing meaningful and rapid feedback in a classroom setting.

Claims

1. A method for providing feedback, said method comprising the steps of:

a) forwarding a query pertaining to a structured entity having a plurality of parts

b) forwarding a plurality of response templates; and

c) receiving a response from a first client device, wherein said response comprises at least one of said response templates related to at least one part of said structured entity.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of:

d) receiving a response from a second client device, wherein said response comprises at least one of said response templates related to at least one part of said structured entity.

3. The method of claim 2, further comprising the step of:

e) aggregating said responses from said first and second client devices to produce an aggregated result.

4. The method of claim 3, further comprising the step of:

f) forwarding said aggregated result to said first client device or said second client device.

5. The method of claim 2, further comprising the step of:

e) forwarding said response of said first client device to said second client device.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein said structured entity comprises a sequential multi-step process.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein said structured entity comprises a literary work or a portion of a literary work.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein said literary work is a poem.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein said structured entity comprises a computer program.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein said structured entity comprises a musical composition.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein said structured entity comprises a biological organism.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein said structured entity comprises a computer data structure.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein said structured entity comprises an architectural structure.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein said structured entity comprises a chemical process.

15. The method of claim 1, wherein said response contains an input entered by using said first client device.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein said input comprises filling in said at least one response template.

17. The method of claim 15, wherein said input comprises linking said at least one response template to at least one part of said structured entity.

18. The method of claim 15, wherein said input comprises linking a plurality of parts of said structured entity.

19. The method of claim 1, wherein said query is a multi-part complex query.

20. The method of claim 1, wherein said input comprises at least one tag.

21. A method for providing feedback, said method comprising the steps of:

a) receiving a query pertaining to a structured entity having a plurality of parts;

b) receiving a plurality of response templates; and

c) providing a response to an aggregating device from a first client device, wherein said response comprises at least one of said response templates related to at least one part of said structured entity.

22. The method of claim 21, further comprising the step of:

d) providing a response to the aggregating device from a second client device, wherein said response comprises at least one of said response templates related to at least one part of said structured entity.

23. The method of claim 22, further comprising the step of:

e) requesting for an aggregated result of said responses from said first and second client devices.

24. The method of claim 23, further comprising the step of:

f) receiving said aggregated result.

25. The method of claim 22, further comprising the step of:

f) receiving said response of said first client device by said second client device.

26. The method of claim 21, wherein said structured entity comprises a sequential multi-step process.

27. The method of claim 21, wherein said structured entity comprises a literary work or a portion of a literary work.

28. The method of claim 27, wherein said literary work is a poem.

29. The method of claim 21, wherein said structured entity comprises a computer program.

35. A computer-readable medium having stored thereon a plurality of instructions, the plurality of instructions including instructions which, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform the steps comprising of:

a) forwarding a query pertaining to a structured entity having a plurality of parts

b) forwarding a plurality of response templates; and

c) receiving a response from a first client device, wherein said response comprises at least one of said response templates related to at least one part of said structured entity.

36. The computer-readable medium of claim 35, further comprising the step of:

d) receiving a response from a second client device, wherein said response comprises at least one of said response templates related to at least one part of said structured entity.

37. The computer-readable medium of claim 36, further comprising the step of:

e) aggregating said responses from said first and second client devices to produce an aggregated result.

38. The computer-readable medium of claim 37, further comprising the step of:

f) forwarding said aggregated result to said first client device or said second client device.

39. The computer-readable medium of claim 36, further comprising the step of:

e) forwarding said response of said first client device to said second client device.

40. The computer-readable medium of claim 35, wherein said structured entity comprises a sequential multi-step process.

55. A computer-readable medium having stored thereon a plurality of instructions, the plurality of instructions including instructions which, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform the steps comprising of:

a) receiving a query pertaining to a structured entity having a plurality of parts;

b) receiving a plurality of response templates; and

c) providing a response to an aggregating device from a first client device, wherein said response comprises at least one of said response templates related to at least one part of said structured entity.

56. The computer-readable medium of claim 55, further comprising the step of:

d) providing a response to the aggregating device from a second client device, wherein said response comprises at least one of said response templates related to at least one part of said structured entity.

57. The computer-readable medium of claim 56, further comprising the step of:

e) requesting for an aggregated result of said responses from said first and second client devices.

58. The computer-readable medium of claim 57, further comprising the step of:

f) receiving said aggregated result.

59. The computer-readable medium of claim 56, further comprising the step of:

f) receiving said response of said first client device by said second client device.

69. An apparatus for providing feedback, said apparatus comprising:

means for forwarding a query pertaining to a structured entity having a plurality of parts and for forwarding a plurality of response templates; and

means for receiving a response from a first client device, wherein said response comprises at least one of said response templates related to at least one part of said structured entity.

70. The apparatus of claim 69, wherein said means for receiving further receives a response from a second client device, wherein said response comprises at least one of said response templates related to at least one part of said structured entity.

71. The apparatus of claim 70, further comprising:

means for aggregating said responses from said first and second client devices to produce an aggregated result.

72. The apparatus of claim 71, wherein said forwarding means further forwards said aggregated result to said first client device or said second client device.

73. The apparatus of claim 70, wherein said forwarding means further forwards said response of said first client device to said second client device.

74. An apparatus for providing feedback, said apparatus comprising:

means for receiving a query pertaining to a structured entity having a plurality of parts and for receiving a plurality of response templates; and

means for providing a response to an aggregating device from a first client device, wherein said response comprises at least one of said response templates related to at least one part of said structured entity.

75. The apparatus of claim 74, wherein said means for providing further provides a response to the aggregating device from a second client device, wherein said response comprises at least one of said response templates related to at least one part of said structured entity.

76. The apparatus of claim 75, further comprising:

means for requesting for an aggregated result of said responses from said first and second client devices.

77. The apparatus of claim 76, wherein said receiving means further receives said aggregated result.

78. The apparatus of claim 75, wherein said receiving means further receives said response of said first client device by said second client device.

79. A system for providing feedback, said system comprising:

a first client device; and

an aggregating device for forwarding a query pertaining to a structured entity having a plurality of parts and a plurality of response templates to said first client device, where said aggregating device receives a response from said first client device, wherein said response comprises at least one of said response templates related to at least one part of said structured entity.
