Abstract

A method for providing limited printing of a digital work having one or more rights associated therewith within a system having at least one repository configured to enforce use of the digital work in accordance with the rights. A limited printing right, or other rights, can be associated with a digital work. The limited printing right specifies a type of printer and type of ticket required for exercising the limited printing right of the digital work for a limited printing fee. A copy of the digital work is distributed along with the ticket to a consumer. The limited printing fee is reported as a transaction in response to the consumer exercising the limited printing right.

Claims

1. A method for providing limited printing of a digital work having one or more rights associated therewith within a system having at least one repository configured to enforce use of said digital work in accordance with said one or more rights, said method comprising:

associating a limited printing right with a digital work, said limited printing right specifying a type of printer and type of ticket required for exercising said limited printing right of said digital work for a limited printing fee;

distributing a copy of said digital work along with said ticket to a consumer; and

reporting said limited printing fee as a transaction in response to said consumer exercising said limited printing right.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein said type of printer includes a type of cassette recorder or a type of desktop paper printer.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

bundling a limited number of tickets with said digital work for limited printing of said digital work.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

selling additional tickets for limited printing of said digital work.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

employing a ticket agent for processing said ticket by said consumer, whereby said consumer can exercise said limited printing right by presenting said ticket to said ticket agent.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein said limited print right is stored on the same physical device as the said associated digital work.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein said limited print right and the associated digital work are stored on different physical devices.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein at least one of said repositories has a minimum security level.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein said repositories have respective security levels.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein said repositories are trustworthy.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein at least one of said repositories have a minimum security level.

15. The method of claim 1, wherein said repositories provide have respective security levels.

16. The method of claim 1, wherein said repositories are trustworthy.

11. A method for providing demand publishing of a digital work having one or more rights associated therewith within a system having at least one repository configured to enforce use of said work in accordance with said one or more rights, said method comprising:

associating a printing right with a digital work, said printing right specifying a type of printer for exercising said printing right of said work and a printing fee;

reporting said printing fee as a transaction in response to printing of said digital work.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein said print right is stored on the same physical device as said associated digital work.

13. The method of claim 11, wherein said print right and said associated digital work are stored on different physical devices.

17. The method of claim 11, further comprising:

associating a copy right with said digital work, said copy right specifying that a copy of said digital work can be distributed between repositories.

18. The method of claim 11, further comprising:

associating a copy right with said digital work, said copy right specifying that a copy of said digital work can be distributed between repositories in exchange for a copy fee; and

reporting said copy fee as a transaction when a copy of said work is distributed between said repositories.

19. The method of claim 11, further comprising:

distributing a print of said digital work embedded in a collection of works to said consumer.

20. The method of claim 11, further comprising:

including a tracer message in said print of said digital work, whereby unauthorized copying of said printing can be discouraged.

21. The method of claim 20, further comprising:

identifying with said tracer message a printing transaction, and a copy number associated with said printing.

22. The method of claim 20, further comprising:

hiding said tracer message on said printing of said digital work.

23. The method of claim 20, further comprising:

secretly embedding said tracer message in text of said printing of said digital work.

24. The method of claim 23, further comprising:

secretly embedding said tracer message by encoding said tracer message in a grey scale of said text.

25. The method of any one of claims 11 through 24, wherein at least one of said repositories has a minimum security level.

26. The method of any one of claims 11 through 24, wherein said repositories have respective security levels.

27. The method of any one of claims 11 through 24, wherein said repositories are trustworthy.

28. The method of ant one of claims 11 through 24, wherein said digital work is a composite digital work.

29. A method for providing printing of a digital work having one or more rights associated therewith within a system having at least one repository configured to enforce use of said work in accordance with said one or more rights, said method comprising:

associating a copy right and a print right with a digital work, said print right specifying a printing fee;

copying said digital work to a print repository;

printing said digital work;

reporting said printing fee as a transaction if said digital work is printed.

30. The method of claim 29, wherein said copy right specifies a copy fee and further comprising:

reporting said copy fee as a transaction if said digital work is copied.

31. The method of any one of claims 29 or 30, wherein said printing fee is determined when the said digital work is about to be printed.

32. The method of any one of claims 29 or 30, wherein at least one of said copy right and the said print right are stored on the same physical device as the associated digital work.

33. The method of any one of claims 29 or 30, wherein at least one of said copy right, and said print right are stored on different physical devices then the asociated digital work.

34. The method of any one of claims 29 or 30, wherein at least one of said repositories has a minimum security level.

35. The method of any one of claims 29 or 30, wherein said repositories have respective security levels.

36. The method of any one of claims 29 or 30, wherein said repositories are trustworthy.
