Abstract

A Human-Computer Interface that comprises a set of sensors, actuators and computer generated controls is characterised in that the controls are projected in three spatial dimensions by a three dimensional display device and are manipulated by means of an operator interacting with them by movements of the operator'"'"'s body, these movements being detected using the sensor system, where characteristics of a displayed target volume change according to the movement made, and actuators worn on the body, react according to how the body interacts with the computer generated controls.

Claims

1. A Human-Computer Interface that comprises a set of sensors, actuators and computer generated controls, characterised in that the controls are projected in three spatial dimensions by a three dimensional display device and are manipulated by means of an operator interacting with them by movements of the operator'"'"'s body, these movement being detected using the sensor system, where characteristics of a displayed target volume change according to the movement made, and actuators worn on the body react according to how the body interacts with the computer generated controls.

2. A Human Computer Interface as claimed in claim 1 whereby at least one of the controls substantially surrounds the displayed target volume.

3. A Human Computer Interface as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 whereby the displayed target volume also acts a control.

4. A Human Computer Interface as claimed in claims 1, 2 or 3 whereby adjustment of a parameter handled by at least one of the controls is achieved by immersing part of the body into the control and moving that part of the body.

5. A Human Computer Interface as claimed in claims 1, 2 or 3 whereby mechanical actuators attached to that part of the body that is in contact with the control operate to oppose movement of that part of the body.

6. A Human Computer Interface as claimed in any of the above claims whereby the three dimensional display system projects at least one of the controls such that it appears to be in two dimensions.

7. A Human Computer interface as claimed in any of the above claims whereby any of the controls may be repositioned around the three dimensional display system by the user

12. A computer readable medium having a program recorded thereon in which the program causes a computer system running the program and having a three dimensional display to operate the Human Computer Interface as claimed in claim 1.

A method of controlling parameters of a 3D target volume whereby an operator interacts with at least one control such that body movements made by the operator are detected using a sensor system, a signal is generated according to the body movement made, and at least one characteristic of the 3D target volume varied according to the signal generated, characterised in that the control is also displayed in 3D.

A computer system comprising at least processing means, memory and a Human-Computer Interface that itself comprises a set of sensors, actuators and computer generated controls, characterised in that the controls are projected in three spatial dimensions by a three dimensional display devise and are manipulated by means of an operator interacting with them by movements of the operators body, these movements being detected using the sensor system, where characteristics of a displayed target volume change according to the movement made, and actuators worn on the body react according to how the body interacts with the computer generated controls.

A computer aided design system having a computer system comprising at least processing means, memory and a Human-Computer Interface that itself comprises a set of sensors, actuators and computer generated controls, characterised in that the controls are projected in three spatial dimensions by a three dimensional display device and are manipulated by means of an operator interacting with them by movements of the operators body, these movements being detected using the sensor system, where characteristics of a displayed target volume change according to the movement made, and actuators worn on the body react according to how the body interacts with the computer generated controls.

A computer system comprising at least processing means, memory and a Human-Computer Interface that itself comprises a set of sensors, actuators and computer generated controls whereby the processing means is remote from the Human-Computer Interface, and is connected to it by means of a computer network, characterised in that the controls are projected in three spatial dimensions by a three dimensional display device and are manipulated by means of an operator interacting with them by movements of the operator'"'"'s body, these movements being detected using the sensor system, where characteristics of a displayed target volume change according to the movement made, and actuators worn on the body react according to how the body interacts with the computer generated controls.

13. A Human Computer Interface as hereinbefore described, with reference to the accompanying diagrams.
