Abstract

The invention provides location information indicating the geographical location of a mobile station via a core net-work node serving the mobile station The method includes the steps of initiating a communication between the mobile station and the network by calculating the geographical location, supplying corresponding location information indicating the geographical location to the core network node, and subsequently routing the communication between the mobile station and the network.

Claims

1. A method for providing a location application of a communication network with location information indicating the geographical location of a mobile station (MS), via a core network node serving the MS, said method comprising the steps of;

initiating a communication between the MS and the network by the steps of;

calculating the geographical location;

supplying corresponding location information indicating the geographical location to the core network node; and

subsequently routing the communication between the MS anc the network.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of initiating a call between the MS and network node further comprises the steps of:

communicating said location information from said network node to service control means (SCP), and

confirming said communication responsive to instructions received from said service control means.

3. The method of claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the step of calculating the geographical location comprises the steps of:

providing the MS with an initiate positioning signal supplying the MS with locating signals, from which the geographical location of the MS can be calculated; and

responsive to the locating signals, via the MS, executing a location calculation to thereby calculate the geographical location.

4. The method of claim 3 further comprising the steps of:

supplying the corresponding location information to the core network node during a normal call SETUP procedure between the MS and the core network node.

5. A method according to any one of claims 1 to 4 further comprising the steps of:

supplying the corresponding location information to the core network node prior to an initial detection point of call state model in which the control relationship shall be established between core network node and SCP.

6. The method of claim 1 or 2 wherein the step of calculating the geographical location comprises the steps of:

providing a radio access network (RAN) serving the location of the MS with an initiate positioning signal;

supplying the RAN with locating signals from which the geographical location of the MS can be calculated; and

responsive to the locating signals, via the RAN, executing a location calculation to thereby calculate the geographical location.

7. A method according to claim 6 further comprising the steps of:

supplying the corresponding location information to the core network node prior to a normal call SETUP procedure between the MS and core network node.

8. A method according to claim 6 further comprising the steps of:

supplying the corresponding location information to the core network node with a Positioning result signal.

9. A method according to claim 6 further comprising the steps of, after a BSSMAP complete L3 signal;

supplying the corresponding location information to the core network node with a dedicated Location report signal including only location information.

10. A method according to claim 6 further comprising the steps of:

In the core network node, identifying a positioning indicator associated with the subscriber;

responsive to the indicator sending a request positioning signal from the core network node to the SMLC; and

subsequently calculating the geographical location.

12. A method according to any one of claims 1 to 10 whereby the geographical location is calculated via an enhanced observed time difference position mechanism.

13. A method according to any one of claims 1 to 10 whereby the geographical location is calculated via a global positioning system position mechanism.

14. A method according to any one of claims 1 to 10 in which the call is a normal audio call and/or short message service call and/or general packet radio service call.

15. The method of any preceding claim in which said communication comprises a call between the MS and the network.

16. The method of any preceding claim in which the communication network is an intelligent telecommunication network (IN).

17. The method of any preceding claim in which said network node is a switching centre.

11. A method according to any proceeding claim whereby the geographical location is calculated via a time of arrival position mechanism.

18. A method for providing a location application of a communication network with location information indicating the geographical location of a mobile station (MS), via a core network node serving the MS, said method comprising the steps of;

initiating a communication between the MS and the network;

calculating the geographical location;

supplying corresponding location information indicating the geographical location to the core network node; and

providing the said geographical location from the core network node to a service control means in association with at least one communication control related event.

19. A core network node for controlling communication between the MS and the network, said core network node comprising:

a) communication establishment and control means

b) communication related event reporting means towards at least one service control means

c) location receiving means for receiving the location information indicating the geographical location of a mobile station (MS)

d) reporting means for reporting the said geographical location in association with at least one communication control related event.

20. A service control node for receiving communication related event reports from at least one core network node, said service control node comprising:

a) a receiving means for receiving the location information indicating the geographical location of a mobile station (MS) in association with at least one communication related event associated with said MS.
