Abstract

An expandable frame for an embolic filtering device used to capture embolic debris in a body vessel includes a first half frame having a first control arm connected to a second control arm by a partial loop and a second half frame having a first control arm connected to a second control arm by a partial loop. The partial loops cooperatively form a composite loop for attachment of a filtering element which will expand in the body vessel to capture embolic debris entrained in the fluid of the vessel. The lengths and positioning of the first and second control arms of each half frame can be varied to create an expandable frame which conforms to the size and shape of the body vessel in which the filtering device is deployed. Additionally, the radius of the partial loops, along with the length of the arc of the partial loops, can be varied on each of the frames to create a composite filtering assembly that can easily adapt to the size and shape of the body vessel. Additionally, the control arms of the half frames can be disposed either proximally or distally of the composite loop to create a distinct filtering structure.

Claims

1. An expandable frame for an embolic filtering device used to capture embolic debris in a body vessel, the frame comprising:

a first half frame adapted to move between an unexpanded position and an expanded position, the first half frame having a first control arm connected to a second control arm by a partial loop;

a second half frame adapted to move between an unexpanded position and an expanded position, the second half frame having a first control arm connected to a second control arm by a partial loop, the partial loops of the first and second half frames cooperating to form a composite opening for attachment of a filtering element when placed in the expanded position;

wherein the first control arm of the first half frame is smaller than the second control arm of the first half frame.

2. The expandable frame of claim 1, wherein the first control arm of the second half frame is smaller than the second control arm of the second half frame.

3. The expandable frame of claim 1, wherein the second control arm of the second half frame is smaller than the first control arm of the second half frame.

4. The expandable frame of claim 1, wherein the partial loops of the the first and second half frame each have a particular radius, wherein one of the partials loops has a smaller radius than the other partial loop.

The expandable frame of claim 1, wherein the first control arm of the first half frame is disposed substantially adjacent to the second control arm of the first half frame and first control arm of the second half frame is disposed substantially adjacent to the second control arm of the second half frame.

The expandable frame of claim 1, wherein the first control arm of the first half frame is disposed proximal to the partial loop and the second control arm of the first half frame is disposed distal of the partial loop and the first control arm of the second half frame is disposed proximal to the partial loop and the second control arm of the second half frame is disposed distal of the partial loop.

7. The expandable frame of claim 1, wherein the expandable frame is adapted to be rotatable mounted to a guide wire.

8. An embolic filtering device used to capture embolic debris in a body vessel, comprising:

a steerable guide wire having a proximal end and a distal end; and

an expandable filter assembly including a self-expanding frame having a first half frame adapted to move between an unexpanded position and an expanded position, the first half frame having a first control arm connected to a second control arm by a partial loop;

a second half frame adapted to move between an unexpanded position and an expanded position, the second half frame having a first control arm connected to a second control arm by a partial loop, the partial loops of the first and second half frames cooperating to form a composite opening;

a filtering element attached to the partial loops of the first and second half frames; and

means for rotatably mounting the expandable filter assembly to the guide wire.

9. The expandable frame of claim 8, wherein the first control arm of the first half frame is smaller than the second control arm of the first half frame and the first control arm of the second half frame is smaller than the second control arm of the second half frame.

10. The expandable frame of claim 9, wherein the partial loops of the the first and second half frame each have a particular radius, wherein one of the partials loops has a smaller radius than the other partial loop.

11. An expandable frame for an embolic filtering device used to capture embolic debris in a body vessel, the frame comprising:

a first half frame adapted to move between an unexpanded position and an expanded position, the first half frame having a first control arm connected to a second control arm by a partial loop;

a second half frame adapted to move between an unexpanded position and an expanded position, the second half frame having a first control arm connected to a second control arm by a partial loop, the partial loops of the first and second half frames cooperating to form a composite loop for attachment of a filtering element when placed in the expanded position;

wherein the first and second control arms of the first half frame are disposed distally of the composite loop and the first and second arms of the second half frame are disposed proximally of the composite loop.

12. The expandable frame of claim 11, wherein the first half frame includes a third control attached to the partial loop of the first half frame which is disposed proximally of the composite loop.

13. The expandable frame of claim 11, wherein the expandable frame is adapted to be rotatable mounted to a guide wire.

14. The expandable frame of claim 12, wherein each of the first and second control arms of the second half frame have an end connected to a collar and the third control arm of the first half frame has an end connected to the same collar.

15. The expandable frame of claim 14, wherein each of the first and second control arms of the first half frame have an end connected to a second collar disposed distally from the first-mentioned collar.

16. An embolic filtering device used to capture embolic debris in a body vessel, comprising:

a steerable guide wire having a proximal end and a distal end; and

an expandable filter assembly including a self-expanding frame having a first half frame adapted to move between an unexpanded position and an expanded position, the first half frame having a first control arm connected to a second control arm by a partial loop;

a second half frame adapted to move between an unexpanded position and an expanded position, the second half frame having a first control arm connected to a second control arm by a partial loop, the partial loops of the first and second half frames cooperating to form a composite loop;

a filtering element attached to the composite loop formed by the first and second half frames; and

means for rotatably mounting the expandable filter assembly to the guide, wherein the first and second control arms of the first half frame are disposed distally of the composite loop and the first and second arms of the second half frame are disposed proximally of the composite loop.

17. The embolic filtering device of claim 16, wherein the first half frame includes a third control attached to the partial loop of the first half frame which is disposed proximally of the composite loop.

18. The embolic filtering device of claim 17, wherein each of the first and second control arms of the second half frame have an end connected to a collar and the third control arm of the first half frame has an end connected to the same collar.

19. The embolic filtering device of claim 18, wherein each of the first and second control arms of the first half frame have an end connected to a second collar disposed distally from the first-mentioned collar.

20. An expandable frame for an embolic filtering device used to capture embolic debris in a body vessel, the frame comprising:

a first half frame adapted to move between an unexpanded position and an expanded position, the first half frame having a first control arm connected to a second control arm by a partial loop;

a second half frame adapted to move between an unexpanded position and an expanded position, the second half frame having a first control arm connected to a second control arm by a partial loop, the partial loops of the first and second half frames cooperating to form a composite loop for attachment of a filtering element when placed in the expanded position;

wherein each of the partial loops of the first and second half frame have a circular shaped arc when in the expanded position, the arc being measured between the point of attachment of the first control arm and the partial loop to the point of attachment of the second control arm and the partial loop, one of the partials loops having a smaller circular shaped arc than the other partial loop.

21. The expandable frame of claim 20, wherein the circular arc of the second half frame is less than 180 degrees but greater than 90 degrees.

22. The expandable frame of claim 20, wherein each of the partial loops of the first and second half frame have a particular radius when placed in the expanded position, one of the partials loops having a smaller radius than the other partial loop.

23. An embolic filtering device used to capture embolic debris in a body vessel, comprising:

a steerable guide wire having a proximal end and a distal end; and

an expandable filter assembly including a self-expanding frame having a first half frame adapted to move between an unexpanded position and an expanded position, the first half frame having a first control arm connected to a second control arm by a partial loop;

a second half frame adapted to move between an unexpanded position and an expanded position, the second half frame having a first control arm connected to a second control arm by a partial loop, the partial loops of the first and second half frames cooperating to form a composite loop;

a filtering element attached to the composite loop formed by the first and second half frames; and

means for rotatably mounting the expandable filter assembly to the guide, wherein each of the partial loops of the first and second half frame have a circular shaped arc when in the expanded position, the arc being measured between the point of attachment of the first control arm and the partial loop to the point of attachment of the second control arm and the partial loop, one of the partials loops having a smaller circular shaped arc than the other partial loop.

24. The embolic filtering device of claim 23, wherein the circular arc of the second half frame is less than 180 degrees but greater than 90 degrees.

25. The embolic filtering device of claim 24, wherein each of the partial loops of the first and second half frame have a particular radius when placed in the expanded position, one of the partials loops having a smaller radius than the other partial loop.

26. An expandable frame for an embolic filtering device used to capture embolic debris in a body vessel, the frame comprising:

a first half frame adapted to move between an unexpanded position and an expanded position, the first half frame having a first control arm connected to a second control arm by a partial loop;

a second half frame adapted to move between an unexpanded position and an expanded position, the second half frame having a first control arm connected to a second control arm by a partial loop, the partial loops of the first and second half frames cooperating to form a composite loop for attachment of a filtering element when placed in the expanded position, the first and second control arms of each half frame having a free end connected to a retaining member and having a longitudinal length;

wherein when placed in the expanded position, the first control arm of the first half frame is set to expand radially outward at a position along its longitudinal length and the second control arm is set to expand at a position along its longitudinal length which is different than the first control arm.

27. An expandable frame for an embolic filtering device used to capture embolic debris in a body vessel, the frame comprising:

a first half frame adapted to move between an unexpanded position and an expanded position, the first half frame having a first control arm connected to a second control arm by a partial loop;

a second half frame adapted to move between an unexpanded position and an expanded position, the second half frame having a first control arm connected to a second control arm by a partial loop, the partial loops of the first and second half frames cooperating to form a composite opening for attachment of a filtering element when placed in the expanded position;

wherein the length of the first and second control arms of the first half frame is different from the length of the first and second control arms of the second half frame.

28. The expandable frame of claim 27, wherein the partial loops of the the first and second half frame each have a particular radius, wherein the partials loop of the first half frame is different than the radius of the partial loop of the second half frame.

29. The expandable frame of claim 28, wherein the radius of the partial loop of the first half frame is larger than the radius of the partial loop of the second half frame and the length of the first and second control arms of the first half frame is larger than the length of the first and second control arms of the second half frame.

30. An expandable frame for an embolic filtering device used to capture embolic debris in a body vessel, the frame comprising:

a first half frame adapted to move between an unexpanded position and an expanded position, the first half frame having a first control arm connected to a second control arm by a partial loop;

a second half frame adapted to move between an unexpanded position and an expanded position, the second half frame having a first control arm connected to a second control arm by a partial loop, the partial loops of the first and second half frames cooperating to form a composite opening for attachment of a filtering element when placed in the expanded position;

wherein at least one of the half frames includes an region of articulation for enhancing the ability of the half frame to move between the unexpanded and expanded positions.

31. The expandable frame of claim 30, wherein the region of articulation is located on the partial loop forming part of the half frame.

32. The expandable frame of claim 30, wherein a region of articulation is located on each of the half frames.

33. The expandable frame of claim 32, wherein the region of articulation is located on the partial loops of the half frames.

34. The expandable frame of claim 33, wherein the region of articulation is a loop in the member forming the partial loop.

35. The expandable frame of claim 33, wherein the region of articulation is a loop in the structure forming the partial loop.

36. The expandable frame of claim 35, wherein the region of articulation is disposed distal to the partial loop.

37. The expandable frame of claim 35, wherein the region of articulation is disposed proximal to the partial loop.

38. The expandable frame of claim 33, wherein the region of articulation is a D-shaped loop created in the member forming the partial loop.

39. The expandable frame of claim 35, wherein the region of articulation is disposed distal to the partial loop.

40. The expandable frame of claim 35, wherein the region of articulation is disposed proximal to the partial loop.

41. An expandable frame for an embolic filtering device used to capture embolic debris in a body vessel, the frame comprising:

a first half frame adapted to move between an unexpanded position and an expanded position, the first half frame having a first control arm connected to a second control arm by a partial loop;

a second half frame adapted to move between an unexpanded position and an expanded position, the second half frame having a first control arm connected to a second control arm by a partial loop, the partial loops of the first and second half frames cooperating to form a composite loop for attachment of a filtering element when placed in the expanded position;

wherein the first control arm of the first half frame is disposed distally of the composite loop and the second arm of the first half frame is disposed proximally of the composite loop and the first control arm of the second half frame is disposed distally of the composite loop and the second arm of the second half frame is disposed proximally of the composite loop.

42. An embolic filtering device used to capture embolic debris in a body vessel, comprising:

a steerable guide wire having a proximal end and a distal end; and

an expandable filter assembly including a self-expanding frame having a first half frame adapted to move between an unexpanded position and an expanded position, the first half frame having a first control arm connected to a second control arm by a partial loop;

a second half frame adapted to move between an unexpanded position and an expanded position, the second half frame having a first control arm connected to a second control arm by a partial loop, the partial loops of the first and second half frames cooperating to form a composite opening;

a filtering element attached to the partial loops of the first and second half frames; and

a tubular structure rotatably mounted to the guide wire, the expandable frame and filtering element being mounted to the tubular structure.
