Abstract

Methods of fabricating organic devices that may have mixed small molecule organic layers are provided. A method of fabricating an organic light emitting device is provided. A first small molecule organic material is deposited to form an organic layer over a first electrode. A second small molecule organic material is solution deposited on and in physical contact with the first small molecule organic layer to form a second organic layer. Mixing of the first and second organic layers may occur. A second electrode is then deposited over the second small molecule organic layer. Another method of fabricating an organic light emitting device is also provided. A mixture of a first small molecule organic material and a second small molecule organic material are solution deposited over a first electrode, such that the first and second small molecule organic materials at least partially separate into first and second small molecule organic layers. A second electrode is then deposited over the first and second small molecule organic layers.

Claims

1. A method of fabricating an organic light emitting device comprising:

depositing a first organic layer over a first electrode, wherein the first organic layer comprises a first small molecule organic material;

solution-depositing a second organic layer on and in physical contact with the first small molecule organic layer to form a second organic layer, wherein the second organic layer further comprises a second small molecule organic material; and

depositing a second electrode over the second organic layer.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the second organic layer is deposited into patterned first, second and third regions.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein:

(a) the first region comprises the second small molecule organic material, wherein the second small molecule organic material is capable of emitting a first spectra of light;

(b) the second region comprises a third small molecule organic material, wherein the third small molecule organic material is capable of emitting a second spectra of light;

(c) the third region comprising the fourth small molecule organic material, wherein the fourth small molecule organic material is capable of emitting a third spectra of light.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the first, second and third regions further comprise a small molecule organic host material.

5. The method of claim 2, wherein the first, second and third regions are patterned by ink-jet printing.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the second small molecule organic material is deposited by ink jet printing.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the second organic layer comprises a small molecule organic emissive material.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the second organic layer comprises a small molecule organic phosphorescent emissive material.

9. The method of claim 7, wherein the second organic layer comprises a small molecule organic fluorescent emissive material.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the first electrode is an anode and the second electrode is a cathode.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the first electrode is a cathode and the second electrode is an anode.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the first organic layer comprises a first small molecule organic charge carrying material.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the first charge carrying material is a hole transport material.

14. The method of claim 12, wherein the first charge carrying material is an electron transporting material.

15. The method of claim 12, wherein the second organic layer comprises a second small molecule organic charge carrying material.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the second charge carrying material is a hole transport material.

17. The method of claim 15, wherein the second charge carrying material is an electron transport material.

18. The method of claim 15, wherein, after depositing the second charge carrying material, the second charge carrying material mixes with the first charge carrying material.

19. The method of claim 1, wherein the first small molecule organic material and the second small molecule organic material mix in a region that is at least 30 angstroms thick.

20. The method of claim 1, further comprising depositing a third organic layer between the first electrode and the second electrode.

21. The method of claim 1, wherein the device is incorporated into a display.

22. The method of claim 1, wherein the second small molecule organic material includes a substituent selected from the group consisting of aryl and alkyl having at least 3 carbon atoms.

23. The method of claim 1, wherein the second organic layer includes a dendrimer material.

24. A method of fabricating an organic light emitting device, comprising:

solution depositing a mixture of a first small molecule organic material and a second small molecule organic material over a first electrode, such that the first and second small molecule organic materials at least partially separate into first and second small molecule organic layers; and

depositing a second electrode over the first and second small molecule organic layers.
