Abstract

Systems, devices and methods for defining, identifying and using health-related significant events are disclosed. One aspect is a programmable device having machine executable instructions for performing a method to assist with managing a patient'"'"'s health. In various embodiments, at least one previously-defined event is detected based on a number of acquired health-related parameters. The at least one detected event is recorded with an associated time when the at least one detected significant event occurred. An action is triggered based on the at least one detected event. The at least one detected event is displayed with at least one trended health-related parameter in a single display area. Other aspects and embodiments are provided herein.

Claims

1. A programmable device having machine executable instructions for performing a method to assist with managing a patient'"'"'s health, the method comprising:

detecting at least one previously-defined event based on a number of acquired health-related parameters;

recording the at least one detected event with an associated time when the at least one detected event occurred; and

triggering at least one action based on the at least one detected event, wherein the at least one action includes displaying the at least one detected event with at least one trended health-related parameter in a single display area.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein the at least one previously-defined event includes a device therapy change that can affect a trended parameter.

3. The device of claim 2, wherein the at least one previously-defined event includes a physician-mediated device therapy change.

4. The device of claim 2, wherein the at least one previously-defined event includes a device-mediated device therapy change.

5. The device of claim 1, wherein the at least one previously-defined event includes a drug therapy change.

6. The device of claim 1, wherein the at least one previously-defined event includes an arrhythmic event.

7. The device of claim 1, wherein the at least one previously-defined event includes a clinically important change in the at least one trended health-related parameter.

8. The device of claim 1, wherein the at least one previously-defined event includes an autonomously-identified significant correlation between two or more trended health-related parameters.

9. The device of claim 1, wherein the at least one previously-defined event includes a predetermined set of events and providing a health care provider with an ability to modify the predetermined set of events.

10. The device of claim 9, wherein providing a health care provider with an ability to modify the predetermined set of events includes providing the health care provider with an ability to change a percentage threshold for one or more of the at least one trended health-related parameter to modify the predetermined set of events.

11. The device of claim 9, wherein providing a health care provider with an ability to modify the predetermined set of events includes providing the health care provider with an ability to change an absolute value threshold for one or more of the at least one trended health-related parameter to modify the predetermined set of events.

12. The device of claim 1, further comprising acquiring the number of acquired health-related parameters using at least one implantable medical device (IMD) sensor.

13. The device of claim 1, further comprising acquiring one or more of the number of acquired health-related parameters using at least one external sensor.

14. The device of claim 1, further comprising acquiring one or more of the number of acquired health-related parameters using at least one external data source.

15. The device of claim 1, further comprising acquiring one or more of the number of acquired health-related parameters using at least one manual data input.

16. The device of claim 1, further comprising acquiring the number of acquired health-related parameters using at least one implantable medical device (IMD) sensor and at least one of:

at least one external sensor;

at least one external data source; and

at least one manual data input.

17. The device of claim 1, wherein recording the at least one detected event with an associated time includes recording a time stamp for use in temporally comparing the at least one detected event with the at least one trended health-related parameter.

18. The device of claim 1, wherein triggering an action based on the at least one detected event further includes changing a device therapy based on the at least one detected event.

19. The device of claim 1, wherein triggering an action based on the at least one detected event further includes providing an alarm based on the at least one detected event.

20. The device of claim 1, wherein the number of acquired health-related parameters used to detect the at least one of the defined events includes the at least one trended health-related parameter displayed with the at least one detected event.

21. The device of claim 1, wherein the number of acquired health-related parameters used to detect the at least one of the defined events does not include the at least one trended health-related parameter displayed with the at least one detected event.

22. The device of claim 1, wherein the number of acquired health-related parameters includes at least one of an environmental parameter, a diet parameter, a mental/emotional parameter, a medication compliance parameter and a symptom parameter.

23. A device for monitoring a patient'"'"'s health condition, comprising:

a parameter acquisition module to acquire at least one health-related parameter; and

a predetermined event detection module to communicate with the parameter acquisition module to determine whether the at least one health-related parameter corresponds to at least one predetermined event.

24. The device of claim 23, wherein the device is a wellness monitoring device (WMD).

25. The device of claim 24, wherein the WMD includes a programmer for an implantable medical device.

26. The device of claim 24, wherein the WMD includes a portable phone.

27. The device of claim 24, wherein the WMD includes a computer.

28. The device of claim 24, wherein the WMD includes a personal digital assistant (PDA).

29. The device of claim 23, wherein the device is a implantable medical device (IMD).

30. The device of claim 23, wherein the at least one health-related parameter includes at least one health-related parameter from an implantable medical device (IMD) and at least one health-related parameter from an external data source.

31. The device of claim 23, further comprising an action trigger module to communicate with the predetermined event detection module to trigger a desired action based on a detected predetermined event.

32. A wellness monitoring device for monitoring a patient'"'"'s health condition, comprising:

a communication module to receive at least one health-related parameter;

a parameter acquisition module to communicate with the communication module to acquire the at least one health-related parameter;

an input module to receive manual input data;

a predetermined event definition module to communicate with the input module to define a number of predetermined events for the patient'"'"'s health condition using the manual input data;

a timer module; and

a predetermined event detection module to communicate with the parameter acquisition module and the predetermined event definition module to determine that the at least one health-related parameter corresponds to at least one of the number of predetermined events, and to communicate with the timer module to associate a time with the at least one of the number of predetermined events.

The device of claim 32, further comprising a predetermined event set module to communicate with the predetermined event definition module to define a set of predetermined events, wherein the input module is adapted to communicate with the predetermined event definition module to modify the set of predetermined events.

34. The device of claim 32, further comprising an action trigger module to communicate with the predetermined event detection module to trigger a desired action based on a detected predetermined event.

35. The device of claim 34, further comprising a display area, wherein the action trigger module is adapted to provide a signal to display the detected predetermined event along with a trend for the at least one health-related parameter on the display area.

36. The device of claim 34, wherein the action trigger module is adapted to provide a signal to send an alarm in response to the at least one detected predetermined event.

37. The device of claim 34, wherein the action trigger module is adapted to provide a signal to change device therapy in response to the at least one detected predetermined event.

38. The device of claim 32, wherein the manual input data further includes at least one manually-inputted health-related parameter, the parameter acquisition module to communicate with the input module to acquire the at least one manually-inputted health-related parameter.

39. The device of claim 38, wherein the parameter acquisition module is adapted to communicate with the communication module and the input module is adapted to acquire at least one of an environmental parameter, a diet parameter, a mental/emotional parameter, a medication compliance parameter and a symptom parameter.

40. The device of claim 32, wherein the communication module to receive at least one health-related parameter from an implantable medical device (IMD).

41. The device of claim 32, wherein the communication module to receive at least one health-related parameter from an external data source.

42. The device of claim 41, wherein the communication module to receive at least one health-related parameter from an external sensor.

43. The device of claim 41, wherein the communication module to receive at least one health-related parameter from patient history database.

44. The device of claim 41, wherein the communication module to receive at least one health-related parameter from a database suitable to be accessed through a global computer network.

45. A wellness monitoring device for monitoring a patient'"'"'s health condition, comprising:

means to acquire a number of health-related parameters;

means to detect a predetermined event for the patient'"'"'s health;

means to associate the detected significant event with a time; and

means to trigger at least one action based on the detected significant event, wherein the at least one action includes displaying at least one trended health-related parameter with the time of the detected significant event.

46. The device of claim 45, wherein the number of acquired health-related parameters used to detect the at least one of the defined significant events includes the at least one trended health-related parameter displayed with the at least one detected significant event.

47. The device of claim 45, wherein the number of acquired health-related parameters used to detect the at least one of the defined significant events does not include the at least one trended health-related parameter displayed with the at least one detected significant event.

48. The device of claim 45, wherein the number of acquired health-related parameters includes at least one of an environmental parameter, a diet parameter, a mental/emotional parameter, a medication compliance parameter and a symptom parameter.

49. A machine-readable medium with instructions stored thereon to assist with managing a patient'"'"'s health, the instructions when executed operable to perform a method, comprising:

detecting a previously-defined event for the patient'"'"'s health;

associating the detected event with a time; and

triggering at least one action based on the detected significant event, wherein the action includes displaying at least one trended health-related parameter with the time of the detected event in a single display area such that managing the patient'"'"'s health is assisted by visually relating the detected event with the at least one trended health-related parameter.

50. The machine-readable medium of claim 49, wherein the previously-defined event includes a device therapy change that can affect at least one trended health-related parameter.

51. The machine-readable medium of claim 49, wherein the previously-defined event includes a physician-mediated device therapy change.

52. The machine-readable medium of claim 49, wherein the previously-defined event includes a device-mediated therapy change.

53. The machine-readable medium of claim 49, wherein the previously-defined event includes a drug therapy change.

54. The machine-readable medium of claim 49, wherein the previously-defined event includes an arrhythmic event.

55. The machine-readable medium of claim 49, wherein the previously-defined event includes a clinically important change in the at least one trended health-related parameter.

56. The machine-readable medium of claim 49, wherein the previously-defined event includes an autonomously identified correlation between two or more trended health-related parameters.
