1. A method for automatic interpretation of system data utilized to create a policy document, said method comprising:
- filtering through each unknown event in a database of unknown events;
selectively determining which unknown events among all of the unknown events in a database should be considered for inclusion in said policy document; and
updating the policy document with event examples associated with the unknown events.

Abstract
A system and method for utilizing data mining to generate a policy document or to revise theory within a policy document. A data base of unknown events is mined for application to the development of a system management policy document. The results of the data mining of the database of unknown events are automatically incorporated into a policy document, subject to user approval, to produce a new policy document or an updated version of an existing policy document.

23. A method for data mining a database of unknown events to update policy document for use by a system administrator in a computer system, comprising:
generating a system log of unknown events;
parsing the events from the log into examples;
executing a clustering algorithm using the examples to generate clustered events;
executing a visualization tool using the clustered events to generate a view of clusters;
altering the algorithm in response to the view;
selecting examples from the clustered events;
executing a feature extractor in response to the selecting examples; and
updating a regular expression feature parser library and a data extractor in response to the executing.
