Abstract

The present invention is a safety-enhancing automatic brake control system that automatically applies and maintains the brakes in the applied state, in response to sensors at various stations around/in the vehicle or equipment that signal an invented controller when conditions exist that make vehicle movement potentially dangerous. The controller validates the signals and then actuates a mechanism that manages the air, brake fluid, or mechanical brake linkage/cable that applies the brakes. The control system preferably includes a vehicle motion override system that prevents automatic application of the brakes if the vehicle is in motion above a set speed, and a manual brake-releasing override that allows a driver to override the controller temporarily at the driver'"'"'s discretion.

Claims

1. A combination of a vehicle with a parking brake for preventing movement of the vehicle and a parking brake control system for the parking brake, the vehicle having a plurality of stations at which conditions are monitored by the control system to determine whether vehicle movement should be permitted, and a driver'"'"'s cab from which a driver operates the vehicle, and the control system comprising:

a management mechanism adapted to apply the parking brake to prevent vehicle movement from a stationary parked position;

a plurality of sensors at said stations in the vehicle adapted to sense conditions at the stations;

an electronic controller operatively connected to the management mechanism and to the plurality of sensors, wherein the controller is adapted to receive signals from the plurality of sensors and, in response to signals from the plurality of sensors indicating a condition that is unsafe for vehicle movement, to actuate the management mechanism to apply the parking brake to prevent vehicle movement if the parking brake is not already applied;

an operator switch mounted in the vehicle cab, the operator switch being electrically connected to said electronic controller, wherein the operator switch is adapted to be switched by the driver to a lock position wherein the switch electrically signals the electronic controller to actuate the management mechanism even if none of the said plurality of sensors indicate a condition that is unsafe for vehicle movement, and the operator switch is adapted to be switched by the driver to a release position wherein the switch electrically signals the electronic controller to cause the management system to release the parking brake only if said plurality of sensors do not indicate a condition that is unsafe for vehicle movement;

wherein the controller is adapted to maintain the parking brake in an applied condition until said plurality of sensors do not indicate a condition that is unsafe for vehicle movement and until said operator switch is switched by the driver to said release position;

wherein the controller comprises a signal validation circuit for preventing noise and defective sensors from causing the parking to be applied by the electronic controller, the validation circuit being adapted to validate signals from the sensor acceptance by the controller only if the signals arrive at the controller, uninterrupted, for a predetermined minimum duration of time; and

wherein the combination of vehicle and control system does not comprise a driver-operated handle mechanically connected to the management mechanism, so that said parking brake is controlled by said electronic controller and by said operator switch electrically connected to said electronic controller and is not controlled by a driver-operated handle mechanically connected to the management mechanism.

The combination of claim 1, wherein the parking brake is a spring-actuated air parking brake, and said management mechanism comprises an electric solenoid air valve in an air line to the spring-actuated air parking brake, so that the spring-actuated air parking brake is applied when the electronic controller electrically closes the solenoid air valve and so that the spring-actuated air parking brake is released when the electronic controller electrically opens the solenoid air valve.

3. The combination of claim 1, wherein said plurality of sensors are selected from a group consisting of:

a sensor adapted to sense equipment location at one of said stations, a sensor adapted to sense equipment movement at one of said stations, a sensor adapted to sense location of people at one of said stations, a sensor adapted to sense movement of people at one of said stations, a door switch that signals the controller if a door is not closed, a wheelchair lift switch that signals the controller if a wheelchair lift is in use, engine diagnostic sensors, vehicle diagnostic sensors, a sensor that signals the controller if a tire pressure is low, a sensor that signals the controller if engine oil pressure is low, an air low-pressure sensor adapted to sense low-pressure of an air brake air supply, a sensor that signals the controller if objects or people are close to the vehicle, a breath alcohol analyzer, and an access-code key-pad.

The combination of claim 1, wherein the vehicle has an ignition switch, and wherein the controller has a positive power input operatively connected to the ignition switch adapted so that opening the ignition switch shuts off power to the electronic controller, which causes the management mechanism to apply the parking brake.

7. The combination of claim 2, wherein the solenoid air valve comprises a vented solenoid valve adapted to block and vent the air line to the spring-actuated air parking brake, wherein the blocking and venting of said air line allows spring-actuation of the air parking brake.

25. The combination of claim 1, wherein one of said plurality of sensors is a vehicle motion sensor, and wherein the controller does not actuate the management mechanism to apply the brake if the vehicle motion sensor signals the controller that the vehicle is moving above a certain speed.

26. The combination of claim 1, wherein the predetermined minimum duration of time is within the range of 1 to 2 seconds.

28. The combination of claim 25, wherein the vehicle motion sensor is operatively connected to a speedometer pickup.

36. The combination of claim 1, wherein the vehicle comprises a hydraulic foundation brake system for slowing the vehicle during driving, the hydraulic foundation brake system comprising a brake mechanism at a vehicle wheel, a hydraulic master cylinder with a primary piston and a primary piton rod, and wherein said management mechanism of said parking brake control system comprises a secondary piston rod in the hydraulic master cylinder adapted to move the piston to increase hydraulic brake fluid pressure in the brake fluid line to apply the brake mechanism at the vehicle wheel as a parking brake,

and an actuator electrically connected to said electronic controller for powering the secondary piston rod.

37. The combination of claim 36, wherein the secondary piston rod is a sleeve slidably extending around the primary piston rod.

38. The combination of claim 1, wherein said vehicle does not comprise a hand-operated pull-on parking brake handle and does not comprise a foot-operated push-on parking brake pedal.

43. A combination of a vehicle with a parking brake for preventing movement of the vehicle and a parking brake control system for the parking brake, the vehicle having one of more stations at which conditions are monitored by the control system to determine whether vehicle movement should be permitted, and a driver'"'"'s cab from which a driver operates the vehicle, and the control system comprising:

a management mechanism adapted to apply the parking brake to prevent vehicle movement from a stationary parked position;

a sensor at each of said stations in the vehicle adapted to sense conditions at the stations;

an electronic controller operatively connected to the management mechanism and to the one or mor sensors, wherein the controller is adapted to receive signals from the one or more sensors and, in response to signals from the one or more of sensors indicating a condition that is unsafe for vehicle movement, to actuate the management mechanism to apply the parking brake to prevent vehicle movement if the parking brake is not already applied;

an operator switch mounted in the vehicle cab, the operator switch being electrically connected to said electronic controller, wherein the operator switch is adapted to be switched by the driver to a lock position wherein the switch electrically signals the electronic controller to actuate the management mechanism even if none of said one or more sensors indicate a condition that is unsafe for vehicle movement, and the operator switch is adapted to be switched by the driver to a release position wherein the switch electrically signals the electronic controller to cause the management system to release the parking brake only if said one or more sensors do not indicate a condition that is unsafe for vehicle movement;

wherein the controller is adapted to maintain the parking brake in an applied condition until said one or more sensors do not indicate a condition that is unsafe for vehicle movement and until said operator switch is switched by the driver to said release position;

wherein the controller comprises a signal validation circuit for preventing noise and defective sensors from causing the parking to be applied by the electronic controller, the validation circuit being adapted to validate signals from the one or more sensors for acceptance by the controller only if the signals arrive at the controller, uninterrupted, for a predetermined minimum duration of time; and

wherein the combination of vehicle and control system does not comprise a driver-operated handle mechanically connected to the management mechanism, so that said parking brake is controlled by said electronic controller and by said operator switch electrically connected to said electronic controller and is not controlled by a driver-operated handle mechanically connected to the management mechanism.

44. The combination of claim 43, wherein the parking brake is a spring-actuated air parking brake, and said management mechanism comprises an electric solenoid air valve in an air line to the spring-actuated air parking brake, so that the spring-actuated air parking brake is applied when the electronic controller electrically closes the solenoid air valve and so that the spring-actuated air parking brake is released when the electronic controller electrically opens the solenoid air valve.

45. The combination of claim 43, wherein said one or more sensors are selected from a group consisting of:

a sensor adapted to sense equipment location at one of said stations, a sensor adapted to sense equipment movement at one of said stations, a sensor adapted to sense location of people at one of said stations, a sensor adapted to sense movement of people at one of said stations, a door switch that signals the controller if a door is not closed, a wheelchair lift switch that signals the controller if a wheelchair lift is in use, engine diagnostic sensors, vehicle diagnostic sensors, a sensor that signal the controller if a tire pressure is low, a sensor that signals the controller if engine oil pressure is low, an air low-pressure sensor adapted to sense low-pressure of an air brake air supply, a sensor that signals the controller if objects or people are close to the vehicle, a breath alcohol analyzer, and an access-code key-pad.

46. The combination of claim 43, wherein the vehicle has an ignition switch, and wherein the controller has a positive power input operatively connected to the ignition switch adapted so that opening the ignition switch shuts off power to the electronic controller, which causes the management mechanism to apply the parking brake.

47. The combination of claim 44, wherein the solenoid air valve comprises a vented solenoid valve adapted to block and vent the air line to the spring-actuated air parking brake, wherein the blocking and venting of said air line allows spring-acutation of the air parking brake.

48. The combination of claim 43, wherein one of one or more of sensors is a vehicle motion sensors, and wherein the controller does not actuate the management mechanism to apply the brake if the vehicle motion sensor signals the controller that the vehicle is moving above a certain speed.

49. The combination of claim 43, wherein the predetermined minimum duration of time is within the range of 1 to 2 seconds.

50. The combination of claim 48, wherein the vehicle motion sensor is operatively connected to a speedometer pickup.

51. The combination of claim 43, wherein the vehicle comprises a hydraulic foundation brake system for slowing the vehicle during driving, the hydraulic foundation brake system comprising a brake mechanism at a vehicle wheel, a hydraulic master cylinder with a primary piston and a primary piston rod, and wherein said management mechanism of said parking brake-control system comprises a secondary piston rod in the hydraulic master cylinder adapted to move the piston to increase hydraulic brake fluid pressure in the brake fluid line to apply the brake mechanism at the vehicle wheel as a parking brake.

and an actuator electrically connected to said electronic controller for powering the secondary piston rod.

52. The combination of claim 51, wherein the secondary piston rod is a sleeve slidably extending around the primary piston rod.

53. The combination of claim 43, wherein said vehicle does not compise a hand-operated pull-on parking brake handle and does not comprise a foot-operatied push-on parking brake pedal.
