Abstract

The invention concerns a data transmission method in accordance with a communication protocol from a mobile station (10) consisting of a smart card (SIM) associated with a mobile host equipment (ME), said protocol being organised in several layers including at least a data transport layer of the datagram type adapted to transmit integrally data packets (D) of a maximum size (MDS). The invention is characterised in that said transmission method comprises a step which consists, for the card (SIM), in determining the value of said maximum size of data packets (MDS) capable of being integrally transmitted by the transport layer of its mobile host equipment (ME).

Claims

1. A method for transmitting data according to a communication protocol from a mobile station (10) composed of a smart card (SIM) associated with host mobile equipment (ME), the said protocol being organised in several layers, including at least one data transport layer of the datagram type able to transmit in their entirety data packets (D) of a maximum size (Maximum Datagram Size, MDS), characterised in that the said transmission protocol comprises a step consisting, for the card (SIM), in determining the value of the said maximum size of the data packets (MDS) able to be transmitted in their entirety by the transport layer of its host mobile equipment (ME).

2. A transmission method according to claim 1, characterised in that the value of the maximum size of the data packets (MDS) is indicated to the card (SIM) directly by its host mobile equipment (ME).

3. A transmission method according to claim 1, characterised in that the value of the maximum size of the data packets (MDS) is determined by the card (SIM) from the transmission of at least one (N≧

1) message (M_N) exchanged between the card (SIM) of the mobile station (10) and a calculation entity (50), the said messages (M_N) being of distinct lengths when their number is greater than or equal to two (N≧

2).

4. A transmission method according to claim 3, characterised in that the value of the maximum size of the data packets (MDS) is determined by means of the following steps:

sending of N messages (M_N) by the SIM card (SIM) each comprising a specific header (H_N) indicating at least one request for determining the maximum size of the data packets (MDS);

filtration, by the transport layer of the mobile equipment (ME) , of the messages (M_I) of length less than or equal to the maximum size of the data packets (MDS);

reception of the said filtered messages (M_I) which have kept the original specific header (H) and calculation of their respective length (L_I) by the calculation entity (50);

sending of the said lengths (L_I) calculated to the card (SIM) of the mobile station (10);

determination of the value of the said maximum size of the data packets (MDS) by the card (SIM) by comparison of the said calculated lengths (L_I).

5. A transmission method according to claims 3 to 4, characterised in that the calculation entity (50) is included in the smart card (SIM).

6. A transmission method according to claims 3 to 4, characterised in that the calculation entity (50) is included in a distant server (100) able to communicate with the mobile station (10).

7. A transmission method according to claim 6, characterised in that the server (100) is an OTA (Over The Air) communication gateway.

8. A transmission method according to claim 4, characterised in that the filtering of the transport layer of the host mobile equipment (ME) consists in rejecting the messages with a length exceeding the maximum size of the data packets (MDS).

A transmission method according to claim 4, characterised in that the filtering of the transport layer of the host mobile equipment (ME) consists in segmenting each message with a length exceeding the maximum size of the data packets (MDS) into a plurality of data packets (D_I), only one of which keeps the specific header (H_N) of the original message (M_N).

10. A method according to any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the protocol of the transport layer is the UDP protocol (User Datagram Protocol).

11. A method according to any one of claims 1 to 10, characterised in that the mobile station (10) is a cellular telephone.

12. A method according to any one of claims 1 to 10, characterised in that the mobile station (10) is a personal digital assistant (PDA).

A smart card (SIM) able to cooperate with host mobile equipment (ME) for communication according to a protocol organised in several layers, including at least one data transport layer of the datagram type able to transmit in their entirety data packets (D) of a maximum size (Maximum Datagram Size, MDS), characterised in that the, said card (SIM) comprises means able to extract the value of the said maximum size of the data packets (MDS) able to be transmitted in their entirety by the transport layer of its host mobile equipment (ME).
