- monitoring at least one of a plurality of optical signals to determine if said at least one monitored optical signals have been interrupted; and
in response to the interruption of said at least one monitored optical signal, replacing said at least one interrupted optical signal with at least one other optical signal.

Abstract
A method and apparatus for determining if an optical input signals has been interrupted and responsively replacing an interrupted optical input signal with a replacement optical signal having a similar optical profile (e.g., such as a loopback between OADMs within a backbone network), thereby insuring that transient-induced high speed optical amplifier adjustments are avoided.

a first optical add-drop multiplexer (OADM) for receiving a first input WDM traffic flow at an input and providing a first output WDM traffic flow at an output; and

23. An optical add-drop node, comprising:

a first optical add-drop multiplexer (OADM) for receiving a first input WDM traffic flow at an input and providing a first output WDM traffic flow at an output;
a second optical add-drop multiplexer (OADM) for receiving a second input WDM traffic flow at an input and providing a second output WDM traffic flow at an output; and
a switch, for replacing said first output WDM traffic flow with a portion of one of said second input WDM traffic flow and second output WDM traffic flow in response to a determination of an inappropriate power level of said first input WDM traffic flow.

24. A computer readable medium for storing instructions which, when executed by a processor, performs the steps of:
