Abstract

A user interface and methods for accessing document presentations are described herein. In one aspect of the invention, an exemplary method of the invention allows a user to directly snapback to a previous accessed document presentation without having to select from a menu of items or go through the intermediate pages. In this method, when a first document presentation is accessed, a first location of the first document presentation is recorded, automatically or manually. Subsequently, when a sequence of additional document presentations originated from the first document presentation is accessed, in response to a first input, without having to select from a menu of items, the first document presentation is directly retrieved from a recorded first location and displayed in a window. In one particular embodiment, a second document presentation is accessed and a second location of the second document presentation is recorded, where the recordation of the second location resets or supercedes the recordation of the first location. Other methods and apparatuses are also described.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

accessing a first document presentation other than a default initial document presentation;

recording a first location of the first document presentation;

accessing a sequence of additional document presentations originated from the first document presentation; and

in response to a first input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations, directly retrieving the first document presentation from the first location.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the first location is recorded when the first document presentation is accessed in response to an action selected from the group consisting of:

typing an address in an address field;

accessing a link from a document; and

selecting an item from a favorite list.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the first location is recorded in response to a user request.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising displaying a marker when the sequence of additional document presentations are accessed, wherein the first input is received via an activation of the marker.

5. The method of claim 4, further comprising removing the marker from the display when the first document presentation is retrieved.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

accessing a second document presentation; and

recording a second location of the second document presentation,

wherein the recordation of the second location causes the first location to be unrecorded.

7. The method of claim 6, further comprising:

accessing one or more third document presentations from the second document presentation; and

in response to the first input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations, directly retrieving the second document presentation from the recorded second location.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the first document presentation is accessed via a window, wherein the method further comprises:

receiving a search result from a search engine in response to a search request, the search result including a first and a second result pages;

displaying the first search result page in the window; and

recording a second location of the first search result page.

9. The method of claim 8, further comprising:

accessing a second document presentation from the first search result page;

in response to a second input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations, directly retrieving the first search result page from the recorded second location; and

redisplaying the first search result page in the window.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein after the first search result is redisplayed, the method further comprises:

in response to the first input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations, directly retrieving the first document presentation from the recorded first location; and

displaying the first document presentation in the window.

11. The method of claim 8, further comprising:

accessing the second search result page; and

recording a third location of the second search result page, wherein the recordation of the third location causes the second location of the first search result page to be unrecorded.

12. The method of claim 11, further comprising:

accessing a third document presentation other than the search result via the window;

in response to a second input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations, directly retrieving the second search result page from the recorded third location; and

displaying the second search result page in the window.

13. A method, comprising:

automatically recording a location of a first document presentation when the first document presentation is accessed via certain predetermined methods which includes entering an address into an address field;

accessing at least one second document presentation from the first document presentation; and

in response to an input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations, directly retrieving the first document presentation from the location.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the certain predetermined methods further includes accessing the first document presentation from a predefined favorite document list.

15. The method of claim 13, further comprising displaying a marker when the at least one second document presentation is accessed, wherein the input is received via an activation of the marker.

16. The method of claim 15, further comprising removing the marker when the first document presentation is retrieved.

17. A method, comprising:

accessing a first document presentation from a first location, the first location being recorded, the first document presentation being displayed within a window;

accessing a second document presentation which is displayed within the window; and

recording a second location of the second document presentation, wherein the recordation of the second location causes the first location to be unrecorded.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein the second location of the second document presentation is recorded when the second document presentation is accessed via typing an address into an address field or via a selection from a bookmark.

19. The method of claim 17, wherein the second location of the second document presentation is recorded in response to a user request.

20. The method of claim 17, further comprising:

accessing a third document presentation originated from the second document presentation; and

in response to an input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations, directly retrieving the second document presentation from the recorded second location.

21. A method, comprising:

recognizing a search result document presented via a window;

recording a location of the recognized search result document;

accessing a linked document from the search result document within the window; and

in response to an input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations, directly retrieving the search result document from the recorded location.

22. The method of claim 21, wherein the search result document is recognized based on a predefined template.

23. The method of claim 21, wherein the search result document is recognized based on a configuration of a search engine.

24. The method of claim 21, wherein the location is automatically recorded upon receiving the search result document from a search engine.

25. The method of claim 24, wherein the search result document is generated based on a search request entered into a search field within the window.

26. The method of claim 21, further comprising displaying a marker in the window when a linked document is accessed, wherein the input is received via an activation of the marker.

27. The method of claim 26, further comprising removing the marker from the window when the search result document is redisplayed in the window.

28. A method, comprising:

recording a location of a first document presentation when the first document presentation is accessed via a window;

performing a search and displaying a search result within the window; and

in response to a first input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations, directly retrieving the first document presentation from the location.

29. The method of claim 28, further comprising:

recording a second location of the search result;

accessing a third document from the search result;

in response to a second input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations, directly retrieving the search result from the second location; and

redisplaying the search result within the window;

30. The method of claim 29, further comprising:

in response to a first input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations, directly retrieving the first document from the first location; and

redisplaying the first document within the window.

31. The method of claim 29, further comprising:

displaying a first marker, wherein the first input is received via an activation of the first marker; and

displaying a second marker, wherein the second input is received via an activation of the second marker.

32. The method of claim 31, further comprising removing the first marker from the display when the first document presentation is redisplayed.

33. The method of claim 31, further comprising removing the second marker from the display when the search result is redisplayed.

34. A method, comprising:

receiving a search result from a search engine in response to a search request, the search result including a first search result page and a second search result page;

recording a first location of the first search result page when the first search result page is accessed via a window; and

recording a second location of the second search result page when the second search result page is accessed via the window, wherein the recordation of the second location causes the first location to be unrecorded.

35. The method of claim 34, further comprising:

accessing a linked document from the second search result page;

in response to an input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations, directly retrieving the second search result page; and

displaying the second search result page in the window.

36. The method of claim 34, further comprising:

accessing a document presentation other than the search result;

in response to an input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations, directly retrieving the second search result page from the recorded second location; and

displaying the retrieved second search result page within the window.

37. The method of claim 36, further comprising displaying a marker when the document presentation is accessed.

38. The method of claim 37, further comprising removing the marker from the display when the second search result page is retrieved.

39. The method of claim 37, further comprising automatically recording a third location of the document presentation when the document presentation is accessed via certain predetermined methods.

40. A method in a computer controlled display system, the method comprising:

setting a location of a first document presentation in a window based on a predetermined action;

displaying further document presentations originating from the first document presentation;

displaying the first document presentation from the location in response to an input without having to select from a menu of document presentations and without having to go back in sequence through the further document presentations; and

resetting the location after the window is closed.

41. The method of claim 40, wherein the first document presentation and the further document presentations are each Web pages.

42. The method of claim 40, further comprising:

opening a new window;

accessing a new document presentation; and

setting a new location for the new document presentation.

43. The method of claim 40, wherein the resetting comprises one of (a) deleting the location;

or (b) disabling the ability to display the first document presentation in response to the input.

44. A method to represent a previously presented presentation on a data processing system, the method comprising:

presenting a first document presentation with a window having controls to control the presentation;

recording a resettable location for the first document presentation, the resettable location being associated with the window, the recording being triggered by an event of a predetermined nature which is in addition to the presenting of the first document presentation;

presenting further document presentations after the presenting of the first document presentation;

presenting again, in response to an input, the first document presentation after the presenting of the further document presentations; and

resetting the resettable location in response to another event of a predetermined nature.

45. The method of claim 44, wherein the input is without having to select from a menu which includes the further document presentations and without having to go back in sequence through the further document presentations.

46. The method of claim 44, wherein the first document presentation is one of:

(a) a Web page;

(b) a search result page;

(c) a musical audio selection;

or (d) a motion picture selection.

47. The method of claim 44, wherein the event comprises at least one of:

(a) typing an address in a field;

(b) selecting a bookmark/favorite from a menu;

(c) receiving a user input requesting the recording of the resettable location;

or (d) determining the first document presentation is a search result.

48. The method of claim 44, wherein at least one of the further document presentations originated from the first document presentation.

49. The method of claim 44, wherein the another event of a predetermined nature is one of:

(a) typing an address in a field;

(b) selecting a bookmark/favorite from a menu;

(c) receiving a user input requesting the resetting of the resettable location;

(d) closing the window;

or (e) determining one of the further document presentation is a search result.

50. The method of claim 44, further comprises:

displaying another window in conjunction with a second document presentation; and

recording a further resettable location for the second document presentation, the further resettable location being associated with the another window,

wherein the resettable location and the further resettable are concurrently and independently accessible from their respective windows.

51. The method of claim 50, wherein the recording of the further resettable location is triggered by an event of a predetermined nature which is not merely presenting the second document presentation.

52. A method, comprising:

maintaining a plurality of recorded locations of a plurality of document presentations;

displaying one or more further document presentations; and

displaying a document presentation corresponding to one of the plurality of recorded locations in response to an input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations and without having to go back in sequence through the further document presentations.

53. The method of claim 52, wherein the plurality of recorded locations are maintained in a first-in-last-out (FILO) manner.

54. The method of claim 52, further comprising resetting the second recorded location when the second document presentation is displayed.

55. The method of claim 54, further comprising displaying a first document presentation from a first recorded location in response to a first input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations and without having to go back in sequence through one or more intermediate document presentations between the first and second document presentations.

56. The method of claim 55, wherein the first and second inputs are received via an identical mechanism.

57. The method of claim 55, wherein the first and second inputs are received via different mechanisms.

58. The method of claim 52, further comprising storing the plurality of recorded locations in a first-in-last-out (FILO) queue.

59. A method for navigating a file system, the method comprising:

recording a location of a first storage image when the first storage image is displayed in a window;

displaying a second storage image in the window; and

redisplaying a first storage image in the window in response to an input, without having to select from a menu of directories.

60. The method of claim 59, wherein the first and second storage images are referred to an identical storage media.

61. The method of claim 59, wherein the first and second storage images are referred to different storage medias.

62. The method of claim 61, wherein the first and second storage images are distributed to one or more remote storage locations over a network.

63. A machine-readable medium having executable code to cause a machine to perform a method, the method comprising:

accessing a first document presentation other than a default initial document presentation;

recording a first location of the first document presentation;

accessing a sequence of additional document presentations originated from the first document presentation; and

in response to a first input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations, directly retrieving the first document presentation from the first location.

64. The machine-readable medium of claim 63, wherein the first location is recorded when the first document presentation is accessed in response to an action selected from the group consisting of:

typing an address in an address field;

accessing a link from a document; and

selecting an item from a favorite list.

65. The machine-readable medium of claim 63, wherein the first location is recorded in response to a user request.

66. The machine-readable medium of claim 63, wherein the method further comprises displaying a marker when the sequence of additional document presentations are accessed, wherein the first input is received via an activation of the marker.

67. The machine-readable medium of claim 66, wherein the method further comprises removing the marker from the display when the first document presentation is retrieved.

68. The machine-readable medium of claim 63, wherein the method further comprises:

accessing a second document presentation; and

recording a second location of the second document presentation,

wherein the recordation of the second location causes the first location to be unrecorded.

69. The machine-readable medium of claim 68, wherein the method further comprises:

accessing one or more third document presentations from the second document presentation; and

in response to the first input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations, directly retrieving the second document presentation from the recorded second location.

70. The machine-readable medium of claim 63, wherein the first document presentation is accessed via a window, wherein the method further comprises:

receiving a search result from a search engine in response to a search request, the search result including a first and a second result pages;

displaying the first search result page in the window; and

recording a second location of the first search result page.

71. The machine-readable medium of claim 70, wherein the method further comprises:

accessing a second document presentation from the first search result page;

in response to a second input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations, directly retrieving the first search result page from the recorded second location; and

redisplaying the first search result page in the window.

72. The machine-readable medium of claim 71, wherein after the first search result is redisplayed, the method further comprises:

in response to the first input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations, directly retrieving the first document presentation from the recorded first location; and

displaying the first document presentation in the window.

73. The machine-readable medium of claim 70, wherein the method further comprises:

accessing the second search result page; and

recording a third location of the second search result page, wherein the recordation of the third location causes the second location of the first search result page to be unrecorded.

74. The machine-readable medium of claim 73, wherein the method further comprises:

accessing a third document presentation other than the search result via the window;

in response to a second input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations, directly retrieving the second search result page from the recorded third location; and

displaying the second search result page in the window.

77. The machine-readable medium of claim 72, wherein the method further comprises displaying a marker when the at least one second document presentation is accessed, wherein the input is received via an activation of the marker.

78. The machine-readable medium of claim 77, wherein the method further comprises removing the marker when the first document presentation is retrieved.

75. A machine-readable medium having executable code to cause a machine to perform a method, the method comprising:

automatically recording a location of a first document presentation when the first document presentation is accessed via certain predetermined methods which includes entering an address into an address field;

accessing at least one second document presentation from the first document presentation; and

in response to an input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations, directly retrieving the first document presentation from the location.

76. The machine-readable medium of claim 75, wherein the certain predetermined methods further includes accessing the first document presentation from a predefined favorite document list.

79. A machine-readable medium having executable code to cause a machine to perform a method, the method comprising:

accessing a first document presentation from a first location, the first location being recorded, the first document presentation being displayed within a window;

accessing a second document presentation which is displayed within the window; and

recording a second location of the second document presentation, wherein the recordation of the second location causes the first location to be unrecorded.

80. The machine-readable medium of claim 79, wherein the second location of the second document presentation is recorded when the second document presentation is accessed via typing an address into an address field or via a selection from a bookmark.

81. The machine-readable medium of claim 79, wherein the second location of the second document presentation is recorded in response to a user request.

82. The machine-readable medium of claim 79, wherein the method further comprises:

accessing a third document presentation originated from the second document presentation; and

in response to an input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations, directly retrieving the second document presentation from the recorded second location.

83. A machine-readable medium having executable code to cause a machine to perform a method, the method comprising:

recognizing a search result document presented via a window;

recording a location of the recognized search result document;

accessing a linked document from the search result document within the window; and

in response to an input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations, directly retrieving the search result document from the recorded location.

84. The machine-readable medium of claim 83, wherein the search result document is recognized based on a predefined template.

85. The machine-readable medium of claim 83, wherein the search result document is recognized based on a configuration of a search engine.

86. The machine-readable medium of claim 83, wherein the location is automatically recorded upon receiving the search result document from a search engine.

87. The machine-readable medium of claim 86, wherein the search result document is generated based on a search request entered into a search field within the window.

88. The machine-readable medium of claim 83, wherein the method further comprises displaying a marker in the window when a linked document is accessed, wherein the input is received via an activation of the marker.

89. The machine-readable medium of claim 88, wherein the method further comprises removing the marker from the window when the search result document is redisplayed in the window.

90. A machine-readable medium having executable code to cause a machine to perform a method, the method comprising:

recording a location of a first document presentation when the first document presentation is accessed via a window;

performing a search and displaying a search result within the window; and

in response to a first input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations, directly retrieving the first document presentation from the location.

91. The machine-readable medium of claim 90, wherein the method further comprises:

recording a second location of the search result;

accessing a third document from the search result;

in response to a second input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations, directly retrieving the search result from the second location; and

redisplaying the search result within the window;

92. The machine-readable medium of claim 91, wherein the method further comprises:

in response to a first input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations, directly retrieving the first document from the first location; and

redisplaying the first document within the window.

93. The machine-readable medium of claim 91, wherein the method further comprises:

displaying a first marker, wherein the first input is received via an activation of the first marker; and

displaying a second marker, wherein the second input is received via an activation of the second marker.

94. The machine-readable medium of claim 93, wherein the method further comprises removing the first marker from the display when the first document presentation is redisplayed.

95. The machine-readable medium of claim 93, wherein the method further comprises removing the second marker from the display when the search result is redisplayed.

96. A machine-readable medium having executable code to cause a machine to perform a method, the method comprising:

receiving a search result from a search engine in response to a search request, the search result including a first search result page and a second search result page;

recording a first location of the first search result page when the first search result page is accessed via a window; and

recording a second location of the second search result page when the second search result page is accessed via the window, wherein the recordation of the second location causes the first location to be unrecorded.

97. The machine-readable medium of claim 96, wherein the method further comprises:

accessing a linked document from the second search result page;

in response to an input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations, directly retrieving the second search result page; and

displaying the second search result page in the window.

98. The machine-readable medium of claim 96, wherein the method further comprises:

accessing a document presentation other than the search result;

in response to an input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations, directly retrieving the second search result page from the recorded second location; and

displaying the retrieved second search result page within the window.

99. The machine-readable medium of claim 98, wherein the method further comprises displaying a marker when the document presentation is accessed.

100. The machine-readable medium of claim 99, wherein the method further comprises removing the marker from the display when the second search result page is retrieved.

101. The machine-readable medium of claim 99, wherein the method further comprises automatically recording a third location of the document presentation when the document presentation is accessed via certain predetermined methods.

102. A machine-readable medium having executable code to cause a machine to perform a method in a computer controlled display system, the method comprising:

setting a location of a first document presentation in a window based on a predetermined action;

displaying further document presentations originating from the first document presentation;

displaying the first document presentation from the location in response to an input without having to select from a menu of document presentations and without having to go back in sequence through the further document presentations; and

resetting the location after the window is closed.

103. The machine-readable medium of claim 102, wherein the first document presentation and the further document presentations are each Web pages.

104. The machine-readable medium of claim 102, wherein the method further comprises:

opening a new window;

accessing a new document presentation; and

setting a new location for the new document presentation.

105. The machine-readable medium of claim 102, wherein the resetting comprises one of (a) deleting the location;

or (b) disabling the ability to display the first document presentation in response to the input.

106. A machine-readable medium having executable code to cause a machine to perform a method to represent a previously presented presentation on a data processing system, the method comprising:

presenting a first document presentation with a window having controls to control the presentation;

recording a resettable location for the first document presentation, the resettable location being associated with the window, the recording being triggered by an event of a predetermined nature which is in addition to the presenting of the first document presentation;

presenting further document presentations after the presenting of the first document presentation;

presenting again, in response to an input, the first document presentation after the presenting of the further document presentations; and

resetting the resettable location in response to another event of a predetermined nature.

107. The machine-readable medium of claim 106, wherein the input is without having to select from a menu which includes the further document presentations and without having to go back in sequence through the further document presentations.

108. The machine-readable medium of claim 106, wherein the first document presentation is one of:

(a) a Web page;

(b) a search result page;

(c) a musical audio selection;

or (d) a motion picture selection.

109. The machine-readable medium of claim 106, wherein the event comprises at least one of:

(a) typing an address in a field;

(b) selecting a bookmark/favorite from a menu;

(c) receiving a user input requesting the recording of the resettable location;

or (d) determining the first document presentation is a search result.

110. The machine-readable medium of claim 106, wherein at least one of the further document presentations originated from the first document presentation.

111. The machine-readable medium of claim 106, wherein the another event of a predetermined nature is one of:

(a) typing an address in a field;

(b) selecting a bookmark/favorite from a menu;

(c) receiving a user input requesting the resetting of the resettable location;

(d) closing the window;

or (e) determining one of the further document presentation is a search result.

112. The machine-readable medium of claim 106, wherein the method further comprises:

displaying another window in conjunction with a second document presentation; and

recording a further resettable location for the second document presentation, the further resettable location being associated with the another window,

wherein the resettable location and the further resettable are concurrently and independently accessible from their respective windows.

113. The machine-readable medium of claim 112, wherein the recording of the further resettable location is triggered by an event of a predetermined nature which is not merely presenting the second document presentation.

114. A machine-readable medium having executable code to cause a machine to perform a method, the method comprising:

maintaining a plurality of recorded locations of a plurality of document presentations;

displaying one or more further document presentations; and

displaying a document presentation corresponding to one of the plurality of recorded locations in response to an input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations and without having to go back in sequence through the further document presentations.

115. The machine-readable medium of claim 114, wherein the plurality of recorded locations are maintained in a first-in-last-out (FILO) manner.

116. The machine-readable medium of claim 114, wherein the method further comprises resetting the second recorded location when the second document presentation is displayed.

117. The machine-readable medium of claim 116, wherein the method further comprises displaying a first document presentation from a first recorded location in response to a first input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations and without having to go back in sequence through one or more intermediate document presentations between the first and second document presentations.

118. The machine-readable medium of claim 117, wherein the first and second inputs are received via an identical mechanism.

119. The machine-readable medium of claim 117, wherein the first and second inputs are received via different mechanisms.

120. The machine-readable medium of claim 114, wherein the method further comprises storing the plurality of recorded locations in a first-in-last-out (FILO) queue.

121. A machine-readable medium having executable code to cause a machine to perform a method for navigating a file system, the method comprising:

recording a location of a first storage image when the first storage image is displayed in a window;

displaying a second storage image in the window; and

redisplaying a first storage image in the window in response to an input, without having to select from a menu of directories.

122. The machine-readable medium of claim 121, wherein the first and second storage images are referred to an identical storage media.

123. The machine-readable medium of claim 121, wherein the first and second storage images are referred to different storage medias.

124. The machine-readable medium of claim 123, wherein the first and second storage images are distributed to one or more remote storage locations over a network.

125. An apparatus, comprising:

means for accessing a first document presentation other than a default initial document presentation;

means for recording a first location of the first document presentation;

means for accessing a sequence of additional document presentations originated from the first document presentation; and

in response to a first input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations, means for directly retrieving the first document presentation from the first location.

126. The apparatus of claim 125, wherein the first location is recorded when the first document presentation is accessed in response to an action selected from the group consisting of:

typing an address in an address field;

accessing a link from a document; and

selecting an item from a favorite list.

127. The apparatus of claim 125, wherein the first location is recorded in response to a user request.

128. The apparatus of claim 125, further comprising means for displaying a marker when the sequence of additional document presentations are accessed, wherein the first input is received via an activation of the marker.

129. The apparatus of claim 128, further comprising means for removing the marker from the display when the first document presentation is retrieved.

130. The apparatus of claim 125, further comprising:

means for accessing a second document presentation; and

means for recording a second location of the second document presentation,

wherein the recordation of the second location causes the first location to be unrecorded.

131. The apparatus of claim 130, further comprising:

means for accessing one or more third document presentations from the second document presentation; and

in response to the first input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations, means for directly retrieving the second document presentation from the recorded second location.

132. The apparatus of claim 125, wherein the first document presentation is accessed via a window, wherein the apparatus further comprises:

means for receiving a search result from a search engine in response to a search request, the search result including a first and a second result pages;

means for displaying the first search result page in the window; and

means for recording a second location of the first search result page.

133. The apparatus of claim 132, further comprising:

means for accessing a second document presentation from the first search result page;

in response to a second input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations, means for directly retrieving the first search result page from the recorded second location; and

means for redisplaying the first search result page in the window.

134. The apparatus of claim 133, wherein after the first search result is redisplayed, the apparatus further comprises:

in response to the first input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations, means for directly retrieving the first document presentation from the recorded first location; and

means for displaying the first document presentation in the window.

135. The apparatus of claim 132, further comprising:

means for accessing the second search result page; and

means for recording a third location of the second search result page, wherein the recordation of the third location causes the second location of the first search result page to be unrecorded.

136. The apparatus of claim 135, further comprising:

means for accessing a third document presentation other than the search result via the window;

in response to a second input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations, means for directly retrieving the second search result page from the recorded third location; and

means for displaying the second search result page in the window.

137. An apparatus, comprising:

means for automatically recording a location of a first document presentation when the first document presentation is accessed via certain predetermined methods which includes entering an address into an address field;

means for accessing at least one second document presentation from the first document presentation; and

in response to an input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations, means for directly retrieving the first document presentation from the location.

138. The apparatus of claim 137, wherein the certain predetermined methods further includes accessing the first document presentation from a predefined favorite document list.

139. The apparatus of claim 137, further comprising means for displaying a marker when the at least one second document presentation is accessed, wherein the input is received via an activation of the marker.

140. The apparatus of claim 139, further comprising means for removing the marker when the first document presentation is retrieved.

141. An apparatus, comprising:

means for accessing a first document presentation from a first location, the first location being recorded, the first document presentation being displayed within a window;

means for accessing a second document presentation which is displayed within the window; and

means for recording a second location of the second document presentation, wherein the recordation of the second location causes the first location to be unrecorded.

142. The apparatus of claim 141, wherein the second location of the second document presentation is recorded when the second document presentation is accessed via typing an address into an address field or via a selection from a bookmark.

143. The apparatus of claim 141, wherein the second location of the second document presentation is recorded in response to a user request.

144. The apparatus of claim 141, further comprising:

means for accessing a third document presentation originated from the second document presentation; and

in response to an input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations, means for directly retrieving the second document presentation from the recorded second location.

145. An apparatus, comprising:

means for recognizing a search result document presented via a window;

means for recording a location of the recognized search result document;

means for accessing a linked document from the search result document within the window; and

in response to an input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations, means for directly retrieving the search result document from the recorded location.

146. The apparatus of claim 145, wherein the search result document is recognized based on a predefined template.

147. The apparatus of claim 145, wherein the search result document is recognized based on a configuration of a search engine.

148. The apparatus of claim 145, wherein the location is automatically recorded upon receiving the search result document from a search engine.

149. The apparatus of claim 148, wherein the search result document is generated based on a search request entered into a search field within the window.

150. The apparatus of claim 145, further comprising means for displaying a marker in the window when a linked document is accessed, wherein the input is received via an activation of the marker.

151. The apparatus of claim 150, further comprising means for removing the marker from the window when the search result document is redisplayed in the window.

152. An apparatus, comprising:

means for recording a location of a first document presentation when the first document presentation is accessed via a window;

means for performing a search and displaying a search result within the window; and

in response to a first input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations, means for directly retrieving the first document presentation from the location.

153. The apparatus of claim 152, further comprising:

means for recording a second location of the search result;

means for accessing a third document from the search result;

in response to a second input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations, means for directly retrieving the search result from the second location; and

means for redisplaying the search result within the window;

154. The apparatus of claim 153, further comprising:

in response to a first input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations, means for directly retrieving the first document from the first location; and

means for redisplaying the first document within the window.

155. The apparatus of claim 153, further comprising:

means for displaying a first marker, wherein the first input is received via an activation of the first marker; and

means for displaying a second marker, wherein the second input is received via an activation of the second marker.

156. The apparatus of claim 155, further comprising means for removing the first marker from the display when the first document presentation is redisplayed.

157. The apparatus of claim 155, further comprising means for removing the second marker from the display when the search result is redisplayed.

158. An apparatus, comprising:

means for receiving a search result from a search engine in response to a search request, the search result including a first search result page and a second search result page;

means for recording a first location of the first search result page when the first search result page is accessed via a window; and

means for recording a second location of the second search result page when the second search result page is accessed via the window, wherein the recordation of the second location causes the first location to be unrecorded.

159. The apparatus of claim 158, further comprising:

means for accessing a linked document from the second search result page;

in response to an input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations, means for directly retrieving the second search result page; and

means for displaying the second search result page in the window.

160. The apparatus of claim 158, further comprising:

means for accessing a document presentation other than the search result;

in response to an input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations, means for directly retrieving the second search result page from the recorded second location; and

means for displaying the retrieved second search result page within the window.

161. The apparatus of claim 160, further comprising means for displaying a marker when the document presentation is accessed.

162. The apparatus of claim 161, further comprising means for removing the marker from the display when the second search result page is retrieved.

163. The apparatus of claim 161, further comprising means for automatically recording a third location of the document presentation when the document presentation is accessed via certain predetermined methods.

164. An apparatus in a computer controlled display system, the apparatus comprising:

means for setting a location of a first document presentation in a window based on a predetermined action;

means for displaying further document presentations originating from the first document presentation;

means for displaying the first document presentation from the location in response to an input without having to select from a menu of document presentations and without having to go back in sequence through the further document presentations; and

means for resetting the location after the window is closed.

165. The apparatus of claim 164, wherein the first document presentation and the further document presentations are each Web pages.

166. The apparatus of claim 164, further comprising:

means for opening a new window;

means for accessing a new document presentation; and

means for setting a new location for the new document presentation.

167. The apparatus of claim 164, wherein the resetting comprises one of (a) deleting the location;

or (b) disabling the ability to display the first document presentation in response to the input.

168. A apparatus to represent a previously presented presentation on a data processing system, the apparatus comprising:

means for presenting a first document presentation with a window having controls to control the presentation;

means for recording a resettable location for the first document presentation, the resettable location being associated with the window, the recording being triggered by an event of a predetermined nature which is in addition to the presenting of the first document presentation;

means for presenting further document presentations after the presenting of the first document presentation;

means for presenting again, in response to an input, the first document presentation after the presenting of the further document presentations; and

means for resetting the resettable location in response to another event of a predetermined nature.

169. The apparatus of claim 168, wherein the input is without having to select from a menu which includes the further document presentations and without having to go back in sequence through the further document presentations.

170. The apparatus of claim 168, wherein the first document presentation is one of:

(a) a Web page;

(b) a search result page;

(c) a musical audio selection;

or (d) a motion picture selection.

171. The apparatus of claim 168, wherein the event comprises at least one of:

(a) typing an address in a field;

(b) selecting a bookmark/favorite from a menu;

(c) receiving a user input requesting the recording of the resettable location;

or (d) determining the first document presentation is a search result.

172. The apparatus of claim 168, wherein at least one of the further document presentations originated from the first document presentation.

173. The apparatus of claim 168, wherein the another event of a predetermined nature is one of:

(a) typing an address in a field;

(b) selecting a bookmark/favorite from a menu;

(c) receiving a user input requesting the resetting of the resettable location;

(d) closing the window;

or (e) determining one of the further document presentation is a search result.

174. The apparatus of claim 168, further comprises:

means for displaying another window in conjunction with a second document presentation; and

means for recording a further resettable location for the second document presentation, the further resettable location being associated with the another window,

wherein the resettable location and the further resettable are concurrently and independently accessible from their respective windows.

175. The apparatus of claim 174, wherein the recording of the further resettable location is triggered by an event of a predetermined nature which is not merely presenting the second document presentation.

176. An apparatus, comprising:

means for maintaining a plurality of recorded locations of a plurality of document presentations;

means for displaying one or more further document presentations; and

means for displaying a document presentation corresponding to one of the plurality of recorded locations in response to an input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations and without having to go back in sequence through the further document presentations.

177. The apparatus of claim 176, wherein the plurality of recorded locations are maintained in a first-in-last-out (FILO) manner.

178. The apparatus of claim 176, further comprising means for resetting the second recorded location when the second document presentation is displayed.

The apparatus of claim 178, further comprising means for displaying a first document presentation from a first recorded location in response to a first input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations and without having to go back in sequence through one or more intermediate document presentations between the first and second document presentations.

180. The apparatus of claim 179, wherein the first and second inputs are received via an identical mechanism.

181. The apparatus of claim 179, wherein the first and second inputs are received via different mechanisms.

182. The apparatus of claim 176, further comprising means for storing the plurality of recorded locations in a first-in-last-out (FILO) queue.

183. An apparatus for navigating a file system, the apparatus comprising:

means for recording a location of a first storage image when the first storage image is displayed in a window;

means for displaying a second storage image in the window; and

means for redisplaying a first storage image in the window in response to an input, without having to select from a menu of directories.

184. The apparatus of claim 183, wherein the first and second storage images are referred to an identical storage media.

185. The apparatus of claim 183, wherein the first and second storage images are referred to different storage medias.

186. The apparatus of claim 185, wherein the first and second storage images are distributed to one or more remote storage locations over a network.

187. A method for accessing presentations, comprising:

accessing a first presentation page having a first location of the first presentation page which is recorded;

conducting a search and receiving a search result from a search facility; and

recording a second location of the search result, wherein the recordation of the second location resets the recorded first location.

188. The method of claim 187, wherein the first location is recorded via a first snapback functionality and the second location is recorded via a second snapback functionality, wherein the recordation of the second location disables the first snapback functionality.

189. The method of claim 188, further comprising:

accessing a second presentation page; and

recording a third location of the second presentation page, wherein the recordation of the third location enables the first snapback functionality.

190. A machine-readable medium having executable code to cause a machine to perform a method, the method comprising:

accessing a first presentation page having a first location of the first presentation page which is recorded;

conducting a search and receiving a search result from a search facility; and

recording a second location of the search result, wherein the recordation of the second location resets the recorded first location.

191. The machine-readable medium of claim 190, wherein the first location is recorded via a first snapback functionality and the second location is recorded via a second snapback functionality, wherein the recordation of the second location disables the first snapback functionality.

192. The machine-readable medium of claim 191, wherein the method further comprises:

accessing a second presentation page; and

recording a third location of the second presentation page, wherein the recordation of the third location enables the first snapback functionality.

193. An apparatus for accessing presentations, comprising:

means for accessing a first presentation page having a first location of the first presentation page which is recorded;

means for conducting a search and receiving a search result from a search facility; and

means for recording a second location of the search result, wherein the recordation of the second location resets the recorded first location.

194. The apparatus of claim 193, wherein the first location is recorded via a first snapback functionality and the second location is recorded via a second snapback functionality, wherein the recordation of the second location disables the first snapback functionality.

195. The apparatus of claim 194, further comprising:

means for accessing a second presentation page; and

means for recording a third location of the second presentation page, wherein the recordation of the third location enables the first snapback functionality.

196. A data processing system, comprising:

a processor; and

a memory coupled to the processor to store instructions that causes the processor to perform the operations of;

accessing a first presentation page having a first location of the first presentation page which is recorded;

conducting a search and receiving a search result from a search facility; and

recording a second location of the search result, wherein the recordation of the second location resets the recorded first location.

197. A data processing system, comprising:

a processor; and

a memory coupled to the processor to store instructions that causes the processor to perform the operations of;

accessing a first document presentation other than a default initial document presentation,

recording a first location of the first document presentation,

accessing a sequence of additional document presentations originated from the first document presentation, and

in response to a first input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations, directly retrieving the first document presentation from the first location.

198. A data processing system, comprising:

a processor; and

a memory coupled to the processor to store instructions that causes the processor to perform the operations of;

automatically recording a location of a first document presentation when the first document presentation is accessed via certain predetermined methods which includes entering an address into an address field,

accessing at least one second document presentation from the first document presentation, and

in response to an input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations, directly retrieving the first document presentation from the location.

199. A data processing system, comprising:

a processor; and

a memory coupled to the processor to store instructions that causes the processor to perform the operations of;

accessing a first document presentation from a first location, the first location being recorded, the first document presentation being displayed within a window,

accessing a second document presentation which is displayed within the window, and

recording a second location of the second document presentation, wherein the recordation of the second location causes the first location to be unrecorded.

200. A data processing system, comprising:

a processor; and

a memory coupled to the processor to store instructions that causes the processor to perform the operations of;

recognizing a search result document presented via a window,

recording a location of the recognized search result document,

accessing a linked document from the search result document within the window, and

in response to an input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations, directly retrieving the search result document from the recorded location.

201. A data processing system, comprising:

a processor; and

a memory coupled to the processor to store instructions that causes the processor to perform the operations of;

recording a location of a first document presentation when the first document presentation is accessed via a window,

performing a search and displaying a search result within the window, and

in response to a first input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations, directly retrieving the first document presentation from the location.

202. A data processing system, comprising:

a processor; and

a memory coupled to the processor to store instructions that causes the processor to perform the operations of;

receiving a search result from a search engine in response to a search request, the search result including a first search result page and a second search result page,

recording a first location of the first search result page when the first search result page is accessed via a window, and

recording a second location of the second search result page when the second search result page is accessed via the window, wherein the recordation of the second location causes the first location to be unrecorded.

203. A data processing system, comprising:

a processor; and

a memory coupled to the processor to store instructions that causes the processor to perform the operations of;

setting a location of a first document presentation in a window based on a predetermined action,

displaying further document presentations originating from the first document presentation,

displaying the first document presentation from the location in response to an input without having to select from a menu of document presentations and without having to go back in sequence through the further document presentations, and

resetting the location after the window is closed.

204. A data processing system, comprising:

a processor; and

a memory coupled to the processor to store instructions that causes the processor to perform the operations of;

presenting a first document presentation with a window having controls to control the presentation,

recording a resettable location for the first document presentation, the resettable location being associated with the window, the recording being triggered by an event of a predetermined nature which is in addition to the presenting of the first document presentation,

presenting further document presentations after the presenting of the first document presentation,

presenting again, in response to an input, the first document presentation after the presenting of the further document presentations, and

resetting the resettable location in response to another event of a predetermined nature.

205. A data processing system, comprising:

a processor; and

a memory coupled to the processor to store instructions that causes the processor to perform the operations of;

maintaining a plurality of recorded locations of a plurality of document presentations,

displaying one or more further document presentations, and

displaying a document presentation corresponding to one of the plurality of recorded locations in response to an input, without having to select from a menu of document presentations and without having to go back in sequence through the further document presentations.

206. A data processing system, comprising:

a processor; and

a memory coupled to the processor to store instructions that causes the processor to perform the operations of;

recording a location of a first storage image when the first storage image is displayed in a window,

displaying a second storage image in the window, and

redisplaying a first storage image in the window in response to an input, without having to select from a menu of directories.
