1. An organic electroluminescent device comprising:

  • a pair of electrodes; and

    at least one organic compound layer between the pair of electrodes, the at least one organic compound layer including a light emitting layer, wherein the light emitting layer contains at least one host material and at least one luminescent material, and the host material is a compound represented by the formula (I);

    wherein X11, X12, X13, and X14 each independently represent a substituted or unsubstituted oxygen atom, a substituted or unsubstituted sulfur atom, a substituted or unsubstituted nitrogen atom, a substituted or unsubstituted carbon atom or a substituted or unsubstituted phosphorus atom;

    M11 represents a metal ion;

    L11 represents a ligand;

    Y11 represents a counter ion;

    m11 represents an integer of 1 to 4;

    m12 represents an integer of 0 to 6;

    m13 represents an integer of 0 to 4; and

    the X11-X12 bond, the X12-X13 bond, and the X13-X14 bond is a single bond or a double bond;

    with the proviso that a compound in which the ligand composed of X11, X12, X13, and X14 is one derived from an 8-hydroxyquinolinol derivative is excluded.
