Abstract

System and method for the unique naming of resources in networked environments including peer-to-peer network environments. Embodiments may be used to generate network resource identifiers that uniquely identify resources such as processes over time and across the networked environment. One embodiment may be implemented as a resource name generator that generates unique identifiers for resources in networked environments. One embodiment may generate unique network resource identifiers for processes from information including, but not limited to, a host address that uniquely identifies on the network the host machine of the resource for which the unique network resource identifier is being generated, a current time (e.g. obtained from the host machine or alternatively from an external source such as an atomic time server), and a process identifier of the process that uniquely identifies the process among current processes on the host machine.

Claims

1. A system, comprising:

a plurality of host machines coupled to a network, wherein each of the plurality of host machines is configured to;

generate a process identifier for a process on the host machine that uniquely identifies the process among current processes on the host machine;

obtain a current time from a time source; and

combine a host address of the host machine that uniquely identifies the host machine on the network, the process identifier of the process, and the current time to generate a network resource identifier for the process;

wherein the network resource identifier uniquely identifies the process on the host machine and on the network.

2. The system as recited in claim 1, wherein the host address is an IP address of the host machine.

3. The system as recited in claim 1, wherein the host address is a combination of a gateway address and a machine address of the host machine.

4. The system as recited in claim 1, wherein the time source is a system clock of the host machine.

5. The system as recited in claim 1, wherein the time source is external to the host machine.

6. The system as recited in claim 1, wherein the time source is an atomic time server coupled to the host machine via the network.

7. The system as recited in claim 1, wherein the process on the host machine corresponding to the network resource identifier is a peer configured to participate in a peer-to-peer network environment on the network, wherein the network resource identifier uniquely identifies the peer in the peer-to-peer network environment.

8. A system, comprising:

a plurality of host machines coupled to a network;

wherein at least a subset of the plurality of host machines are each configured to generate a network resource identifier for each of one or more processes on the host machine, wherein each network resource identifier includes;

a host address of the host machine that uniquely identifies the host machine on the network;

a process identifier of the process on the host machine corresponding to the network resource identifier that uniquely identifies the process among current processes on the host machine; and

a current time obtained from a time source;

wherein each network resource identifier uniquely identifies the corresponding process on the host machine and on the network.

9. The system as recited in claim 8, wherein the host address is an IP address of the host machine.

10. The system as recited in claim 8, wherein the time source is an atomic time server coupled to the host machine via the network.

11. The system as recited in claim 8, wherein the process on the host machine corresponding to the network resource identifier is a peer configured to participate in a peer-to-peer network environment on the network, wherein the network resource identifier uniquely identifies the peer in the peer-to-peer network environment.

12. A system, comprising:

a processor; and

a memory comprising program instructions, wherein the program instructions are executable by the processor to;

generate a process identifier for a process on the system that uniquely identifies the process among current processes on the system;

obtain a current time from a time source; and

combine a host address of the system that uniquely identifies the system on a network, the process identifier of the process, and the current time to generate a network resource identifier for the process;

wherein the network resource identifier uniquely identifies the process on the system and on the network.

13. The system as recited in claim 12, wherein the host address is an IP address of the system.

14. The system as recited in claim 12, wherein the time source is an atomic time server coupled to the system via the network.

15. The system as recited in claim 12, wherein the process corresponding to the network resource identifier is a peer configured to participate in a peer-to-peer network environment on the network, wherein the network resource identifier uniquely identifies the peer in the peer-to-peer network environment.

16. A system, comprising:

a plurality of host machines coupled to a network, wherein each of the plurality of host machines is configured to;

participate in a peer-to-peer network environment on the network;

generate a process identifier for a peer-to-peer network environment process on the host machine that uniquely identifies the peer-to-peer network environment process among current processes on the host machine;

obtain a current time from a time source; and

combine a host address of the host machine that uniquely identifies the host machine on the network, the process identifier of the peer-to-peer network environment process, and the current time to generate a network resource identifier for the peer-to-peer network environment process;

wherein the network resource identifier uniquely identifies the peer-to-peer network environment process in the peer-to-peer network environment.

17. The system as recited in claim 16, wherein the host address is an IP address of the host machine.

18. The system as recited in claim 16, wherein the host address is a combination of a gateway address and a machine address of the host machine.

19. The system as recited in claim 16, wherein the time source is a system clock of the host machine.

20. The system as recited in claim 16, wherein the time source is external to the host machine.

21. The system as recited in claim 16, wherein the time source is an atomic time server coupled to the host machine via the network.

22. The system as recited in claim 16, wherein the peer-to-peer network environment process on the host machine corresponding to the network resource identifier is a peer configured to participate in the peer-to-peer network environment on the network, wherein the network resource identifier uniquely identifies the peer in the peer-to-peer network environment.

23. The system as recited in claim 16, wherein the plurality of host machines are configured to participate in the peer-to-peer network environment in accordance with one or more peer-to-peer platform protocols for enabling peers on the host machines to discover each other, communicate with each other, and cooperate with each other to form peer groups in the peer-to-peer network environment.

24. The system as recited in claim 16, wherein the plurality of host machines are configured to participate in a distributed computing framework on the network for submitting computational tasks in a distributed heterogeneous networked environment that utilizes peer groups to decentralize task dispatching and post-processing functions and enables a plurality of jobs to be managed and run simultaneously.

25. A system, comprising:

a plurality of host machines coupled to a network;

wherein at least a subset of the plurality of host machines are each configured to;

participate in a peer-to-peer network environment on the network;

generate network resource identifiers for one or more peer-to-peer network environment processes on the host machine, wherein each network resource identifier includes;

a host address of the host machine that uniquely identifies the host machine on the network;

a process identifier of the peer-to-peer network environment process on the host machine corresponding to the network resource identifier that uniquely identifies the peer-to-peer network environment process among current processes on the host machine; and

a current time obtained from a time source;

wherein each network resource identifier uniquely identifies the corresponding peer-to-peer network environment process in the peer-to-peer network environment.

26. The system as recited in claim 25, wherein the host address is an IP address of the host machine.

27. The system as recited in claim 25, wherein the time source is an atomic time server coupled to the host machine via the network.

28. The system as recited in claim 25, wherein the peer-to-peer network environment process on the host machine corresponding to the network resource identifier is a peer configured to participate in the peer-to-peer network environment on the network, wherein the network resource identifier uniquely identifies the peer in the peer-to-peer network environment.

The system as recited in claim 25, wherein the at least a subset of the plurality of host machines are configured to participate in the peer-to-peer network environment in accordance with one or more peer-to-peer platform protocols for enabling peers on the host machines to discover each other, communicate with each other, and cooperate with each other to form peer groups in the peer-to-peer network environment.

30. The system as recited in claim 25, wherein the at least a subset of the plurality of host machines are configured to participate in a distributed computing framework on the network for submitting computational tasks in a distributed heterogeneous networked environment that utilizes peer groups to decentralize task dispatching and post-processing functions and enables a plurality of jobs to be managed and run simultaneously.

31. A system, comprising:

a processor; and

a memory comprising program instructions, wherein the program instructions are executable by the processor to;

participate in a peer-to-peer network environment on a network;

generate a process identifier for a peer-to-peer network environment process on the system that uniquely identifies the peer-to-peer network environment process among current processes on the system;

obtain a current time from a time source; and

combine a host address of the system that uniquely identifies the system on the network, the process identifier of the peer-to-peer network environment process, and the current time to generate a network resource identifier for the peer-to-peer network environment process;

wherein the network resource identifier uniquely identifies the peer-to-peer network environment process in the peer-to-peer network environment.

32. The system as recited in claim 31, wherein the host address is an IP address of the system.

33. The system as recited in claim 31, wherein the time source is an atomic time server coupled to the system via the network.

34. The system as recited in claim 31, wherein the peer-to-peer network environment process is a peer configured to participate in the peer-to-peer network environment on the network, wherein the network resource identifier uniquely identifies the peer in the peer-to-peer network environment.

35. The system as recited in claim 31, further configured to participate in the peer-to-peer network environment in accordance with one or more peer-to-peer platform protocols for enabling a peer on the system to discover other peers, communicate with the other peers, and cooperate with the other peers to form peer groups in the peer-to-peer network environment.

36. The system as recited in claim 31, further configured to participate in a distributed computing framework on the network for submitting computational tasks in a distributed heterogeneous networked environment that utilizes peer groups to decentralize task dispatching and post-processing functions and enables a plurality of jobs to be managed and run simultaneously.

37. A method, comprising:

generating a process identifier for a process on a host machine that uniquely identifies the process among current processes on the host machine;

obtaining a current time from a time source; and

combining a host address of the host machine that uniquely identifies the host machine on a network, the process identifier of the process, and the current time to generate a network resource identifier for the process;

wherein the network resource identifier uniquely identifies the process on the host machine and on the network.

38. The method as recited in claim 37, wherein the host address is an IP address of the host machine.

39. The method as recited in claim 37, wherein the time source is an atomic time server coupled to the host machine via the network.

40. The method as recited in claim 37, wherein the process corresponding to the network resource identifier is a peer configured to participate in a peer-to-peer network environment on the network, wherein the network resource identifier uniquely identifies the peer in the peer-to-peer network environment.

41. A method, comprising:

generating a process identifier for a peer-to-peer network environment process on a host machine participating in a peer-to-peer network environment on a network, wherein the process identifier uniquely identifies the peer-to-peer network environment process among current processes on the host machine;

obtaining a current time from a time source; and

combining a host address of the host machine that uniquely identifies the system on the network, the process identifier of the peer-to-peer network environment process, and the current time to generate a network resource identifier for the peer-to-peer network environment process;

wherein the network resource identifier uniquely identifies the peer-to-peer network environment process in the peer-to-peer network environment.

42. The method as recited in claim 41, wherein the host address is an IP address of the host machine.

43. The method as recited in claim 41, wherein the time source is an atomic time server coupled to the host machine via the network.

44. The method as recited in claim 41, wherein the peer-to-peer network environment process is a peer configured to participate in the peer-to-peer network environment on the network, wherein the network resource identifier uniquely identifies the peer in the peer-to-peer network environment.

45. The method, as recited in claim 41, wherein the host machine is configured to participate in the peer-to-peer network environment in accordance with one or more peer-to-peer platform protocols for enabling a peer on the host machine to discover other peers, communicate with the other peers, and cooperate with the other peers to form peer groups in the peer-to-peer network environment.

46. The method as recited in claim 41, wherein the host machine is configured to participate in a distributed computing framework on the network for submitting computational tasks in a distributed heterogeneous networked environment that utilizes peer groups to decentralize task dispatching and post-processing functions and enables a plurality of jobs to be managed and run simultaneously.

47. A computer-accessible medium comprising program instructions, wherein the program instructions are configured to implement:

generating a process identifier for a process on a host machine that uniquely identifies the process among current processes on the host machine;

obtaining a current time from a time source; and

combining a host address of the host machine that uniquely identifies the host machine on a network, the process identifier of the process, and the current time to generate a network resource identifier for the process;

wherein the network resource identifier uniquely identifies the process on the host machine and on the network.

48. The computer-accessible medium as recited in claim 47, wherein the host address is an IP address of the host machine.

49. The computer-accessible medium as recited in claim 47, wherein the time source is an atomic time server coupled to the host machine via the network.

50. The computer-accessible medium as recited in claim 47, wherein the process corresponding to the network resource identifier is a peer configured to participate in a peer-to-peer network environment on the network, wherein the network resource identifier uniquely identifies the peer in the peer-to-peer network environment.

51. A computer-accessible medium comprising program instructions, wherein the program instructions are configured to implement:

generating a process identifier for a peer-to-peer network environment process on a host machine participating in a peer-to-peer network environment on a network, wherein the process identifier uniquely identifies the peer-to-peer network environment process among current processes on the host machine;

obtaining a current time from a time source; and

combining a host address of the host machine that uniquely identifies the system on the network, the process identifier of the peer-to-peer network environment process, and the current time to generate a network resource identifier for the peer-to-peer network environment process;

wherein the network resource identifier uniquely identifies the peer-to-peer network environment process in the peer-to-peer network environment.

52. The computer-accessible medium as recited in claim 51, wherein the host address is an IP address of the host machine.

53. The computer-accessible medium as recited in claim 51, wherein the time source is an atomic time server coupled to the host machine via the network.

54. The computer-accessible medium as recited in claim 51, wherein the peer-to-peer network environment process is a peer configured to participate in the peer-to-peer network environment on the network, wherein the network resource identifier uniquely identifies the peer in the peer-to-peer network environment.

55. The computer-accessible medium as recited in claim 51, wherein the host machine is configured to participate in the peer-to-peer network environment in accordance with one or more peer-to-peer platform protocols for enabling a peer on the host machine to discover other peers, communicate with the other peers, and cooperate with the other peers to form peer groups in the peer-to-peer network environment.

56. The computer-accessible medium as recited in claim 51, wherein the host machine is configured to participate in a distributed computing framework on the network for submitting computational tasks in a distributed heterogeneous networked environment that utilizes peer groups to decentralize task dispatching and post-processing functions and enables a plurality of jobs to be managed and run simultaneously.
