Abstract

The present invention relates to the use of a quaternary ammonium hydroxyethyl cellulose ether that comprises an ether substituent containing an alkyl group with 24 carbon atoms, preferably 2 carbon atoms, having a DS_alkyl of 0.1-2.5, preferably 0.2-2.0 and most preferably 0.3-1.5, as a hair and skin conditioner. The cellulose ether exhibits an increased substantivity to hair, without showing any build-up after repetitive shampooing. Hair that has been treated with the above-mentioned cellulose ether also shows an improved wet combability. A hair or skin conditioning composition and a solid soap bar, as well as a certain cellulose ether and a process for its production are also disclosed.

Claims

1. Use of a quaternary ammonium hydroxyethyl cellulose ether, characterised in that it comprises an ether substituent containing an alkyl group with 2-4 carbon atoms having a DS_alkyl of 0.1-2.5, as a hair or skin conditioner.

2. Use of a cellulose ether according to claim 1, characterised in that the alkyl group comprises an ethyl group having a DS_ethyl of 0.3-2.5.

3. Use of a cellulose ether according to claims 1-2, characterised in that the cellulose ether has a MS_hydroxyethyl of 0.4-4.0.

4. Use of a cellulose ether according to claims 1-3, characterised in that it has a MS_{quaternary ammonium} of 0.02-2.0.

5. Use of a cellulose ether according to claims 1-4, characterised in that the quaternary ammonium group is a 2-hydroxypropyl trialkyl ammonium chloride group, where the alkyl groups contain 1-22 carbon atoms.

6. Use of a cellulose ether according to claims 1-5, characterised in that the quaternary ammonium group is a 2-hydroxypropyl trialkyl ammonium chloride group, where the alkyl groups contain 1-4 carbon atoms.

7. Use of a cellulose ether according to claims 1-6, characterised in that the quaternary ammonium group is a 2-hydroxypropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride group.

8. Use of a cellulose ether according to claims 1-7, characterised in that it comprises substituents of the formula

9. Use of a cellulose ether according to claim 8, characterised in that x=0.

10. Use of a cellulose ether according to claim 8, characterised in that it has a MS of 0.001-0.2 for the group

11. Use of a cellulose ether according to claims 1-10, characterised in that R₅ partially is methyl.

12. Use of a cellulose ether according to claims 1-11, where R₁, R₂ and R₃ independently of each other is an alkyl group with 1-4 carbon atoms.

13. Use of a cellulose ether according to claims 1-12, characterised in that p and q are 2.

14. Use of a cellulose ether according to claims 1-13, characterised in that R₁, R₂ and R₃ are —

CH₃.

15. A quaternary ammonium hydroxyethyl cellulose ether, characterised in that the cellulose ether has the structure as defined in claims 1-14, with the proviso that the cellulose ether does not contain any hydrophobic group, selected from the group consisting of aryl, alkyl, alkenyl, aralkyl and mixtures thereof, and having at least 10 carbon atoms, the hydrophobic group not being a part of any quaternary ammonium group.

A process for producing a quaternary ammonium alkyl hydroxyethyl cellulose ether according to claim 15, characterised in that the cellulose ether is produced by reacting a quaternary ammonium compound with a hydroxyethyl cellulose ether comprising an ether substituent containing an alkyl group with 2-4 carbon atoms and a DS_alkyl of 0.1-2.5 in the presence of alkali.

17. A process according to claim 16 where the quaternary ammonium compound is a 2,3-epoxypropyltrialkyl ammonium chloride or a 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyltrialkyl ammonium chloride, where the alkyl groups contain 1-22 carbon atoms.

18. A process according to claim 17 where the alkyl groups contain 1-4 carbon atoms.

19. A process according to claim 18 where the alkyl groups are methyl groups.

20. An aqueous hair or skin conditioning composition, characterised in that it contains a quaternary ammonium alkyl hydroxyethyl cellulose ether as defined in claim 1-15.

21. An aqueous composition according to claim 20 to be used in a conditioning shampoo or body wash containing a nonionic, an anionic or an amphoteric surfactant or a blend thereof in a total amount of 5 to 30% 0.2 to 5% thickener, and cellulose ether,

the composition having a pH between 5.0 to 7.0.

22. An aqueous composition according to claim 20 to be used in a hair conditioner containing 0.05 to 2% of a quaternary ammonium alkyl hydroxyethyl cellulose ether 0.5 to 5% of a long chain fatty alcohol a skin compatible acid in an amount sufficient to obtain a pH between 2.5 to 5.5.

23. A solid soap bar composition, characterised in that it contains a quaternary ammonium alkyl hydroxyethyl cellulose ether as defined in claim 1-15 and a syndet, natural or combi soap.

A solid soap bar composition according to claim 23 containing an anionic surfactant, which is a synthetic anionic surfactant and/or a soap, or an amphoteric surfactant or a blend thereof in a total amount of 40-90% 10 to 60% of a plasticiser 0.05 to 2% of a quaternary ammonium alkyl hydroxyethyl cellulose ether.
