Abstract

A method and a device for rapidly warming up a liquid-cooled internal combustion engine, in particular of a motor vehicle engine, by warming up the cooling liquid. The cooling liquid is warmed in a simple manner without additional provision of heating elements in that the cooling liquid is warmed using a generator (1) that is operated during a heating phase at an operating point (AP′) having high power loss and at the operating temperature of the engine at an operating point (AP) having low power loss.

Claims

1. A method of quickly warming up a liquid-cooled internal combustion engine, in particular a motor vehicle engine, by warming up the cooling liquid,

wherein the cooling liquid is warmed up using a synchronous generator (1) which is operated during a heating phase at an operating point (AP′

U1b, I1b) having high power loss and at the operating temperature of the engine at an operating point (AP;

U1a, I1a) having low power loss.

2. The method as recited in claim 1,

wherein the generator (1) is operated, with the engine being cold, at an operating point (AP′

;

U1b, I1b) having maximum power loss and, when the engine is at operating temperature, at an operating point (AP, U1a, I1a) having minimal power loss.

3. The method as recited in claim 1 or 2,

wherein the generator efficiency (1) is adjusted using threshold values or characteristic curves as a function of the engine temperature or coolant temperature.

4. A device for quickly warming up a liquid-cooled internal combustion engine, in particular a motor vehicle engine, characterized by a generator (1) for warming up the cooling liquid, the generator being operated during a heating phase at an operating point (AP′

;

U1b, I1b) having high power loss and at the operating temperature of the engine at an operating point (AP;

U1a, I1a) having low power loss.

5. The device as recited in claim 4, wherein the generator (1) is a crankshaft starter generator.

6. The device as recited in claim 4 or 5,

wherein a pulse-controlled inverter is provided to adjust generator efficiency.
