Abstract

An optical communication device having multiple light sources under a single lens. The optical communication device has two light sources. The optical communication device has a lens optically coupled to the two light sources. The lens is shaped to direct light from the two light sources towards an axis of the lens. The optical communication device further has a third light source located below the approximate center of the lens.

Claims

1. A communication device comprising:

two light sources;

a lens optically coupled with said two light sources; and

wherein said lens is shaped to direct light from said two light sources towards a first axis of said lens.

2. The communication device of claim 1, further comprising a third light source located below the approximate center of said lens.

3. The communication device of claim 1, wherein said two light sources are located substantially equidistant from said third light source.

4. The communication device of claim 1, wherein said two light sources are operable to radiate at substantially the same wavelength.

5. The communication device of claim 4, wherein said third light source is operable to radiate at a different wavelength than said two light sources.

6. The communication device of claim 1, wherein said two light sources comprise light emitting diodes.

7. The communication device of claim 1, wherein said lens comprises a plurality of substantially spherical sections.

8. The communication device of claim 1, wherein said lens comprises three substantially spherical sections.

9. The communication device of claim 1, wherein said lens comprises an aspherical profile along a second axis of said lens and a substantially spherical profile along a third axis of said lens perpendicular to the second axis.

10. The communication device of claim 9, wherein said two light sources are oriented along the second axis.

11. The communication device of claim 9, wherein said lens comprises a plurality of substantially spherical sections.

12. The communication device of claim 1, wherein the thickness of said lens varies across the surface of said lens to direct light from said two light sources towards the first axis.

13. A communication device comprising:

first and second light sources;

a third light source; and

a lens optically coupled to said first, second, and third light sources, said lens having an aspherical profile along a first axis and a substantially spherical profile along a second axis substantially perpendicular to said first axis, wherein said first and second light sources are located substantially along said first axis.

14. The communication device of claim 13, wherein said third light source is located below the approximate center of said lens.

15. The communication device of claim 13, wherein said first and second light sources radiate together to transmit the same signal at a first wavelength.

16. The communication device of claim 15, wherein said third light source radiates at a second wavelength.

17. The communication device of claim 13, wherein said first and second light sources comprise light emitting diodes.

18. The communication device of claim 17, wherein said third light source comprises a light emitting diode.

19. The communication device of claim 13, wherein said lens comprises a plurality of substantially spherical sections.

20. The communication device of claim 13, wherein said lens comprises three substantially spherical sections.

21. The communication device of claim 13, wherein said first and second light sources are located substantially equidistant from said third light source.

22. The communication device of claim 13, wherein said first and second light sources are operable as a remote control signal.

23. The communication device of claim 13, wherein said third light source is operable as a data signal.

24. A transceiver comprising:

two light sources;

a lens optically coupled to said two light sources and having a central axis;

wherein said two light sources are positioned with respect to said central axis such that a combined light intensity profile from said two light sources is symmetrical about said central axis.

25. The transceiver of claim 24, wherein said lens is shaped to enhance the light intensity near said central axis.

26. The transceiver of claim 24, wherein said transceiver further comprises a third light source that is located approximately on said central axis.

27. The transceiver of claim 24, wherein said two light sources are operable to transmit at substantially the same wavelength.

28. The transceiver of claim 27, wherein said third light source is operable to radiate at a different wavelength than said two light sources.

29. The transceiver of claim 24, wherein said two light sources comprise first and second light emitting diodes.

30. The transceiver of claim 29, wherein said third source comprises a third light emitting diode.

31. The transceiver of claim 24, wherein said lens comprises a plurality of substantially spherical sections.

32. The transceiver of claim 24, wherein said lens comprises three substantially spherical sections.

33. The transceiver of claim 24, wherein said lens comprises an aspherical profile along a first axis of said lens and a substantially spherical profile along a second axis of said lens perpendicular to said first axis.

34. The transceiver of claim 33, wherein said two light sources are oriented along said first axis.

35. The transceiver of claim 33, wherein said lens comprises a plurality of substantially spherical sections.

36. The transceiver of claim 35, wherein said lens has three focal points along said first axis.

37. The transceiver of claim 33, wherein said lens has two focal points along said first axis.

38. The transceiver of claim 24, wherein the thickness of said lens varies across the surface of said lens to direct light from said two light sources towards said central axis.
