Abstract

Electronic note taking is enhanced by automatically modifying an electronic document corresponding to a user'"'"'s meeting notes to include at least some data from an electronic calendar or scheduling system in which the user'"'"'s meeting is scheduled. For example, when an electronic note is created for a specific meeting, information about the meeting from the user'"'"'s electronic calendar or scheduling system can automatically be included in the new electronic note. This information may be provided in the note in a form that allows it to be electronically searched and shared with others.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

providing an electronic calendar system, wherein the electronic calendar system is capable of receiving data including meeting information;

providing an electronic note taking application, wherein the electronic note taking application is capable of receiving a user'"'"'s input and saving the input as an electronic document; and

automatically modifying the electronic document to include at least some of the data from the electronic calendar system including the meeting information.

2. A method according to claim 1, wherein, prior to automatically modifying the electronic document, the method further includes receiving input indicating at least some of the meeting information to be included in the electronic document.

3. A method according to claim 1, wherein the electronic document is automatically saved under a name derived from at least a portion of the meeting information.

4. A method according to claim 1, further comprising:

issuing a reminder at or before a scheduled meeting start time.

5. A method according to claim 1, further comprising:

providing a user interface when opening the electronic document that allows the user to specify or modify at least a portion of the meeting information to be included in the electronic document.

6. A method comprising:

receiving data including meeting information;

providing an electronic document capable of receiving and saving a user'"'"'s input; and

automatically modifying the electronic document to include at least some of the meeting information.

7. A method according to claim 6, wherein, prior to automatically modifying the electronic document, the method further includes receiving input indicating the meeting information to be included in the electronic document.

8. A method according to claim 6, wherein the meeting information includes information corresponding to at least one member selected from the group consisting of:

a title;

a list of subjects on an agenda;

a list of actual subjects discussed;

a scheduled meeting start time;

a scheduled meeting end time;

actual meeting start time;

actual meeting end time;

a scheduled meeting date;

actual meeting date;

a scheduled meeting location;

actual meeting location;

a meeting organizer;

a list of meeting attendees;

a list of meeting invitees;

a list of scheduled speakers;

a list of actual speakers;

a meeting agenda;

a meeting schedule; and

a user message regarding the meeting.

9. A method according to claim 6, wherein the data including meeting information is provided by a first application program and the electronic document is provided in a second application program that is different from the first application program.

10. A method according to claim 6, wherein the electronic document is automatically saved under a name derived from at least a portion of the meeting information.

11. A method according to claim 6, wherein the electronic document is modified to provide at least some of the meeting information as a visible portion of the electronic document when the electronic document is rendered.

12. A method according to claim 6, wherein the electronic document is modified to provide at least some of the meeting information in a background of the electronic document when the electronic document is rendered.

13. A method according to claim 6, wherein the electronic document is modified to provide at least some of the meeting information in a header or a footer of the electronic document.

14. A method according to claim 6, wherein during the modifying, the electronic document is tagged with metadata that represents at least some of the meeting information.

15. A method according to claim 6, further comprising:

issuing a reminder at or before a scheduled meeting start time.

16. A method according to claim 6, further comprising:

providing a user interface when opening the electronic document that allows the user to specify or modify at least a portion of the meeting information to be included in the electronic document.

17. A method according to claim 6, wherein the user'"'"'s input is in the form of electronic ink.

18. A method according to claim 6, wherein the user'"'"'s input is in the form of machine-generated text.

19. A system comprising:

an electronic calendar system capable of receiving data including meeting information;

an electronic note taking application capable of receiving a user'"'"'s input and saving the input as an electronic document; and

a processor programmed to automatically modify the electronic document to include at least some of the data from the electronic calendar system including the meeting information.

20. A system according to claim 19, wherein, prior to automatically modifying the electronic document, the processor further is programmed to receive input indicating at least some of the meeting information to be included in the electronic document.

21. A system according to claim 19, wherein the electronic document is automatically saved under a name derived from at least a portion of the meeting information.

22. A system according to claim 19, further comprising:

a reminder system for issuing a reminder at or before a scheduled meeting start time.

23. A system according to claim 19, further comprising:

a user interface that, when opening the electronic document, allows the user to specify or modify at least a portion of the meeting information to be included in the electronic document.

24. A system comprising:

an input system receiving data including meeting information;

an electronic document application that provides an electronic document capable of receiving and saving a user'"'"'s input; and

a processor that automatically modifies the electronic document to include at least some of the meeting information.

25. A system according to claim 24, wherein, prior to automatically modifying the electronic document, the input system receives input indicating the meeting information to be included in the electronic document.

26. A system according to claim 24, wherein the meeting information includes information corresponding to at least one member selected from the group consisting of:

a title;

a list of subjects on an agenda;

a list of actual subjects discussed;

a scheduled meeting start time;

a scheduled meeting end time;

actual meeting start time;

actual meeting end time;

a scheduled meeting date;

actual meeting date;

a scheduled meeting location;

actual meeting location;

a meeting organizer;

a list of meeting attendees;

a list of meeting invitees;

a list of scheduled speakers;

a list of actual speakers;

a meeting agenda;

a meeting schedule; and

a user message regarding the meeting.

27. A system according to claim 24, wherein the data including meeting information is received from an application program different from the electronic document application.

28. A system according to claim 24, wherein the electronic document is automatically saved under a name derived from at least a portion of the meeting information.

29. A system according to claim 24, wherein the processor modifies the electronic document to provide at least some of the meeting information as a visible portion of the electronic document when the electronic document is rendered.

30. A system according to claim 24, wherein the processor modifies the electronic document to provide at least some of the meeting information in a background of the electronic document when the electronic document is rendered.

31. A system according to claim 24, wherein the processor modifies the electronic document to provide at least some of the meeting information in a header or a footer of the electronic document.

32. A system according to claim 24, wherein during the modifying, the processor tags the electronic document with metadata that represents at least some of the meeting information.

33. A system according to claim 24, further comprising:

a reminder system for issuing a reminder at or before a scheduled meeting start time.

34. A system according to claim 24, further comprising:

a user interface that, when opening the electronic document, allows the user to specify or modify at least a portion of the meeting information to be included in the electronic document.

35. A system according to claim 24, wherein the user'"'"'s input is in the form of electronic ink.

36. A system according to claim 24, wherein the user'"'"'s input is in the form of machine-generated text.
