Abstract

Methods and apparatus for constructing objects within a cache system thereby allowing the cache system to respond to requested objects that are not initially available within the cache system. One embodiment of the invention caches image files, where the images are divided into components and stored in a format that allows identification and access to the components. The cache system determines that an object, such as an image file, is missing from the cache memory, locates sufficient components from the cache memory and/or external storage, and constructs the object from the located components.

Claims

1. A cache system comprising:

a cache memory storing one or more objects;

a logic element that determines if an object is missing from the memory; and

a processor that obtains at least one component related to the missing object and constructs the object in response to the logic element determining that the object is missing from the cache memory.

2. The cache system of claim 1 wherein obtaining the at least one component further comprises obtaining the at least one component from an object.

3. The cache system of claim 1, wherein the object is an image file.

4. The cache system of claim 3, wherein the image file is a JPEG-2000 file.

5. The cache system of claim 1, wherein the component is an image file.

6. The cache system of claim 5, wherein the image file is a JPEG-2000 file.

7. The cache system of claim 1, wherein the object is a web page.

8. The cache system of claim 1, wherein the component is a web page.

9. The cache system of claim 1, wherein the object is a document.

10. The cache system of claim 1, wherein the component is a docment.

11. The cache system of claim 1, wherein a request is generated by the cache system.

12. The cache system of claim 1, wherein the cache system is a server.

13. The cache system of claim 12, wherein the request is generated by a client.

14. The cache system of claim 1, wherein the logic element determining if the requested object is missing from the cache memory:

further determining if the components to construct the requested objects are in the cache memory; and

further determining the components missing from the cache memory required from the storage device to construct the object.

15. The cache system of claim 14, wherein the cache system is generating request for an object.

16. An image processing method comprising:

receiving a request for an object;

determining if one or more portions of the object are cached;

determining if the one or more portions are sufficient to reconstruct the object; and

reconstructing the object based on one or more of one or more cached portions and one or more requested portions.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the one or more cached portions and the one or more requested portions are rendered.

18. The method of claim 16, wherein the one or more portions are a packet.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein the packet comprises spatial location information, color channel information, resolution information and quality information.

20. The method of claim 16, wherein the object is at least one of a web page, an image, a document and a compound document.
