Abstract

A spread signal is produced having an adjustable spread spectrum. A data signal is provided for transmission. The data signal is processed to have a first spread spectrum. The processed first spread spectrum data signal is filtered to have one out of a plurality of spread spectrums. The filtering capable of producing a signal having a spread spectrum of any of the plurality of spread spectrums. The filtered one spread spectrum data signal is transmitted.

Claims

1. A method for producing a spread signal having an adjustable spread spectrum, the method comprising:

providing a data signal for transmission;

processing the data signal to have a first spread spectrum; and

filtering the processed first spread spectrum data signal to have one out of a plurality of spread spectrums, the filtering capable of producing a signal having a spread spectrum of any of the plurality of spread spectrums; and

transmitting the filtered one spread spectrum data signal.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the first spread spectrum has a spectrum greater than any of the plurality of spread spectrums.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the processing the data signal to have a first spread spectrum comprises:

mixing the data signal with a chipping sequence; and

using an impulse response generator to produce the data signal having the first spread spectrum.

4. A mobile station comprising:

means for processing a data signal to have a first spread spectrum; and

a variable bandwidth filter for filtering the processed first spread spectrum data signal to have one out of a plurality of spread spectrums, the filtering capable of producing a signal having a spread spectrum of any of the plurality of spread spectrums; and

means for transmitting the filtered one spread spectrum data signal.

5. The mobile station of claim 4 wherein the first spread spectrum has a spectrum greater than any of the plurality of spread spectrums.

6. The mobile station of claim 4 wherein the processing the data signal to have a first spread spectrum comprises:

mixing the data signal with a chipping sequence; and

using an impulse response generator to produce the data signal having the first spread spectrum.

8. The base station of claim 4 wherein the first spread spectrum has a spectrum greater than any of the plurality of spread spectrums.

9. The base station of claim 4 wherein the processing the data signal to have a first spread spectrum comprises:

mixing the data signal with a chipping sequence; and

using an impulse response generator to produce the data signal having the first spread spectrum.

7. A base station comprising:

means for processing a data signal to have a first spread spectrum; and

a variable bandwidth filter for filtering the processed first spread spectrum data signal to have one out of a plurality of spread spectrums, the filtering capable of producing a signal having a spread spectrum of any of the plurality of spread spectrums; and

means for transmitting the filtered one spread spectrum data signal.
