Abstract

A system, method and computer program product are disclosed for receiving data from a satellite radio network in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention. In accordance with an embodiment of the present invention, a datagram broadcast via a satellite radio network is received utilizing a receiver. The datagram includes broadcast identifier information that identifies a segment of receivers in the satellite radio network to which the datagram is directed. Utilizing the broadcast identifier information, a determination is made as to whether the recipient receiver is a member of the identified segment of receivers to which the datagram is directed. If the recipient receiver is determined to be a member of the identified segment of receivers to which the datagram is directed, then the datagram is processed.

Claims

1. A method for receiving data from a satellite radio network, comprising:

a) receiving a datagram broadcast via a satellite radio network utilizing a receiver, wherein the datagram includes broadcast identifier information that identifies a segment of receivers in the satellite radio network to which the datagram is directed;

b) determining if the recipient receiver is a member of the identified segment of receivers to which the datagram is directed utilizing the broadcast identifier information; and

c) processing the datagram if the recipient receiver is determined to be a member of the identified segment of receivers to which the datagram is directed.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the recipient receiver is located in a vehicle.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the broadcast identifier information of the datagram is compared with locally stored identifier information of the recipient receiver to determine if the recipient receiver is a member of the identified segment of receivers to which the datagram is directed.

The method of claim 1, wherein the broadcast identifier information includes information identifying a geographic area to which the datagram is directed, and wherein the broadcast identifier information is compared with information about a geographic location of the recipient receiver to determine whether the recipient receiver is in the geographic area to which the datagram is directed.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the geographic location information of the recipient receiver is obtained utilizing a global positioning system.

The method of claim 1, wherein the broadcast identifier information includes information identifying a subject matter of the datagram, and wherein the broadcast identifier information is compared with locally stored identifier information of the recipient receiver to determine whether the datagram is directed to the recipient receiver.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein a user of the recipient receiver defines at least a portion of the locally stored identifier information that is compared with the broadcast identifier information.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the datagram includes an instruction to modify at least a portion of locally stored identifier information of the recipient receiver, and wherein the processing of the datagram includes modifying the locally stored identifier information according to the instruction.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein a modified portion of the locally stored identifier information defines at least one segment of receivers in the satellite radio network to which the recipient receiver belongs.

10. The method of claim 8, wherein a contact is notified upon modification of the locally stored identifier information.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the contact is notified via a cellular wireless communication link.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein processing the datagram includes storing the datagram in memory.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein processing the datagram includes informing a user of the recipient receiver of the receipt of the datagram.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein processing the datagram includes determining whether a previously received copy of the datagram is stored in memory coupled to the recipient receiver.

15. The method of claim 14, further comprising determining whether the received datagram includes information for at least one of updating and deleting the previously received copy of the datagram stored in memory.

16. The method of claim 1, wherein an instruction to modify at least a portion of locally stored identifier information of the recipient receiver is received via a cellular wireless communication link, and wherein the locally stored identifier information is modified according to the instruction.

17. The method of claim 1, wherein a modified portion of the locally stored identifier information defines at least one segment of receivers in the satellite radio network to which the recipient receiver is a member.

18. The method of claim 1, wherein the datagram includes audio information, and wherein processing of the datagram includes presenting the audio information of the datagram utilizing an audio component coupled to the recipient receiver.

19. The method of claim 1, wherein the datagram includes visual information, and wherein processing of the datagram includes presenting the visual information of the datagram utilizing a visual component coupled to the recipient receiver.

20. The method of claim 1, further comprising collecting diagnostic information about a vehicle in which the recipient receiver is located, and wherein processing of the datagram includes determining whether information in the datagram relates to the collected diagnostic information, and presenting the information of the datagram relating to the diagnostic information to a user of the recipient receiver.

21. The method of claim 1, wherein the broadcast identifier includes an individual identifier.

22. The method of claim 1, wherein the broadcast identifier includes a group identifier.

23. The method of claim 1, wherein the broadcast identifier includes a category identifier.

24. The method of claim 1, wherein the broadcast identifier includes an area identifier.

25. The method of claim 1, wherein the broadcast identifier includes a data identifier.

26. The method of claim 1, wherein the broadcast identifier includes a vehicle identifier.

27. A system for receiving data from a satellite radio network, comprising:

a) a receiver for receiving a datagram broadcast via a satellite radio network, wherein the datagram includes broadcast identifier information that identifies a segment of receivers in the satellite radio network to which the datagram is directed;

b) logic for utilizing the broadcast identifier information to determine if the recipient receiver is a member of the identified segment of receivers to which the datagram is directed; and

c) logic for processing the datagram if the recipient receiver is determined to be a member of the identified segment of receivers to which the datagram is directed.

28. The system of claim 27, wherein the recipient receiver is located in a vehicle.

29. The system of claim 27, further comprising locally stored identifier information stored in memory coupled to the recipient receiver, and wherein the broadcast identifier information of the datagram is compared with the locally stored identifier information to determine if the recipient receiver is a member of the identified segment of receivers to which the datagram is directed.

30. The system of claim 27, wherein the broadcast identifier information includes information which indicates a geographic area to which the datagram is directed, and wherein the broadcast identifier information is compared with information about a geographic location of the recipient receiver to determine whether the recipient receiver is in the geographic area to which the datagram is directed.

31. The system of claim 30, further comprising a global positioning system for obtaining the geographic location information of the recipient receiver.

32. The system of claim 27, wherein the datagram includes an instruction to modify at least a portion of locally stored identifier information of the recipient receiver, and wherein the processing of the datagram includes modifying the locally stored identifier information according to the instruction.

33. The system of claim 32, wherein a modified portion of the locally stored identifier information defines at least one segment of receivers in the satellite radio network to which the recipient receiver is a member.

34. The system of claim 32, wherein a contact is notified upon modification of the locally stored identifier information.

35. The system of claim 34, further comprising a cellular wireless communication link for notifying the contact.

36. The system of claim 27, wherein the broadcast identifier includes an individual identifier.

37. The system of claim 27, wherein the broadcast identifier includes a group identifier.

38. The system of claim 27, wherein the broadcast identifier includes a category identifier.

39. The system of claim 27, wherein the broadcast identifier includes an area identifier.

40. The system of claim 27, wherein the broadcast identifier includes a data identifier.

41. The system of claim 27, wherein the broadcast identifier includes a vehicle identifier.

42. A computer program product for receiving data from a satellite radio network, comprising:

a) computer code for receiving a datagram broadcast via a satellite radio network utilizing a receiver, wherein the datagram includes broadcast identifier information that identifies a segment of receivers in the satellite radio network to which the datagram is directed;

b) computer code for determining if the recipient receiver is a member of the identified segment of receivers to which the datagram is directed utilizing the broadcast identifier information; and

c) computer code for processing the datagram if the recipient receiver is determined to be a member of the identified segment of receivers to which the datagram is directed.

43. The computer program product of claim 42, wherein the datagram includes an instruction to modify at least a portion of locally stored identifier information of the recipient receiver, and wherein the processing of the datagram includes modifying the locally stored identifier information according to the instruction.

44. The computer program product of claim 43, wherein a contact is notified upon modification of the locally stored identifier information.

45. The computer program product of claim 42, wherein the broadcast identifier includes an individual identifier.

46. The computer program product of claim 42, wherein the broadcast identifier includes a group identifier.

47. The computer program product of claim 42, wherein the broadcast identifier includes a category identifier.

48. The computer program product of claim 42, wherein the broadcast identifier includes an area identifier.

49. The computer program product of claim 42, wherein the broadcast identifier includes a data identifier.

50. The computer program product of claim 42, wherein the broadcast identifier includes a vehicle identifier.

51. A method for broadcasting data from a satellite radio network, comprising:

a) generating broadcast identifier information included in a datagram, wherein the broadcast identifier information identifies a segment of receivers in a satellite radio network to which the datagram is directed;

b) broadcasting the datagram with the broadcast identifier information via the satellite radio network to permit receipt of the datagram by receivers in the satellite radio network; and

c) receiving a notification by at least one receiver in the segment of receivers for which the datagram is directed, wherein the notification indicates that the at least one receiver has received the datagram.

52. The method of claim 51, wherein each receiver in the satellite radio network receiving the datagram utilizes the broadcast identifier information to determine if the recipient receiver is a member of the identified segment of receivers to which the datagram is directed.

53. The method of claim 52, wherein the broadcast identifier information of the datagram is compared with locally stored identifier information of the recipient receiver to determine if the recipient receiver is a member of the identified segment of receivers to which the datagram is directed.

54. The method of claim 52, wherein the broadcast identifier information includes information identifying a geographic area to which the datagram is directed, and wherein the broadcast identifier information is compared with information about a geographic location of the recipient receiver to determine whether the recipient receiver is in the geographic area to which the datagram is directed.

55. The method of claim 54, wherein the geographic location information of the recipient receiver is obtained utilizing a global positioning system.

56. The method of claim 51, wherein the datagram includes an instruction to modify at least a portion of locally stored identifier information of each of the receivers in the segment of receivers to which the datagram is directed.

57. The method of claim 56, wherein the notification is received upon modification of the locally stored identifier information in the at least one receiver.

58. The method of claim 51, wherein the notification is received via a cellular wireless communication link.

59. The method of claim 51, wherein at least one of the receivers in the satellite radio network is located in a vehicle.

60. The method of claim 51, wherein a database of information relating to the receivers in the satellite radio network is update up receipt of the notification.

61. The method of claim 51, wherein the broadcast identifier includes an individual identifier.

62. The method of claim 51, wherein the broadcast identifier includes a group identifier.

63. The method of claim 51, wherein the broadcast identifier includes a category identifier.

64. The method of claim 51, wherein the broadcast identifier includes an area identifier.

65. The method of claim 51, wherein the broadcast identifier includes a data identifier.

66. The method of claim 51, wherein the broadcast identifier includes a vehicle identifier.

67. A system for broadcasting data from a satellite radio network, comprising:

a) logic for generating broadcast identifier information included in a datagram, wherein the broadcast identifier information identifies a segment of receivers in a satellite radio network to which the datagram is directed;

b) a transmitter coupled to the generating logic for broadcasting the datagram with the broadcast identifier information via the satellite radio network to permit receipt of the datagram by receivers in the satellite radio network; and

c) a receiver for receiving a notification by at least one receiver in the segment of receivers for which the datagram is directed, wherein the notification indicates that the at least one receiver has received the datagram.

68. The system of claim 67, wherein the broadcast identifier includes an individual identifier.

69. The system of claim 67, wherein the broadcast identifier includes a group identifier.

70. The system of claim 67, wherein the broadcast identifier includes a category identifier.

71. The system of claim 67, wherein the broadcast identifier includes an area identifier.

72. The system of claim 67, wherein the broadcast identifier includes a data identifier.

73. The system of claim 67, wherein the broadcast identifier includes a vehicle identifier.

74. A computer program product for broadcasting data from a satellite radio network, comprising:

a) computer code for generating broadcast identifier information included in a datagram, wherein the broadcast identifier information identifies a segment of receivers in a satellite radio network to which the datagram is directed;

b) computer code for broadcasting the datagram with the broadcast identifier information via the satellite radio network to permit receipt of the datagram by receivers in the satellite radio network; and

c) computer code for receiving a notification by at least one receiver in the segment of receivers for which the datagram is directed, wherein the notification indicates that the at least one receiver has received the datagram.

75. The computer program product of claim 74, wherein the broadcast identifier includes an individual identifier.

76. The computer program product of claim 74, wherein the broadcast identifier includes a group identifier.

77. The computer program product of claim 74, wherein the broadcast identifier includes a category identifier.

78. The computer program product of claim 74, wherein the broadcast identifier includes an area identifier.

79. The computer program product of claim 74, wherein the broadcast identifier includes a data identifier.

80. The computer program product of claim 74, wherein the broadcast identifier includes a vehicle identifier.

81. A method for receiving data from a satellite radio network, comprising:

receiving a datagram broadcast via a satellite radio network utilizing a receiver in a vehicle;

wherein the datagram has a header portion that includes a first group identifier identifying a group of one or more receivers in the satellite radio network to which the datagram is directed, and an area identifier identifying a geographic area in which the datagram is directed;

obtaining information about a geographic location of the recipient receiver utilizing a global positioning system receiver coupled to the recipient receiver;

wherein the receiver has a locally stored individual identifier and a locally stored group identifier associated therewith;

comparing the group identifier and the area identifier of the datagram with the locally stored group identifier and obtained geographic location information of the recipient receiver to determine if the recipient receiver is an intended recipient of the datagram;

wherein the datagram has a body portion that includes a set of one or more individual identifiers of receivers in the satellite radio network and an instruction for replacing the locally stored group identifiers of the receivers identified by the set of one or more individual identifiers with a second group identifier;

determining whether the locally stored individual identifier of the recipient receiver matches at least one individual identifier in the set of one or more individual identifiers of the datagram by comparing the locally stored individual identifier of the recipient receiver to the set of one or more individual identifiers of the datagram; and

replacing the locally stored group identifier of the recipient receiver with the second group identifier of the datagram if a match is found.

82. A computer program product for receiving data from a satellite radio network, comprising:

computer code for receiving a datagram broadcast via a satellite radio network utilizing a receiver in a vehicle;

wherein the datagram has a header portion that includes a first group identifier identifying a group of one or more receivers in the satellite radio network to which the datagram is directed, and an area identifier identifying a geographic area in which the datagram is directed;

computer code for obtaining information about a geographic location of the recipient receiver utilizing a global positioning system receiver coupled to the recipient receiver;

wherein the receiver has a locally stored individual identifier and a locally stored group identifier associated therewith;

computer code for comparing the group identifier and the area identifier of the datagram with the locally stored group identifier and obtained geographic location information of the recipient receiver to determine if the recipient receiver is an intended recipient of the datagram;

wherein the datagram has a body portion that includes a set of one or more individual identifiers of receivers in the satellite radio network and an instruction for replacing the locally stored group identifiers of the receivers identified by the set of one or more individual identifiers with a second group identifier;

computer code for determining whether the locally stored individual identifier of the recipient receiver matches at least one individual identifier in the set of one or more individual identifiers of the datagram by comparing the locally stored individual identifier of the recipient receiver to the set of one or more individual identifiers of the datagram; and

computer code for replacing the locally stored group identifier of the recipient receiver with the second group identifier of the datagram if a match is found.

83. A system for receiving data from a satellite radio network, comprising:

a satellite radio network;

a datagram being broadcast via the satellite radio network, the datagram having a header portion that includes a first group identifier identifying a group of one or more receivers in the satellite radio network to which the datagram is directed, and an area identifier identifying a geographic area in which the datagram is directed, the datagram having a body portion that includes a set of one or more individual identifiers of receivers in the satellite radio network and an instruction for replacing locally stored group identifiers of the receivers identified by the set of one or more individual identifiers with a second group identifier;

a vehicle having a receiver for receiving for receiving the broadcast datagram and a global positioning system receiver coupled to the recipient receiver for obtaining information about a geographic location of the recipient receiver;

the recipient receiver having a locally stored individual identifier and a locally stored group identifier associated therewith, the locally stored individual identifier and the locally stored group identifier being stored in memory coupled to the recipient receiver;

the recipient receiver having logic for comparing the group identifier and the area identifier of the datagram with the locally stored group identifier and obtained geographic location information of the recipient receiver to determine if the recipient receiver is an intended recipient of the datagram;

the recipient receiver having logic for determining whether the locally stored individual identifier of the recipient receiver matches at least one individual identifier in the set of one or more individual identifiers of the datagram by comparing the locally stored individual identifier of the recipient receiver to the set of one or more individual identifiers of the datagram; and

the recipient receiver having logic for replacing the locally stored group identifier of the recipient receiver with the second group identifier of the datagram if a match is found.
