Abstract

The present invention provides a method, apparatus, and computer instructions for obtaining status information for processes executing in a grid. Responsive to a submission of a job from the data processing system to a remote node on the grid, a job identifier is received from the remote node. The job identifier is saved in a set of job identifiers. Responsive to a request for a status of jobs submitted from the data processing system, a job status request for each job identifier in the set of job identifiers for processes still executing is submitted using the set of job identifiers to form a set of job status requests. Responses to the set of job status requests are received. The responses are then presented.

Claims

1. A method in a data processing system for obtaining status information for processes executing in a grid, the method comprising:

responsive to a submission of a job from the data processing system to a remote node on the grid, receiving a job identifier from the remote node;

saving the job identifier in a set of job identifiers;

responsive to a request for a status of jobs submitted from the data processing system, submitting a job status request for each job identifier in the set of job identifiers for processes still executing, using the set of job identifiers to form a set of job status requests;

receiving responses to the set of job status requests; and

presenting the responses.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the job identifier is saved in a file.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

removing a particular job identifier in the set of job identifiers for a particular job if a response to a job status request indicates that the particular job is done.

4. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

saving job identifiers in the set of job identifiers for local jobs executing on the data processing system.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein each job identifier within the set of job identifiers is a unique identifier.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the request for a status of jobs is generated in response to at least one of a user input and a periodic event.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the remote node is a GRAM.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the responses are presented using at least one of a display screen and a speaker.

9. A data processing system for obtaining status information for processes executing in a grid, the data processing system comprising:

first receiving means, responsive to a submission of a job from the data processing system to a remote node on the grid, for receiving a job identifier from the remote node;

saving means for saving the job identifier in a set of job identifiers;

submitting means, responsive to a request for a status of jobs submitted from the data processing system, for submitting a job status request for each job identifier in the set of job identifiers for processes still executing, using the set of job identifiers to form a set of job status requests;

second receiving means for receiving responses to the set of job status requests; and

presenting means for presenting the responses.

10. The data processing system of claim 9, wherein the job identifier is saved in a flat file.

11. The data processing system of claim 9 further comprising:

removing means for removing a particular job identifier in the set of job identifiers for a particular job if a response to a job status request indicates that the particular job is done.

12. The data processing system of claim 9 further comprising:

saving means for saving job identifiers in the set of job identifiers for local jobs executing on the data processing system.

13. The data processing system of claim 9, wherein each job identifier within the set of job identifiers is a unique identifier.

14. The data processing system of claim 9, wherein the request for a status of jobs is generated in response to at least one of a user input and a periodic event.

15. The data processing system of claim 9, wherein the remote node is a GRAM.

16. The data processing system of claim 9, wherein the responses are presented using at least one of a display screen and a speaker.

17. A data processing system for obtaining status information for processes executing in a grid, the data processing system comprising:

a bus system;

a memory connected to the bus system, wherein the memory contains a set of instructions;

a processing unit connected to the bus system, wherein the processing unit executes the set of instructions to receive a job identifier from the remote node in response to a submission of a job from the data processing system to a remote node on the grid;

save the job identifier in a set of job identifiers;

submit a job status request for each job identifier in the set of job identifiers for processes still executing, using the set of job identifiers to form a set of job status requests, in response to a request for a status of jobs submitted from the data processing system;

receive responses to the set of job status requests; and

present the responses.

18. A computer program product in a computer readable medium for obtaining status information for processes executing in a grid, the computer program product comprising:

first instructions, responsive to a submission of a job from the data processing system to a remote node on the grid, for receiving a job identifier from the remote node;

second instructions for saving the job identifier in a set of job identifiers;

third instructions, responsive to a request for a status of jobs submitted from the data processing system, submitting a job status request for each job identifier in the set of job identifiers for processes still executing, for using the set of job identifiers to form a set of job status requests;

third instructions for receiving responses to the set of job status requests; and

fourth instructions for presenting the responses.

19. The computer program product of claim 18, wherein the job identifier is saved in a flat file.

20. The computer program product of claim 18 further comprising:

fifth instructions for removing a particular job identifier in the set of job identifiers for a particular job if a response to a job status request indicates that the particular job is done.
