Abstract

A system and method for transmitting user data between personal communication devices is disclosed. User data may be electronically transmitted between personal communication devices using hardwired interfaces, optical interfaces, and cellular communication networks. User data may also be stored in a cellular communications network for electronic transmission between the network and personal communication devices as desired.

Claims

1. A method for transmitting user data between cellular telephones comprising:

identifying data stored in memory of a first cellular telephone for electronic transmission to a second cellular telephone;

identifying the second cellular telephone that will receive the identified data;

encoding the identified data;

transmitting user data electronically from the first cellular telephone to the identified second cellular telephone;

decoding the identified data; and

storing the identified data in memory of the identified second cellular telephone.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the user data is transmitted over a hardwired data link.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the user data is transmitted over a short range wireless point-to-point interface.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein the interface is an infrared interface.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the user data is transmitted over a cellular communications network.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein the first and second cellular telephones are a single cellular telephone.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the identified second cellular telephone is identified by entering into the first cellular telephone a cellular telephone number corresponding to the second cellular telephone.

8. A method for transmitting user data between a cellular communications network and a cellular telephone comprising:

storing a backup copy of user data associated with a particular user in a cellular communications network;

identifying user data associated with the backup copy for electronic transmission to a cellular telephone;

identifying a cellular telephone for receipt of the identified data;

encoding the identified data;

transmitting the identified data from the cellular communications network to the identified cellular telephone;

decoding the identified data; and

storing the identified data in memory of the identified cellular telephone.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein the user data is stored in the cellular communications network by periodically transmitting user data from a cellular telephone to the cellular communications network.

10. The method of claim 8 wherein the identified cellular telephone is identified by the particular user by entering into a cellular telephone associated with the particular user a cellular telephone number corresponding to the identified cellular telephone.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein the identified cellular telephone is the cellular telephone associated with the particular user.

12. A cellular telephone wherein user data may be transmitted to and received from a second cellular telephone comprising:

an infrared port for selectively transmitting data to and receiving data from a second cellular telephone; and

a processor for selectively encoding data that will be transmitted to the second cellular telephone and decoding data received from the second cellular telephone; and

a memory for storing data decoded by the processor.

13. The cellular telephone of claim 12 wherein the cellular telephone is identified for receipt of user data by a cellular telephone number corresponding to the cellular telephone.

14. The cellular telephone of claim 12 wherein the cellular telephone identifies the second cellular telephone using a cellular telephone number corresponding to the second cellular telephone.

15. The cellular telephone of claim 12 wherein the infrared port is a data port wherein user data may be exchanged over a hardwired data link.

16. A system for electronically transmitting data between cellular telephones comprising:

a cellular communications network wherein user data associated with a plurality of users is stored; and

a plurality of cellular telephones corresponding to the plurality of users and their respective user data, wherein particular users may access their respective user data and transmit the data to at least one of the plurality of cellular telephones.

17. The system of claim 16 wherein the particular users transmit their respective user data to their own cellular telephones.

18. The system of claim 16 wherein the particular users transmit their respective user data to a cellular telephone of a third party.

19. The system of claim 16 wherein the plurality of cellular telephones is a plurality of UEs.

20. A method for transmitting user data between UEs comprising:

identifying data stored in memory of a first UE for electronic transmission to a second UE;

identifying the second UE that will receive the identified data;

encoding the identified data;

transmitting user data electronically from the first UE to the identified second UE;

decoding the identified data; and

storing the identified data in memory of the identified second UE.

21. The method of claim 20 wherein the user data is transmitted over a hardwired data link.

22. The method of claim 20 wherein the user data is transmitted over a short range wireless point-to-point interface.

23. The method of claim 20 wherein the interface is an infrared interface.

24. The method of claim 20 wherein the user data is transmitted over a cellular communications network.

25. The method of claim 24 wherein the first and second UEs are a single UE.

26. The method of claim 20 wherein the identified second UE is identified by entering into the first UE an identifier corresponding to the second UE.

27. A method for transmitting user data between a cellular communications network and a UE comprising:

storing a backup copy of user data associated with a particular user in a cellular communications network;

identifying user data associated with the backup copy for electronic transmission to a UE;

identifying a UE for receipt of the identified data;

encoding the identified data;

transmitting the identified data from the cellular communications network to the identified UE;

decoding the identified data; and

storing the identified data in memory of the identified UE.

28. The method of claim 27 wherein the user data is stored in the cellular communications network by periodically transmitting user data from a UE to the cellular communications network.

29. The method of claim 27 wherein the identified UE is identified by the particular user by entering into a UE associated with the particular user an identifier corresponding to the identified UE.

30. The method of claim 29 wherein the identified UE is the UE associated with the particular user.

31. A UE wherein user data may be transmitted to and received from a second UE comprising:

an infrared port for selectively transmitting data to and receiving data from a second UE; and

a processor for selectively encoding data that will be transmitted to the second UE and decoding data received from the second UE; and

a memory for storing data decoded by the processor.

32. The UE of claim 31 wherein the UE is identified for receipt of user data by an identifier corresponding to the UE.

33. The UE of claim 31 wherein the UE identifies the second UE using an identifier corresponding to the second UE.

34. The UE of claim 31 wherein the infrared port is a data port wherein user data may be exchanged over a hardwired data link.

36. The method of claim 34 wherein the computer network is a computer.

37. The method of claim 34 wherein the computer network is a cellular communications network other than a cellular communications network belonging to a carrier through which the UE was activated.

35. A method for transmitting user data between a computer network and a UE comprising:

storing a backup copy of user data associated with a particular user in a computer network;

identifying user data associated with the backup copy for electronic transmission to a UE;

identifying a UE for receipt of the identified data;

encoding the identified data;

transmitting the identified data from the computer network to the identified UE;

decoding the identified data; and

storing the identified data in memory of the identified UE.
