1. A method of creating an anastomosis between two body lumens having tissue walls, said method comprising:
- (a) positioning said walls of two body lumens adjacent each other;
(b) creating a small opening in each lumen;
(c) compressing at least a portion of each wall of each body lumen into a plane of tissue;
(d) dissecting the two body lumens by cutting parallel to the plane created by the compressed portion of the two body walls to create a passageway through each wall without extending the passageway into the small openings; and
(e) adhering the touching walls to each other about said passageway.

Abstract
A device having a cutting implement movable in a direction generally parallel to a tissue surface and creating a cut line that does not extend to the proximal end of tissue adjacent the device is disclosed. The device has a cutting implement that emerges from a tissue engaging surface and cuts tissue only between a proximal and distal ends of the adjoining staple lines. A method is further provided for anastomosing two lumens without extending the passageway between them to the openings made for the forks of the anastomosis device.

9. A method of creating an anastomosis between two body lumens having tissue walls, said method comprising:
-
(a) positioning the walls of the body lumens next to each other;
(b) compressing a portion of each wall of each lumen into a plane of body tissue;
(c) applying at least two rows of staples to adhere the two body lumens to each other; and
(d) cutting parallel to the plane of tissue and only between the proximal end and distal end of the rows of staples to create a passageway while leaving uncut a portion of compressed tissue distal to the proximal end of the rows of staples. - View Dependent Claims (10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16)
